Makes you wonder how all these students get caught out though...
I'm sure if OASC were trawling, the friends request would not be from 'OASC' featuring the RAF Roundel.

You can choose your settings on facebook so that your profile is open to just "friends", just your "network" (usually geographical, i.e. your home town, but could still include thousands of people you don't know), or everyone on facebook. Er ...apparently.

My own personal feeling is if that you're too stoopid to manage your privacy on a site a simple as facebook, you're probably too stoopid for the RAF to want you. Or Oxbridge, for that matter, which is probably why they're so enraged.

ALM, the answer is simply Yes and No.

Simply maths would reveal the answer. How many employers get 12000 applicants? How long would it take to match them with Facebook?

How many people would be needed?

Indeed how many employers put applicants through a 4-day sift?

The computers at Cranwell won't let you get anywhere near facebook so probably not, lol.

joining the raf with de diagnosed asthma

hi i was wondering if its possible for the doctor to erase your asthma history. could i still join with asthma?

Recent articles in 'The Times' have highlighted the growing use of networking sites such as 'Facebook' and 'Myspace' by employers to 'vet' potential applicants. With this in mind, does anyone know if OASC has resorted to these tactics?
I've not heard of them gleaming information off facebook, but I have off forums such as this one and the student room. Especially at IOT level. They're not shy to point it out either.

could i still join the united states airforce because i have dual passports.
well i still basiCALLY HAVE ASTHMA BUT IV BEEN EXERCSING HARD FOR 5 DAYS AND AM PLANNIGN ON DOING IT FOR 5 WEEKS. I DO 4 2 MILE RUINS A DAY. DO I STILL HAVE A CHANCE OF EVAN JOINING THE USAF

Joey, apply and see. Asthma is usually pretty a pretty clear cut no, but OASC is the place with the medical staff so why not ring them rather than trying to get medical advice off a internet forum?

Spindlethis, also true at the schools too. An ex-ATCO, chopped Nav spilt his life story on here. Only one person fitted the bill.

Don't know the upshot but I guess he didn't get a 3rd or 4th chance.
Yes, I heard of a couple of people on here getting dropped in it.

One person I know had their whole posting history on display on a slide during an IOT presentation. Needless to say, they'd figured out who most of the course were.

Running everyday doesn't really have the same effect on the body as being at 35,000 feet on 100% oxygen in a jet, or hauling kit across a sandy place in 40 degree heat.

Point is, there are plenty of applicants with 100% health who excel at the selection boards and it's just a matter of picking the best of them. I have apparently 6/6 vision but could have slight myopia so they failed me, and I can see why. Why take a person who isn't as good as the next? The RAF can afford to be picky at selection.

Spindlethis isn't suggesting that you aren't getting in the RAF, he's just saying that not many people will be applying to join the RAF from Madeira from 1992... It's simple.

At risk of dragging this thread back to it's original topic -


Can anyone in the know confirm which helos in the RN carry observers? I've looked through the RN website and the literature I was given whilst applying but there are some discrepancies between different publications/web pages. So far it seems that they all agree the following do carry observers:

Lynx Mk8
Sea King ASaC
Merlin Mk1

But the following I'm not sure about:

Lynx AH.7
Sea King Mk4
Sea King Mk5

Also, if one day I should decide to pursue an ATPL after leaving, would the skills gained and hours spent observering count for anything in the same way an ex-military pilot who is doing an ATPL might only need to certain parts of the course?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Simple answer is no. You would have to do all of the exams and pay for the flying.

Thanks (again!), that's what I expected to be honest. It's not something I have to worry about for a long while yet, so it gives me time to save the £60k I'll be needing. I'd assume some of the actual skills are relative (navigation, cockpit management etc) and make the course somewhat easier though, as I wouldn't be starting from scratch completely with aviation?

You will of course gain good CRM and airmanship skills as a Navy Observer but the navigation side wont really matter as Airline pilots just follow the FMC.

Another RN observer question I'm afraid.

Do observers get any flying training alongside their other more obvious roles of navigation etc? Having read several publications on observer training, I'm still not sure how to interpret phrases like 'secondary roles' and 'aircraft control' --> could an observer conceivably take control of an aircraft in an emergency for example?

Sorry if I'm being daft; 'twould not be the first time. I'm confident I would accept an offer for observer, but I'd like to be able to justify that at the AIB.

MDR and the aptitude test (OASC)

Hi all,

I have recently submitted my P2 application for commissioned aircrew and am attending the presentation at AFCO in 2 weeks. (and subsequently the suitability interview)

Prior to my screening interview, and potential offer to attend OASC, i'd like to ask if anyone has any advice reference the aptitude tests, specifically: MDR/mathematical reasoning and symbol rotation.

Ive heard of websites that may offer similar tests, I just want to sharpen my skills ahead and prepare as best I can.

Is there any books/sites you could recommend for basic speed/distance/time problems?

I am keeping on top of current affairs and fitness, i have some leadserdhip/command experience being a JNCO, it's just my mathematical side needs a kick start before I take the plunge.

apologies if this topic has been done to death or I have missed a previous post on the same matter.

Just interested as you appear to be 27 in your profile and that makes you too old for Pilot/WSO. Anyway this site has basic maths on it......http://www.thatquiz.com/ .Hope that helps
