March 17 Hanoi.

Five sleeps and Five brekkies before the big smokbalus south eh Hanoi!

In case I do not make it on the web Tuesday, heres a wee Oirish thought to bide you on your way.

Looie the Leprechaun.

An Irishman's Philosophy
In life, there are only two things to worry about—
Either you are well or you are sick.
If you are well, there is nothing to worry about,
But if you are sick, there are only two things to worry about—
Either you will get well or you will die.
If you get well, there is nothing to worry about,

But if you die, there are only two things to worry about—
Either you will go to heaven or hell.
If you go to heaven, there is nothing to worry about.

And if you go to hell, you’ll be so busy shaking hands with all your friends
You won’t have time to worry!

Enjoy life!

Looie.

** Airport Vandalism **

An international flight had to be diverted to Cairns instead of being able to land at Jackson's International Airport recently due to poor lighting caused by vandalism to lights. Air Niugini confirmed that Flight PX 9, inbound from Manila and due to land at 4:50 in the morning, was diverted to Cairns, Australia, due to poor lighting on the runway. The plane, an airbus leased from White Airways of Portugal, returned to Port Moresby about six hours later during daylight hours. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) confirmed that eight of runway lights had been damaged by vandals.

CAA chief executive officer Joseph Kintau said two people have been arrested in connection with the incident, and are in custody awaiting police charges.

Things don't change!

PNG pilots seek better pay
PAPUA New Guinea is fast losing its best pilots and aircraft engineers to better paying airline operators overseas because there is no incentive onshore, according to a local aviation service operator.
National Aviation Services managing director Ted Diro told The National in an interview that the Government needs to step in quickly before the situation worsens.
He said there was an acute shortage of pilots in the country as pilot and engineer training has stagnated while the demand for air services was increasing.
“Our engineers and pilots are going overseas and getting better paid jobs because there is no reason to stay on here,” the former army commander and politician-turned-businessman said.
He said the situation affected locally-owned small airlines that were mainly into servicing the rural bulk of the population.
Explaining a number of delays and cancellation of flights recently, Air Niugini admitted to losing pilots abroad because of attractive wages elsewhere.
But the airline management said the problem was not unique to Air Niugini, as there was a worldwide shortage of pilots in the vicinity of 2000.
It said Air Niugini has faced increased competition from other airlines in the region on recruitment and retention of pilots, and has put in place new salary levels late last year to encourage existing pilots to stay, and also attract new pilots.
It said for the last several years, the airline has been recruiting pilots for all its fleet types to accommodate the pilot requirements due to the increase in aircraft fleet and also to fill vacancies.
Sources told this newspaper the decision by the Air Niugini management to wet lease aircrafts had displaced pilots, causing them to leave. Under the wet lease arrangement, a plane comes with its own crew. But an airline spokesperson denied this, saying crews were still paid even though they were not flying.
Another official spoken to yesterday said retention of pilots was a never-ending cycle.
“It’s quite true, we have a shortage. As pilots leave, others get promoted, so we have gaps we have to fill in. But the problem is not unique to us,” he said.
He said Air Niugini was out on an aggressive recruitment drive, but the poor image of the country was not helping in recruitment.
“When we advertise, people are reluctant to come. Those that accept offers want to live elsewhere and work, but we can’t accept that,” he said.
Many pilots who were with Air Niugini but attracted overseas are doing very well.
Capt Ted Pakii, who resigned from Air Niugini, was recently appointed chief pilot of Skystar Airways. Capt Pakii hails from Wabag in the Enga province.
With Capt Pakii is Captain Peter Ansphil. He resigned from Air Niugini to join Orient Thai. He is now employed as a captain on the B767 with Skystar Airways.
With Etihad Airways in Abu Dahbi is Capt Granger Nanara. He flew with Emirates Airlines for 15 years before moving to Abu Dahbi to take up his current position as the VP operations for Etihad Airways two years ago.
Capt Narara is from Dobu, Milne Bay province.
With Capt Narara is first officer Terry Togumagoma of Trobiand islands in Milne Bay province.
Capt Timothy Narara, younger of the Narara brothers, resigned from Air Niugini to join his elder brother at Emirates. He is currently a training captain with Emirates.
Capt Locklyn Sabumei, who resigned from Air Niugini, is also there.
Capt James Makop resigned from Air Niugini 10 years ago to fly for Emirates. After eight years there, he left for bigger challenges and is now a captain at Jade Cargo Airways based in China.
Capt Makop is from Mt Hagen.
Capt Samuel Siaguru, who resigned from Air Niugini in 2005, is also at Jade Cargo as a captain.
First officer Mark Neah, who left Air Niugini, has been flying for Cathay Pacific for the last seven years. Neah is from Wabag in the Enga province.

