I'm not sure a tactical nuke or two would have much impact on this; their effects would be very much localised (obviously depending on their yields, ground or air-burst etc). Also, I assume a good portion of this was previously contaminated by Chernobyl, with little long term consequence (one hopes..).

Around 7% of Russia is arable, the rest is great for gulags. Russia conventional forces are still considerable in numbers, but their leadership is the best weapon Ukraine has. I doubt that Ukraine is going to sit back during the cold season, they have fire in the bellies and have enough supporters with arctic competency to take the fight to the Russians. The Russians are still getting junk from home, taking what they can from the people they have come to "liberate". Ukraine really does have a nuclear option available, they know where ZNPP is, and where the fallout goes, so some Russian force doing something reckless in Ukraine would likely end poorly for Russia. Russia's own nuclear power plants are well entered upwind of their major population centres. Would think that any release of a special weapon in Ukraine would have surprising outcomes in Russia, and deservedly so. The Ukrainians have shown remarkable restraint so far, Putin sees that as weakness, that could be an error.

As far as being up for grabs, Russia was an importer of tech, steel, and food from Ukraine, and they go and attack them. D'oh. The Russians always have dirt to eat.

Kazakhstan is a major agriculture country, behind Russia but still impressive. Of course, Kazakhs seem to have had their fill of Putin. Belarus is also a major food producer, and their current sychophantic dear leader, the last dictator of Europe by his own description, has managed to get a popularity of 15% or lower. His slavish obsequiousness to Vlad is impressive, will be looking shaky when Vlad has an accident cleaning windows or when his car suffers from smoking.

FDR I posted a link a while back showing what crops are grown where in Russia and hence a nuke on Ukraine would irradiate their own food production, not a good idea.

Remember this, the ONLY area that posted to leave Ukraine was Sevastopol which as it is Russian Military, it would, and 54% of Crimea voted to remain in Ukraine, that's Brexit numbers. So there is no need for fake Referendum's

Lol, none of this is about arable land.

There are many theories about why Putin started this and what he hopes to gain from it, but nobody has claimed it's about arable land. They're just pointing out some of the consequences of his actions.

Arable land is a plus +
Oil and gas reserves a plus each ++
Industrial heartland in Donbas +
Recreation of mythical Novorussiya +
Control of Black Sea +
Added land barrier before Moscow +
The more the merrier.

Just a shame about a few million sub-humans who will have to be moved out of the way.

If it’s an air burst and the fireball doesn’t touch the ground the fallout is minuscule and troops in armour can drive through the area in a couple of hours and infantry the next day. Take Hiroshima as an example.

I think, that the western countries shall immediately expell all children of Russian oligarchs and Duma members, so they are available for mobilisation, which their fathers voted for

Russia's defence ministry has revealed a host of occupations that will be exempted from conscription aimed at boosting its war effort in Ukraine. IT workers, bankers and journalists working for state media will escape the "partial mobilisation" announced by President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday.

ORAC; quite true, when the device works. What in the last 7 months gives confidence that anything from Russia will work as advertised? What has been maintained, has been calibrated and inspected, checked? Watching S-300's doing home comings gives little confidence that complex systems have been kept any better than rotting tyres, and life exceeded cannon barrels. The Russians at Chernobyl and at Zaporizhzhia gave no evidence that they comprehend or care about the risks related to anything other than vodka, and not even that.:}

Thought they’d used those up on the Luhansk press-ganged conscripts. Wonder how many they have in stock - and who all the AK-47s/74s got sold off too…

Russian conscripts get Nagant/Mosin rifles, designed in 1890/91, and obsolete already at the times of WWII.

I wish people would stop using the word “Tactical” as if a “Tactical” nuclear weapon is ok, it’s a nuke period, and any nuclear weapon, regardless of size is NOT acceptable in any shape or form.

People who think as you do are the ones who will start World War III. Preventing World War III is in the interest of mankind. Thankfully, some of our other contributors have explained the details.

Are you referring to using a nuclear weapon against Ukraine?
I do not believe that they need a declaration to understand that they are at war, nor have they needed one since about 24 February 2022.

As per that later post from the guy correcting the first photo, LDNR units with sniper PU scoped Mosin's have been seen in early days of the Russian invasion and these appear to be fresh out of the storage crate PU snipers as well. They had 1000's still in storage. If you have been trained (not a certainty here of course) a factory fresh PU Mosin is still a very effective sniper rifle out to 600-700m range, and the 7.62x54R round will ruin your day at that range quite happily.
They do have a big drawback in that they have a ferocious muzzle blast, so not ideal on a modern (one side at least) battlefield.
