Speaking of dinosaurs, we better tell you now: The next release will be iOS 5 only. That means the only device left out will be the original iPhone 3G. Everything from the 3GS onwards can be updated (and runs better with) iOS 5.

At last count, I noticed about 50 people having used it on a iPhone 3G in the past month, we can't tell how many of those were just trial or customers, though. In any case, 2.6 will keep working for those people, but they can't update to the next.

And one of the greatest advantages on iOS 5 is incremental OS updates. You'll be rid of having to completely wipe the phone (and lose all maps) when upgrading the OS.

So those not on iOS 5 yet: get over your fear of using iTunes, plug it into your computer and let it update! :)

Stikybeke 20th Jan 2012 22:26

Well for what it's worth....I only have the iphone 4s (thanks XXX for steering me in the iphone direction many many moons ago..). Not long after I got it in Dec 11 (after using the iphone 3) as part of my plan upgrade I downloaded Oz Runways.

I love it. It's a great app and I can't fault it at all. I use it alot and I would like to say that all upgrades will be greatfully received. I've been following this thread since it started and as a result will probably also end up taking the plunge and getting an ipad.

Geez, If I can't find my way around the sky now between Oz Runways, MyE6B, Navclock, Flightplan, Airnav and Commander Compass apps together with NAIPS, VTC, VNC, WAC, ERC (low of course!!!) charts, a Garmin 430 and 2 x mark 1 eyeballs then I better give the game away.......

:ok:

VH-XXX 21st Jan 2012 01:15

I have another feature request if it's not already been thought of.....

A scale display for the map. We zoom in and out frequently but lose track of the scale, particularly between the WAC and VTC etc.

This would negate the need for the proximity rings I was speaking with Bas about recently.

Something either down the side or across the top of the screen maybe below the info bar.

baswell 21st Jan 2012 07:25

Tipsy, I get the feeling your trial was a while back, were you using 2.5, or even 2.0?

We released 2.6 a few weeks ago, which improves a lot on stability and performance, especially on the iPad 1.

If you email support with your user ID, we'll be happy to give you another couple of weeks to try it and see how you like it now.

(If the previous version you had was 2.0, you will automatically get an extra month of trial if you update to 2.6)

To be honest, I am surprised you perceive the maps as being slow, especially compared to Gamin or AvPlan!

And you should see what we have in store for the next major release!

(A lot more than just what shagpile has mentioned so far. Some of it we're keeping a secret so the competition will have to wait with copying it until after we release it...)

tipsy.skipsy 21st Jan 2012 07:28

is there a feature - of a 10nm ring around the aircraft ? in this software , if there is can someone tell me how to activate it ?

baswell 21st Jan 2012 09:02

Yes, select the "Map View Options" menu (double cogs on the tool bar) and enable "10 mile marker".

It even highlights ALAs within the 10 mile ring!

Bas.

MACH082 21st Jan 2012 09:22

If you could overlay the bom radar on maps, well, that would be the icing on the cake :)

MACH082 21st Jan 2012 10:16

They are not overlaid, only add ons. I'm talking having the radar paints on the WAAC chart or the ERCs which is my main use.

That way for STARs, SIDS etc you could see if it was going to keep you out of the poo :D

OverFienD 24th Jan 2012 23:08

Hi all,

Firstly, I'm a big fan of OzRunways, and have been subscribed for some time now. My coments aren't designed to knock the devs, only to share the information.

The latest update seems to have made the app a lot more unstable (possibly due to factors outlined above by baswell) and unresponsive.

In fact, the crashes in use with DAPs and charts have meant I now default to the paper copy in the air and sometimes on the ground.

Scrolling AIPs will almost inevitably crash the app, unless you move at snails pace (which obviously most of us don't do).

For info, I'm running iPad 1 iOS 5.0.1.

Otherwise, I commend the devs for a ripper app that has improved a bunch, and no doubt will continue to!

Jabawocky 24th Jan 2012 23:17

I have had these crashes but the last update about a week ago seemed to have stopped them

tipsy.skipsy 24th Jan 2012 23:31

is there a way for OzRunway Developers to collect crash , error data from individual iPads ? if it helps them in improving their stability I am sure users would be happy to send them.