Angel PNGAir Upgrade

Hi Guys,

My web server crashed and I decided to upgrade the web site at the same time. In the process lost a lot of images relating to Papua New Guinea Aviation.

The upgrade also means you will have to create a new account to post on the forum or upload images. Sorry for the inconvenience.

If anyone has images relating to Papua New Guinea aviation or a story to tell, please come and have a look at the new site and perhaps join the forum and post some photos under the photo gallery.

The must be thousands of photographs out there that people would just love to see.

Thank you in advance.

Tinnie is correct.............as always. RDB never flew, except as a passenger.

A few other errors too. It was Ranald, not Ronald that was RDB's first name; the first flying instructor in PNG was waaaay before 1972 (although Barry may have been the first NATIONAL flying instructor), and the spelling police would have a field day with this home page.

Despite that, it is great to see someone putting such a big effort into preserving such an important part of history.

Ranald Dennis Buchanan. A memory.

Of course Dennis flew..but not as a pilot.
RDB as himself
The Skipper as Peter J (Grouper) Arnold.
The flight was to show the new GM the ropes in Madang.
Alkie as Malcolm Douglas then CP-Madang.

Written by Capt D.J.Miles 1968/9?

RETURN OF THE ACE
P. J. Arnold
He cast his eye in an awesome sweep
For he had got this Executive fairly cheap
This is Goroka, the principle base
Among the top men you will take your place

Tomorrow we’ll spring them down on the coast
Kick Alkie’s arse, he’s starting to boast
We’ll be smart and hit ‘em at first light,
I’ll arrange right away for my executive flight.

First light, according to plan
Staff stood to attention, spic and span
The pilot, shiny faced, cap on chest
Clean teeth, smiling, looking his best

Out onto the apron the executives walked
When he lifted his eyes the New Man balked
The reason because he likes being alive
For their pilot stood by a grimy One Eighty five

Was this what he’d been led to expect
He’d envisaged a modern executive jet
“It’s quite safe” the smiling captain implored,
reassured by this, he stepped onboard

He fought his way through that little door
Suffered a hernia and fell to the floor
At last he was in and arranged his feet
When Traffic staff found no belts for the seat

Belts where fetched, departing at last
When the Port Super came through quite fast
‘Out the back there is Madang freight
could we throw it on, you’re ok for weight’

‘Bloody oath’ cried RDB, ‘that’s ok
I would like to make this bloody flight pay’
‘’ere, nurse this bow for half an hour
shift your arse for this bag of flour’

‘Stick this suitcase between your legs,
go easy on this box of eggs’
Can’t see daylight for bloody freight
So they departed Goroka, three hours late

Now down at Madang there’s ten knots ‘cross the strip
Up to now it’s been a wonderful trip
But the Ace flies a fast modern light twin
On a One Eighty Five his hand’s not right in

So in they come with drift laid right off
The Ace gives a twitch and then gives a cough
Rounds – out, pins it, but not good enough
Bounces clean off the strip and into the rough

The smiling pilot has suddenly changed
She’s pumping that pole like a man deranged
Her legs are going likes she’s running a race
Teeth a chattering and sweat on his face

