Airlines with own employees at BHX?

Hey guys,

I am 18 and currently in college undertaking my A levels.

I am an aviation enthusaist, frequent flyer, someone who has French and German language skills and much more!

Though I have seen a mixture of both handling agent company uniforms and airlines own uniforms many times when flying from BHX. Today I saw even more! Today I saw a lot more Brussels Airlines staff own uniform (is swissport handling them anymore?) Im sure I saw at least 2 Lufthansa employees, I remember seeing a Continental (now United) uniform being worn and saw a position posted by Continental at BHX 2 years ago and also remember one of my my mother's cousins working for Continental at BHX. (It was funny seeing him all the time at the gate when we were travelling Continental as the US is my second home) and there are many more sightings I have had.

I have always dreamed of having a PSA job whilst in college in order to start getting my experience of workin in aviation (I know pilot and PSA are 2 different things...) I have also always wanted to work for one of my favourite airlines that serve BHX. However, I see a majority of ground handling company uniforms being worn so am confused whether the airlines have some of their own staff. I dont mind having to work for a ground handling company (if I really ahve too!) but I would prefer to work directly with an airline as it may have some advantage should I hopefully become a pilot and start looking at airlines such as United (I have US citizenship) Air France and city jet (I have French language skills), Emirates etc... Also, wearing my favourite airlines uniform with pride will be great!

Anyways, I hope you guys can help me out a bit and tell me how to get directly into the airlines (its like its a secret club!) and people I need to contact.

When I was in year 10 I applied for work-experience with Lufthansa and received a letter back from the station manager (the letter was a real official Lufthansa letter as it had the headings, logo etc.... ) and they told me they would love to have me, but I was too young... although, They did say write back to us in the future! I sent a letter to Flybe, and once again it was officially Flybe as it had teh headings and stuff. I was told I was too young... I applied to Air France-KLM but I got a servisair letter back... However, I have flown Air France-KLM on 2 occasions this year and have seen 2 employees with Air France-KLM uniform.

Anyways, If you can provide me with info on how to get in with Air France-KLM, Lufthansa, Brussels Airlines (brilliant staff at BHX today my mother and sister missed their flight because of my niece's US esta visa issue (my mother and sister are both citizens of the US like me; except my 4 month year old niece), United (would they like a British-American and Canadian citizen on hand ) Emirates (Ive seen many Emirtaes employees in company uniform at BHX) and the station managers of these airlines, it would be great! I also dont mind if you give me info on any other airlines who have their own staff (Ive seen a Thomson PSA before) its just that the ones I have listed, I have travelled with often (my frequent flyer status reflects that ) and I know about their products and services.

I hope you guys can help!

Nice post btw

I read it and it lit up my day feeling all that enthusiasm bursting throught the lines....

If I was a recruiter of an Airline I would drop you a wee line...

What I will say is most Airline jobs (apart from crew) seem to be taken by the top GHA staff (poached), and therefore I would look at maybe approaching 1 of the better GHA's at BHX for a position in either PAX Services or Operations.
The only drawback with this approach is that some GHA's feed on an individuals enthusiasm and get up and go attitude until they wither you down to the level they want you to be:
an under payed, under appreciated number....

Sorry for bursting any bubbles, it wasnt my intention just a reality check honest....

Most of the airlines ground handling uniforms that you will have seen will be worn by Handling agent staff. It's an Airlines way of having a dedicated team without the Tax and PAYE implications of recruiting their own staff.

Getting into an Airline does indeed seem impossible to those on the periphery of the Industry. Handling agents tend to recruit locally via newspapers and local job agencies.

You could also go online and search for the various Station Manager & HR contacts at BHX. Most airport websites list contacts for all their resident airlines.

It says on here that you're 18 and a frequent flyer so am presuming finances aren't a major issue. If that is the case (if not, i apologise for my presumption) and you really want to get into an Airline why not apply for an Internship or that you will work for them for free on the proviso that they give you a job afterwards. You have nothing to lose via this method and am sure they will applaud you for thinking outside the box.

Good luck & am keen to hear how you get on with your search.