Shagpile 25th Jan 2012 07:41

On Crashes, the cause of 99% of them is memory (running out of it). We do get crash reports and have practically zero traditional bugs any more [i.e. from programming errors].

I left my iPad1(iOS 5.0.1) running OzRunways overnight last night & it was still running this morning. There are no memory leaks from normal use. It will not crash whilst running normally, only through heavy interaction on iPad1, which only has about 30mb available for apps.

If you cycle through scratchpad (10mb), AIP (12mb), have an ERSA page up & do a bunch of map scrolling with lots of waypoints displayed, don't be surprised if it runs out of memory - there is no way around this, the hardware is deficient for the amount of data displayed.

What happens is when you switch back to maps and pan around, it does a database lookup & requests 2mb memory for the waypoints search. The operating system says "oh crap, I don't have that much" and sends a message. We kill off AIP, but it's too late; maps has requested too much, too quickly, before the operating system can kill off background apps. iOS doesn't use virtual memory, so it doesn't bog-down like Windows. It just kills the app!

Optimizing this has been my pet project & each update I put a bunch of fixes to help keep memory use low. The next release will incorporate many more ensuring even better iPad1 stability, such as caching database lookups.

Greetings OzRunways guru's, tell me this, if I have subscribed to OzRunways on my IP2 do I have to pay again for a backup on my Iphone, or do it all work on both machines ....
cheers

Easy, just read the FAQ's....

FAQ | OzRunways

You can use your subscription on 1 iPhone & 1 iPad device. Just go into OzRunways Settings on the expired device & change your userID to be the same as the one that is working.

Avgas172 25th Jan 2012 09:42

READ the instruction manual.... good god man, it's almost un Australian, and with the big A day on on tommorrow and all .... and I did buy the lamb roast as well...

When is the next update ?

Shagpile 1st Feb 2012 08:14

When is the next update ?
Hopefully around end of Feb / Early March (depending if we can get all our new features stable enough).

We've already done some of the requests from this forum (Nearby maps + Map Scale in bottom left). I've also done massive speed & stability improvements for iPad1 users.

Thank you for .. remembering us Tech Dino's who are still using IPad 1's.

Just one more thing ,

I really appreciate the effort of all OzRunways's Developers put towards the software and above all listening to our feedback here on PPRuNe. Thank you very much for your time , efforts and making lives of pilots easier. I wish you guys a lot of success. :)

blueloo 1st Feb 2012 09:07

I havent fiddled with Ozrunways for a while (only had it on an iPhone and I didn't own a bluetooth GPS at the time - subscription had expired prior to getting the GPS)

Just curious if you have the ability to do 2 things: (Both things we can do on Honeywell / Smith FMCs in some form or another - possibly copyright by the manufacturers)

1) a FIX page. It provides bearing/range to fix (either a waypoint/navaid or airport, /lat long) - we can put a (up to 3) green range rings on this - at what ever distance (puts a green circle around the fix. Great for situational awareness).

2) Ad hoc waypoints used for calculations - like PNRs etc (either a waypoint/ distance to a waypoint or lat long) Which are not part of the flight plan, but will appear on route (bit like a fix)

Any chance these exist or can be added?

Beta Testing

Does OzRunways allow people to Beta Test newer versions ?

If they do , how can I participate ?

185skywagon 5th Feb 2012 11:32

They do use some of us as beta testers from time to time.

Keg 5th Feb 2012 12:30

A recent bug I've had was continued crashing when trying to read the AIP on an iPad 1. I had no other apps running at the time. It normally happened when I tried scrolling the AIP between pages but occasionally just crashed when only reading.

Jack Ranga 5th Feb 2012 21:38

Keg, buy an ipad 2 :ok: (:})

Bunyan Wingnut 5th Feb 2012 21:48

Same experience as Keg, multiple crashes while just reading AIP on iPad 1. As for an iPad upgrade, I might just wait for the iPad 3 or iPad 2 Turbo :ok:

I also appreciate Shaggy's and developers' responsiveness to our feedback here. Tres beaut! :D

VH-XXX 5th Feb 2012 22:12

I may have heard from a little birdie who would actually know, that the iPad 3 is due in Feb. :8 That isn't just speculation either. Admittedly geek websites have been suggesting this for a while.

My personal tip is released in late Feb, available here in March.

Oh goody. Only the other day the Birthday Fairy said to me I should get an iPad 3 when it's released because she believes I need one for work.