‘****’ cries Junior ‘Wot’s going on ‘ere’
he sees the Aces face, covered in fear
The old ship’s pig-jumping down the strip
‘I can see it’s going to be a prick of a trip’

The man in the back thinks that the air is rough
All he can see is cargo and stuff
‘Hell’ cries the Ace, ‘I can’t take anymore’
gives it away and opens the door

Going down with the ship and all of that crap
Doesn’t appeal to this crafty chap
But before he could throw himself clear
Away to the left it started to career

Arse over kite, end over end
Went two tons of cargo, aluminum and men
From among the rubble a head popped out
Spat out the throttle and began to shout

‘Who has a match’ this man cried
there was silence, no answer, had they all died?
He searched through the wreckage like a man gone mad
Uncovered the new man, no matches he had

‘ ‘ere, give us a hand we’ve got to find old Grope
if he’s got matches, it’s our only hope’
but fire-bois and cops searched the wreckage that day
hope of finding Grope was dwindling away

But if they’d looked over amongst the trees
They would have seen a man, trousers below the knees
Squatting, with face contorted in pain
In classic style, the Ace returns again.

Great web site - but a few corrections.

Junior bought TAL from the widows of Jim Smith and Jack Gray in 1956 and took over on January 1, 1957. 1958 was the year the last DH84A Dragon, VH-AON was sold, flown south by Squadron Leader Dick Cresswell.

Dennis arrived in PNG in 1949 and was 25 years old when he bought TAL. He referred to his MBE as "My Bloody Effort". Not all of us agreed with that!

Read today that John Wild (APNG)will be retiring at the end of the year at the age of 80 not a bad effort. Also that APNG will be getting a 737 this year.

Cool Uncle John Retires

Maybe that is why APNG are going public!

Airlines PNG goes public

AIRLINES PNG (APNG) Limited is going public with the issue of 105 million shares to potential investors.
It was reported in National Superannuation Fund Ltd newsletter that the airline which operates local and international routes would list on the Port Moresby Stock Exchange on June 23.
The airline intends to use funds raised from the listing to purchase four aircraft, a Twin Otter, two Dash 8s and a Boeing 737, while some of it will be used to reduce debts and used as working capital.
“The owners of APNG are offering 50 per cent of the company, that 105 million shares, to potential investors and the public in Papua New Guinea,” the newsletter stated. The offer opened on April 30 and will close on June 6.
The application price for investing into APNG shares is K1.00 and each potential investor may apply for a minimum parcel of 2000 shares or a higher number of shares in multiples of 100.
According to the newsletter, thus, a minimum investment of K2000 was an equitable value for investing into an airline company that was competitive within PNG’s airline industry through expansion of its capacity, passenger numbers and routes serviced.
Most notably, National Super-annuation Fund, PNG’s growing superfund, is looking to acquire 10 per cent of the shares that are being offered to the public.
APNG was started in 1987 in Milne Bay Province. It went on to acquire a long term contract with Chevron Niugini in 1989 to provide aviation support to the Kutubu oilfields.
In 1997, the company purchased two Dash 8 aircraft which took the airline into the high capacity passenger market and laid the groundwork for the highly competitive and technically competent airline it is today.
Before 2005, it operated as a domestic carrier but soon after started international services to Cairns in 2005 and Brisbane in 2006.
By the end of this year, APNG will have 18 planes in their fleet, that is eight Twin Otters, nine Dash 8s and one Boeing 737.
And as of March this year, APNG has more than 70 pilots, men and women, to undertake the company’s flight operations and 131 engineering staff to look after the company’s fleet.
Pacific Nominees Limited has been appointed as advisers to the share issue, while Kina Securities Ltd has been appointed as the broker to the issue, PNG Registries Ltd as registrar, Deloitte Touch Tohmatsu as auditors, O’Brien’s as lawyers and Bank of South Pacific Ltd as the airline’s designated bank.

