I think that should read “was selling”…

Another general has been jailed in #Russia

Major General Konstantin Ogienko has been sent to a pre-trial detention center on corruption charges. Until recently, he commanded the air defense army defending #Moscow.

The general was jailed for a bribe of 30 million rubles and land fraud. According to the investigation, Ogienko could sell land plots belonging to the air defense army for development.

But those SOP's cover selling any item of value, nailed down or not. This is selling the ground it was nailed to.

One of the benefit for Western arms manufactures, the success of IRIS-T systems that had few buyers pre war now has countries wanting it and is ramping up production.

ODENDORF, Germany, Sept 5 (Reuters) - German arms maker Diehl Defence aims to significantly ramp up the production of its IRIS-T air defence system to satisfy growing demand due to Russia's war on Ukraine, Chief Program Officer Harald Buschek said on Tuesday.

In 2025, the privately owned company plans to build at least eight systems, up from three to four systems this year, he told reporters at an air base in Todendorf in northern Germany.

He added that missile production was being tripled this year and would be further doubled next year, with an expected output of some 400 to 500 missiles from 2024.

Germany so far has supplied two IRIS-T units to Ukraine, where they are mainly used to guard Kyiv against Russian missile attacks.

Berlin has pledged to supply another six IRIS-T units to Kyiv, and expects to take delivery of the first of six systems for its own air force in October 2024.

Buschek said Ukraine had shot down more than 110 targets, most of these cruise missiles such as the Kalibr, with a hit rate of almost 100%.

The system successfully countered an attack on Kyiv by a swarm of 13 Russian cruise missiles at the start of the year, intercepting all missiles, Buschek said.

In the small town of Todendorf, Berlin will host the training of partner nations on the modern IRIS-T air defence system, one of the most coveted weapons that Kyiv has received from the West.

Boasting a range of some 40 kilometres (25 miles) and a 360 degree view, the IRIS-T SLM system has been used to shoot down cruise missiles that Moscow has attacked power stations with, and aircraft including Iranian-made Shahed drones.

Before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, only a few Western nations had purchased the system, reflecting a common trend after the Cold War to scale down air defences as the main threat from Russia was deemed to have gone.

Now, NATO allies are scrambling to order IRIS-T for their own militaries, with several countries on NATO's eastern flank such as Estonia and Latvia expected to sign contracts in the coming weeks.

Great to see our warbirds still fighting in Ukraine.

Here is the complete list of help we provided to Ukraine, not bad for a small nation like us.

https://www.oryxspioenkop.com/2023/0...eliveries.html

I'm only afraid this is it. Polls show that in elections in about 3 weeks the pro Russian coalition will prevail and in the worst case we will face some form of protofascism. Wish us luck, the current perspective is grim. 40 years under Soviet regime and then intensive hybrid war will take its toll.

I tip my cap.
(Have not been keeping up: will various NATO allies back fill the holes in Slovene aircraft inventory with stuff like F-16 or Eurofighter?)

Update: looks like Russian troop movements to counter the success of Ukraine's current offensive in the South.
Ukrainian counteroffensive - Russians redeploying reserves for defense to the south | RBC-Ukraine

Russian occupiers redeploying reserves for defense to the south

THU, SEPTEMBER 07, 2023 - 13:58 KATERYNA DANISHEVSKA
Russian occupiers are redeploying forces from other directions to conduct defense in the south, particularly in the Berdyansk and Melitopol directions, according to the director of the Planning and Application Department of the Main Directorate of the National Guard of Ukraine, Colonel Mykola Urshalovych.

"Heading by regrouping forces from other directions and reserves to reinforce units conducting defensive actions on the Berdyansk and Melitopol directions," he said.

Furthermore, according to him, despite significant losses, the enemy continues offensive actions in the Lyman, Avdiivka, and Mariupol directions, attempting counterattacks in the Bakhmut direction.

The situation in the Zaporizhzhia direction

On August 22nd, it was announced that Ukrainian defenders liberated Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region. Just yesterday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dmytro Kuleba, shared that the liberation of Robitne became possible thanks to a single unit of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, consisting of 31 soldiers. They crawled through minefields for 18 hours.

On August 29th, Natalia Humeniuk, the spokesperson for the Operational Command South, reported that the occupiers were retreating due to the breakthrough by the Ukrainian Armed Forces of their defensive line on the Zaporizhzhia front. On August 31st, it was announced that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had advanced deeper into the enemy's defenses on the Melitopol front.
The possibility of the Ukrainian Armed Forces breaking through the Russian defense lines by the end of the year stands at 40-50%. However, limited ammunition supplies and worsening weather conditions will make the task "very challenging," according to Trent Mall, Director of Analysis at the U.S. Department of Defense Intelligence.

In other news.
NATO does not believe that the incident with the fall of the debris of a Russian drone in Romania was an intentional attack by Russia, according to the NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, as reported by Reuters. Three days after the incident in Romania, NATO commented on the events. However, the alliance does not believe that it was an attack by Russia. "We don't have any information indicating an intentional attack by Russia, and we are awaiting the outcome of the ongoing investigation," NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told EU lawmakers.
Ukrainian military forces have eliminated over 300 Russian occupiers and destroyed three enemy ammunition depots in the Tavria direction over the past day, according to the commander of the Tavria Operational Strategic Group, Oleksandr Tarnavsky.
