You blokes ' Dunnunda' are having fun with photos.
I see Funafuti there recently.
Prompted me to add these from my days living / working down there.
Maybe exaviator was the Driver of the 748 ?
See Funafuti sealed and unsealed.
Regards from a winter Dublin.

For some reason which has always eluded me, I have always liked the look of the 748.....best not to question it. They just look good.

Funafuti

Descol...when was it sealed? Seem to recall going through there in the mid '70s it was still unsealed.

[like most of the airfields in use today around the Pacific it was built by the US and 7th AAF B-24 were based there. Japanese even raided it once and destroyed several B-24s]

g'day

I think the Funafuti strip was sealed around 1993 - possibly using European funds. I remember thinking it was an opportunity lost that they did not construct drainage culverts and catchments in order to provide much needed water supply on the atoll. Also lost was the 'grass' playing fiels for soccer and vollyball.
See the Funafuti ladies plaing ball below.

They still play football around the airport - in fact everything is taken down and shifted as we're about to arrive, and probably put back up as soon as the wheels have left the runway! I also have seen Tennis rackets and netball hoops lying around the edge of the runway - so I guess the seal is used for other sports now.

Proof (because I carried a camera) that I have been Blessed (sometimes !!?) - ONCE-) during my flying career. Exclusive shots (because the only other ones allowed were Papparrazzi travelling with him) that the hometown paper used for a centrespread. (They gave me a new roll of film)

more shots (!!??)

I think that's the one that made a number of very long flights around central Australia and eventually ran out of fuel about 200 metres short of the Alice Springs runway. It got bent a bit. (the airport fence I think) and the american owner decided to leave it here, but not before he got the cutters into the wiring and removed lots of instruments and radios. It would be interesting to know where it is now. Good to see it got fixed.

Cosmo got it

In the Chartair hangar (previously Connair). It would be a good project to finish off. I wonder if the owner is open to offers and if so, what would be acceptable?

Frigatebird - your shot of the popemobile reminds me of the time in the early 80's when whoever was pope then visited Canberra. I was pulled up by the plod at an intersection with the road to Canberra airport as the papal entourage was on its way to the airport. They drove past fairly fast but when the popemobile (the fully enclosed version) went by he was leaning back taking a drag on a smoke. As a tyke I used it as an argument to keep smoking myself.

Flying over New Year's Eve and into 2010...

Driving down Vulcan st., toward my favourite part of town...

[broken link]

....a fortuitous amount of security put in since last I was here *sigh* Won't be getting in here!

[broken link]

Pass round the side, catch a glimpse of what they've been up to round here...

[broken link]

Made it.

[broken link]

Time to meet the bird...

[broken link]

...and then, a fancy-schmancy warbird.

[broken link]

Time to get out there!

[broken link]

Flying up the coast for a looksee...

[broken link]

...The 'Bay is a picture.

[broken link]

And beyond...
