Clearly I'm behind the times again, but what is this video of which you speak? Can somebody send me a link?
And yes, you can easily go 12 years and never have a problem in the sim. But should sim checks be a lottery?

Emirates Pilot Roadshow

Hello guys, Emirates is about to come to my city, I already have a “process” with them but haven’t heard from them since 5 month ago (hirevue) and still says “under review”.
I’m planning to assist to the roadshow, could you please give me pieces of advice?
what kind of questions will they ask, are they the same questions as the online interview or what to expect from them?
I’m planning to wear a suit, but what do you think?
there’s no information anywhere so I will really appreciate your advice.
thank you in advance!

An interesting read is the is the latest EK Press release, how they are rolling out the Red Carpet for experienced Airbus Captains for the A380.

And how everything is wonderful in EK and Dubai.

Its amazing what you forget, and what you get used too, the Turkish guy really did nail it with his description of events and the depiction of life within the confines of EK.
As BG said.."why should the sim be a lottery?"
Understand the reality of the place, make your money...then leave, best advice I was ever given.

If you can’t get into EK at the moment, then throw your licence away, you are hopeless!!!

Don’t they give you a fresh new GCAA license in the UAE when you sign up anyway, to avoid those annoying new joiner issues? (The GCAA license is of course worthless when you leave the UAE anyway). Mates with DUI couldn’t get a second officer prop rank back home, yet are now senior P1s on Ek 380 in the pit. Who needs a pilots license to join Ek anyway, mate ☺️

The bidding system has been awful over the last couple of years!! The old system used to be a lot better, as long as one knew how to use it properly!
BUT the old system created satisfaction and that is not desired by EK!

Minimum days off is 8 and that is what you can expect on the 777. 380 will be more like 12 but you will do more hours (typically around 100 block hours for captains at the moment but the FO rosters are catching up quickly). The bidding system is not worthy of the name. If you get one thing you ask for (for example, "layover in Europe") you bid is 100% satisfied and the computer will stop looking for other stuff to keep you happy. As a previous poster said, it sometimes seems that satisfaction is not only unimportant but actively discouraged!

so your possibly only home 8 days? Is that a month or is a roster 4 weeks? wow I would have thought with the long haul flying you would get a fair bit more than that.

If you get offered a job you will be asigned a fleet. You may be allowed to express a preference but they will put you where they need you. 737 pilots can end up on the Airbus and 320 pilots can end up on the Beoing. There doesn't seem to be any logic to it sometimes. The 777 does a lot less long haul than the 380 and a lot more turnarounds so you will usually be home more than 8 days a calandar month, but be aware there are some long freighter trips on the Boeing fleet (and a lot of deadheading) so you could be away for up to 7 days at a time, then have 2 days off, then go away again. There will also be some rest days in there from all the night flying you will be doing, typically 3 or 4. However, when you get home at 9am after a night turnaround you will basically be sleeping most of the day. I'd say generally both fleets spend about the same amount of time in Dubai over an average month but rosters vary considerably month to month.

You may be under the impression that Emirates is a long haul airline with 3 or 4 trips away every month and a lot of time off. It isn't, it is nothing like that and the mix of flying in the Middle East is probably unique. Do not apply to Emirates thinking it will be good for your family life and you will spend lots of time at home.

I guess we have different experiences of Emirates - I assume you on the boeing. This is all I do - 4 trips, sometimes 5 a month. If you count the days you arrive home before 9am as a day at home then I typically have about 18 days a month at home and that is on a 100 hour roster.

And man do I wish we had some of the freighter trips with all the deadheading in first.

As I said, rosters do vary.

You arrive home before 9am. Having flown through the night. And you are counting that as a day off? I would think it’s a day to recover. And if you are doing 100 hours a month, long haul, with 18 days “off”, you are really getting hammered on your days on.

sorry I don’t believe u are doing 100 block in 12 days
housten for excample is a 16 hour flight you will be credited 24 for the entire trip you spend 56 hours there - the hole thing takes already 5 days min - leaving at begin at 3am arriving at 6am in the end
88 or so is the target productivity so a min of two of those is need and you barely achieve 60 % productivity

I never said it was a day off. I said it was a day at home. The implication going around here is that you disappear for 22 days of the months never to see your wife and kids. Take it any way you wish.

I never said anything about block hours. The 100 hours is credit hours. Houston is worth 31.2 hours and I don't give a rats how many block hours it is. They pay me for the 31 hours, not 24. Houston also leaves at 08h20 and arrives back at 19h45.

in the end

I have no idea what this means.

For October, I have 95 hours credit plus manual handling - let's add 3 hours for that. I have also taken the liberty of adding 3.5 hour for the 1 day of leave I have. Again, make of that whatever you want.

Breaking up the 95 hours, I have 4 trips, 11 pink days ie days off, 3 rest days, 1 standby day and the sim session. 3 of the 4 trips will have me home before 9am.