Who am I to dissuade the Birthday Fairy of her beliefs? :ok::}:D

Keg 6th Feb 2012 01:26

Thanks Jack. Like Clarrie, XXX and wing nut, I'm waiting for the next version. After that I need to wait for the new FBT year so after 1 Apr. :D]

I too appreciate the ability to provide feedback via PPRUNE.

Yep...........some of my advice is sage..............

A lot of it is pure crap :ugh:

We really , really .. need some stability upgrades keeping the IPad 1 in mind.
From what the developers say here on PPRuNe ... Its coming soon ... But as I have been saying for a while .. the sooner the better ...

I am assuming if the app is made more stable in general .. it would work well no matter what hardware is used !

Steps / Ideas / Suggestions to Improve the app.

1)Would it help , if more pilots / people helped in Beta Testing.

Im sure testing it in real life would be really important , but a lot of valuable data can be gathered via simulation as well during testing.

2) Rapid release development cycle i.e. what Firefox are doing.

Cannot be that quick, but a little bit more frequent is what I mean. Small but more frequent updates.

3) Reduction in subscription pricing to attract more customers / subscriptions.
( maybe a special offer for a couple of days / weeks )

Can anyone recommend a portable battery charger for the IPad ?

Jetjr 7th Feb 2012 21:46

When will Android version reappear on the radar?

Bunyan Wingnut 8th Feb 2012 11:20

Can anyone recommend a portable battery charger for the IPad ?
Yes. Belkin does a good charger kit, both 240v and 12v in the Belkin Charger Kit 2.1 AMP, widely available.

Agent86 8th Feb 2012 12:57

Tipsy,

How portable do you mean? 240V, 12V or it's own battery.

I have a 6600maH battery with 2 USB charging ports one 1A and one 2.1A (this is the important spec for iPad charging). I got it from DealExtreme (import from HK) This sort of thing is now avail at Dick Smith ..I think Belkin brand ..but dearer.

Mine gives a full recharge of the iPad and has the added benefit of recharging phone/Dual Bluetooth GPS if they get low.

tipsy.skipsy 8th Feb 2012 14:20

By portable I mean something with its own battery and yes it would be good if it has 2 usb outs.

So from what I understand the Ipad needs a 2.1A charger right ?

So , please advise if you know of good portable (with battery) chargers for Ipad !!

Thanks

baswell 8th Feb 2012 22:08

A Google for "ipad portable battery pack" (as opposed to charger) found me this:

phone Charger | iPhone Charger | iPad Charger | Portable Battery Charger | ZAGGsparq | ZAGG

There will be others like it too.

We've got a reasonable amount of beta testers now and we can't take on any more for a few months anyway. Apple limitations. Hrmpf...

We're not much like FireFox because they have completed all their major features, all the updates are indeed bug fixes and improvements. We're still working on major new features and having parallel development paths is a huge overhead slowing everything down.

Hang in there, 2.7 is going to be a great update with a lot of great new features and huge performance and stability improvements. We're already the most stable app on the Australian market by far and this will make it so much better still. I have not seen it do an un-commanded exit in ages.

sprocket check 20th Feb 2012 10:31

A possible solution for iPhone/iPad WiFi users:

Yes, you bas and co would have to do a little coding (not much I would hope);

there is an app called gps2ip, I think it's free.

It runs in background and sends iPhone NMEA+ data over TCP/IP.

All OzRunways would need to do is listen on a port. The devices would need to be tethered via usb or wifi, though gps2ip will also push via 3G.

whadyareckon?

Chimbu chuckles 20th Feb 2012 10:47

Guys love the 2.7 update - just one request - could you change the thick green line for a thin sharp magenta line in 2.8?

Would make the product look much more professional...oh....don't suppose you could add a little Bonanza aircraft thingy too?:ok:

Shagpile 20th Feb 2012 12:20

I have just set up my aircraft and changed its fuel measurements to pounds. However when I jazz up a plan the fuel shows up as in litres in the plan.
Fixed in v2.7 (out soon)

don't suppose you could add a little Bonanza aircraft thingy too?
No problemo - just PM me all the aircraft details that you'd fill into OzRunways plus any additional info you may have including glide ratio, fixed reserve, climb speed, cruise speed, etc etc.
