I think the Funafuti strip was sealed around 1993 - possibly using European funds. I remember thinking it was an opportunity lost that they did not construct drainage culverts and catchments in order to provide much needed water supply on the atoll. Also lost was the 'grass' playing fiels for soccer and vollyball.