I know there was an active instructor in Moresby at least in December 1963, because my logbook shows a tailwheel endorsement done on Cessna 180A, VH-KER, done by one M.Butler at SPAC. Bloody hair-raising for him too - I only had 67 hrs TT on a PPL.

By the way, does anyone have an aerial pic of Naoro, or Efogi that they could email me ? [email protected] will find me.

cheers,

Nah, that can't be Geeves, surely! I'm almost positive that would be before his time. But the "Bloody hair-raising for him" sounds like Geeves?

I don't recall the year but it would have to be around '63 or '64, when Vince Sanders and RT were founding members of the Derro. There definitely was an Instructor and Vince's Tiger Moth as well as other aircraft.

From Today's Post Courier.

Same old same old....

Robbers clean out rural bank

A PORT Moresby-based criminal gang allegedly cleaned out a rural bank after kidnapping a bank executive’s children.
Local residents living close to the bank claimed more than K1 million was taken in the heist.
Bank South Pacific managing director Garth McIlwain denied an earlier claim the stolen amount was K1.5 million but agreed the robbers had got away with all the money held at his bank’s branch in Kerema, Gulf Province.
Gulf provincial police commander Inspector Vagi Heni confirmed there was a bank robbery between eight to nine o’clock last Saturday morning but could not give details of the figure taken.
Insp Vagi said two officials from the Criminal Investigation Division in Port Moresby will be flown to Kerema today to help with the investigations.
He said there were no reports from the bank about how much money was taken but unofficial figures released to the Post-Courier yesterday morning was more than K1 million – four trunks of money each containing more than K250,000 that were taken by the criminals.
He could not confirm all the criminals were Port Moresby-based but confirmed there were two gangs involved – one in Kerema and one in Port Moresby. Here is the preliminary report detailed to this paper by the Kerema bank officials (named) and the Kerema police. This is the same report with the BSP management in Port Moresby.
The police officers in Kerema said yesterday the preliminary report to them detailed that criminals kidnapped five family members of the BSP Kerema branch manager (named) in Port Moresby last Thursday afternoon.
The manager’s daughter and two sons were held as well as the daughter’s husband and son.
On Friday night in Kerema, criminals held the branch manager and his wife at the manager’s house in Kerema at gun point.
On Saturday morning, the criminals assembled other Kerema BSP branch staff members and opened the branch safe.
All the branch’s cash was taken. The criminals then were transported to the beach a short distance from Kerema town and fled by dinghy powered by an outboard motor. The family members kidnapped and held hostage in Port Moresby were released on Saturday afternoon.
The report said the amount of cash taken was not yet known, however the bank officials at Kerema who contacted the Post-Courier yesterday said it was about K1.5 million.
BSP boss Mr McIlwain denied the amount was in excess of K1.5 million but confirmed a preliminary report detailed was what they had received, confirming all cash in the branch was taken.
Mr McIlwain said he met Police Commissioner Gari Baki to discuss the matter.
“Yes the cash at Kerema branch has been taken by criminals on Saturday and the branch is now closed,” Mr McIlwain said.
“The operational risk challenges and the safety of BSP staff that are posted to the relatively remote locations is now certainly a heightened challenge for BSP. This unfortunate incident further reinforces the need to reduce cash in circulation in PNG. Customers will have no option but to utilise electronic banking facilities – in particular the EFTPOS devices – as we go forward.
“BSP will now significantly reduce the levels of cash held at branches. Customers wishing to avail themselves of large sums of cash will need to make prior arrangements in future.
“Luckily the BSP staff at Kerema and the family members that were kidnapped and held hostage for two days suffered no physical harm.. The branch manager at Kerema and staff will be offered alternative positions elsewhere in the bank and will receive professional counselling.
“Members of Parliament must consider invoking legislations that provide for severe penalties for the heinous crime of kidnapping. The judiciary must be supported by making such penalties mandatory.’’
