Another Russian terrorist attack. From the New York Times, Russian attack on a big hardware store......What animals. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/25/w...l-ukraine.html

Russia bombed a hardware superstore in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on Saturday afternoon, killing at least six people and injuring at least 40 others, Ukrainian officials said. The attack was the latest in a sustained bombing campaign against the city that has made life increasingly difficult and dangerous for civilians.

Oleh Syniehubov, the head of the Kharkiv regional military administration, said that 16 people were still missing, suggesting that the death toll could rise. He added that another airstrike on Saturday, in the center of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, injured at least 14 people.

“For the entire day, Kharkiv has been under Russian terrorist strikes. The air raid in the Kharkiv region has been ongoing for more than 12 hours,” President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on social media.

Saturday’s attack, Mr. Zelensky added, underscored Ukraine’s recent calls on Western allies to provide it with air defense systems and other weapons capable of shooting down Russian missiles and the planes that launch the bombs. “If Ukraine had sufficient air defenses systems and modern combat aircraft, Russian strikes like this one would have been impossible,” he said.

Largest commercial supplier of security cameras and thermal imagers in Russia. Reportedly shut down as a result of a threat of sanctions and being blocked from western markets.

Half a million.
The entire population of Hannover, or Liverpool, or Miami, or Atlanta.
It is ~1,1% of fighting age (18-64) Russian men lost as KIA/WIA/MIA in not-a-war.
Just because of one man and his issues.
And the numbers keep climbing.

How many can they afford to loose before launching a major land war to the west, say Baltic States and Poland, would technically become impossible to them? Does the current shturm/cannon fodder strategy successfully keep their higher qualified staff available for more to come later on?

If he had those type of forces available he would have used them to smash his way to Kiev and end this on his terms.

Putler already threw in the best (VDV), their trainers and everything but the kitchen sink down to untrained prisoners (yes, they already had to close prisons due to lack of inmates).

It will take years to rebuild the capacity, but looking at how well the VDV did against Ukraine before being wiped out, Russia needs to get rid of the corruption along maskirovka, re-think their military doctrine, find and train the trainers, and start from scratch.

Meanwhile the meat waves keep being pushed forward.

The prospect of a reformed Russia is, sadly, in Unicorn territory. The moral and intellectual flaws are too deeply ingrained. We in the civilised world just need to be prepared for what that may bring in the future.

350 planes - 7500 Tanks.
How many Planes (I assume combat ready aircraft), and Tanks (Tanks that were running or only needed minor refurbishing), did Russia have to start with?

As it's been two years now, one assumes that Putin, gave out orders to 'industrialize up', when his SMO started to bog down after 6-9 months...
.
So how long does it take (I guess sanctions might slow down important parts), to build a Plane and Tank?

I would say two things come to mind,

one his offer to go back to the peace table based on the current front is possibly based on his lack of resources and a worry it may all turn around for his forces.

Two his charging senior officers with fraud is possibly more to do with him thinking their might have been a plot to oust him, so he is removing a perceived threat.

in the meantime.

More muttering about nuclear war from the town drunk.

Tanks - they had about 20000, out of which roughly 5500 beyond salvage (based on satellite imagery research). But vast majority is legacy from T55 to early T72's, and those can't be upgraded to this decade either at all or requires a lot of unavailable technology (sanctions do have an effect).
The more modern kit in active service have already been lost in action, and there were only a few thousand of those.

However, more important is the number of APC's, for those are giving fire support and protection to troops. Over 50% of those have already been destroyed and to emphasize it we have already seen destroyed BTR-50's initial design done in 1952, probably the design was approved by Stalin himself. It doesn't protect the troops even from AK fire so the situation must be bad.

Now as building new ones is slow (best guess estimates vary but seen numbers from 10 to 30 per month) the faster option is to repair existing stock and what can be salvaged from the battle field. That is not very fast either as the easily repairable ones are already in service.

In January the official Kremlin statement was that Russia would have delivered over 100 fixed wing aircrafts (new and repaired) and 150 rotary wing aircrafts to the military in 2023.
Actual figures are most likely just a fraction of that.

Russia is burning through its resources, slowly but surely. Without decades of corruption (eg higher ranks selling engines from tanks and pocketing the cash) and maskirovka (eg. falsifying documentation claiming the aforementioned tanks are in perfect service order) Russia would be a very different power. Maybe even super power. Currently they are the second best army in Ukraine.

Sweden has authorized Ukraine to use Swedish-delivered weapon systems against targets in Russia.

"Ukraine may use Swedish weapons against targets in Russia. It is a welcome announcement from the Minister of Defense."

Sweden delivered a range of weapon systems to Ukraine, among them at least eight Archer FH77BW SPHs. The Archers receives the highest praises from Ukrainian artillery soldiers, calling it a sniper artillery.

Taking advantage of the Biden adninistration's insane policy of blocking Ukraine from firing at Russians across the border, a new airfield is being built to scale up Russia's air assaults on Kharkiv and Sumy regions.

Russians will now be able to totally destroy both regions with no risk of ever losing a plane.

Biden's Safe Zone.

Russian forces are nearing completion of a military airfield 80 km from Kharkiv Oblast. Meanwhile, Ukraine is prohibited from using Western-supplied weapons to target military facilities on russian territory, as this would be deemed an escalation🤡

German politicians reinforcing Polish plans to guard western Ukraine…
p German politician Kiesewetter advocates that a coalition of willing takes over air defense over western Ukraine. In this way, Ukraine could be relieved there. Protection could reach 100 km in ukrainian territory.

Russia is outpacing the west by 3-1 in the production of shells, though someone points out that Russia includes small calibre in that figure, while the west is mainly 155mm.