Hey inspectorgadget,

Thanks for responding. It’s always good to see more responses and inputs.

Well when I saw those agents with uniforms, I asked them whether they were contracted or hired directly by the airline. They told me they were work directly for the airline. Its funny how most agents at LAX (my father lives in LA so I fly there a lot as it’s my second home. Hence why I have US citizenship) seem to be directly hired by the airline they are representing; yet here there are not many. Or are most of them at the London airports?

I’m a little bit lost when you said that since I’m 18 and a frequent flyer, that finances may not be an issue for me. Care to elaborate? don’t worry, im not going to get mad

In regards to contacting the airlines; I emailed Brussels Airlines HR office in Brussels (where else would it be? ) and sent my cover letter and a cv explaining why I want to work for them etc.. And asked whether they have any jobs at BHX or if I could volunteer. They replied back saying due to social legislation, they can’t take un-paid voluntary workers... don’t know what that is supposed to mean...

I really don't mind volunteering as you can see... But I am hoping they will see how enthusiastic I am and offer me a position... AERGID stated that a lot of agents who work directly with the airline are from those who work at ground handling companies. Should I get a volunteer position with say servisair, I would hope to at least hope to then get ''poached'' by an airline...

Anyways, I will definitely try to contact some of the station managers at BHX at Emirates, United, Lufthansa etc... As well as the ground handling companies. I did some searches on Linkedin and found some station manager profiles for those at BHX. So I will make a Linkedin and see if they reply. If not, I will just post my CV and cover letter...

Btw, what do you work as and for which company if I may ask?

Once again, thank you so much for responding and I will definitely tell you how I get on.

You will find that air the smaller airports the jobs that are available with the airlines are things like ticket agents and customer service type roles.

The interesting jobs, like dispatch and operations will be carried out by handling agents.

At the larger airports in the UK,LHR and LGW, and to a lesser extent MAN, you will have a far better chance of getting a job with an airline.

I dont imagine you would get a voluntary position with a handling agent. Its also entirely the wrong time of year to be trying to get a job in the industry in the UK.

Best advice would be to apply to the handling agents at the start of 2013 and see where it goes from there.

You'll be lucky to get a job with an airline at any UK regional airport, and will too find it difficult at LHR/LGW, as airlines usually poach staff from handling agents who have the relevant skills.

The likes of EK/QR/EY tend to employ a handful of airline reps at places like Manchester but it's who you know, not what you know

Hey bigbluebroxi,

I only want a passenger service/ ticketing role as mentioned.

Why wont I be able to get a volunatry role with a handling company? I mean, dont employers like free workers these days?!

Menzies have told me that they are keeping my cv for 6 months (I dont know if they are telling the truth) the last time I heard from servisair was when the training manager emailed me back. I emailed him again this year but I think he left... So when I was at the airport last wednesday helping my mother and sister check in at Lufthansa. I asked the moody and rude check-in girl who knew nothing about basic US entry requirements (nor did the other servisair staff so they had to ask a brussels airlines agent as tehy do ticketing for them) and she kept complaining saying she hates her job, airports and cant afford to travel (sorry for going off track) anyways, I asked her if there were any vacancies and she replied with a moody no... then I asked her who her training manager was and she replied: I dunno.... then I asked her who her manager was and she replied: I dunno... (how could you not know who your manager is?!) Im not gonna try swissport anymore as they dont reply whether its the HR people at the airport or main Swissport HR department.

Anyways, I will check out whats on for 2013

Hey 750xl,

Im still confused about how they poach staff? For example, if im a psa for servisair and I decide I want to work for Lufthansa (who servisair handle) do I go to the Lufthansa station manager?

Emirates has some of their own ticket agents in BHX as I mentioned. And one day one of them women who is an Emirates agent at BHX said to look online... But anyways, I guess I will send a letter explaining if I could vlounteer and see what happens...

Servisair handle Lufthansa and LH will employ a few station managers but I doubt they have any other employees there.

Getting a job with an airline is very hard as 750XL says. I worked for swissport for 4 years and failed to get past a phone interview with continental (now united).
Sad to say I now work in an office Monday to Friday 9-530. The pay was just too bad, the conditions were just worse than the lack of money and my body clock died a slow and painful death at 4am starts throw in 2 written off cars, a permenant bad back, managemnet were just out for themselves, many a problem with depression and mood swings and a tried and failed accident at work claim when I sprained my foot.
The only good thing I got out of it was my boyfriend (the poor soul still works there, albeit in operations)

HOWEVER, please don't let this put you off. I feel you should be warned, I wouldn't want to sugar coat the reality of this job. I still miss the buzz of the airport. I just get frustrated sitting at my desk, not to mention I've put on weight
It was amazing experience and if the right job ever came back up I'd jump at it like a frog on drugs. But I think the only way I'd be uber happy about going back would be to work for the airport themselves or become a pilot (working on that one!)

Any questions feel free to ask I hope I haven't put too much of a dampner on your enthusiasm - don't lose that, it's the one thing that will keep you going!

Lizz is correct regarding the terms and conditions, working hours etc etc. They really are shocling, BUT its a very interesting environment to work in and I certainly get a lot of job satisfacttion.

What 750XL means is that the airlines will hire people who have worked on their product whilst employed by the handling agent, and as a result they know are trustworthy and capable of doing the joib required. Virtualy all the staff I have encountered who are employed by an airline have been at a handling agent in the first instance.

It really is a who you know industry.

Can I ask why you want to volunteer when its likely you would get a paid position with a handling agent? They will start recruiting around the end of february so look out for advertisements then in the local papers and the directgov job centre website.

Regarding the check in agent, I can understand her gripes, although its no excuse for poor service. She will be getting paid not much more than minimum wage to get out her bed at silly o'clock in the morning and take all sorts of grief from folk, both colleagues, managers and passengers (not aimed at yourself and family btw).

If you would rather miss out the handling agent altogether then perhaps cabin crew is a route you should look at if you are desperate to work for an airline, and then look to go into a ground role later on.

Cool

TBH I hate to say it but broxi is correct (just due to his name ). Go for Cabin Crew and not a GHA.
At least once you work for an Airline (NOT AN LCC) you will get ID90's and information on internal employment opprortunities as well as Airline Training on their specific product....

IMHO keep away from PSA work for a GHA. Either Cabin Crew or at least Dispatcher (Flight Coordinator) position for a GHA.

Again GL

How did you apply for the position with continental? was there a vacancy? or did you go up to the station manager and expressed your interest? Continental posted a vacancy in BHX 2 years ago. But I was still in school...

Wow, you really been through a lot in regards to swissport overworking you! I doubt they can do that here in BHX since they lost most of their contracts... To be honest, I dont mind having a 4 am start. Though, it has to be on a saturday as I said, Im doing my A levels at the moment. I think with my quite good college time table, I would be able to work 28 hours a week. (I can perhaps do 12-14 hours on a saturday 6 hours on a friday and 6 on wednesday.) Plus since Im quite enthusiastic about working in passenger services/ ticketing, Im sure I would hope outta bed without any trouble

I was speaking to a girl who used to do passenger services with servisair at Manchester, and she told me that she really missed it. I guess that's the trouble with this industry, its just sooo interesting that you dont wanna leave.

Its really cool you wanna be a pilot! as I mentioned, I want to be a pilot and I am currently undertaking my a levels. But I want to do a pharmacy degree as a back up plan. And hopefully the BA FPP scheme is would still be around in like 10 years...

Dont worry, you havent dampen my spirits. However, I do feel quite upset that getting into an airline is complicated...

Hey bigblue,

I heard and kinda know that the hours are shocking and that I would only be able to do at least like up to 28 hours since Im currently undertaking my A-levels. But thats what I have to accept. As mentioned, I would like to be a pilot in the future and that I will have to accept these conditions.

How long would it take for someone to get an interview with the airline whilst working for a GHA?

in regards to volunteering, Im just hoping they will see my enthusiasm and should they want to offer me a position or if one comes up, then they will hopefully see me first. I would prefer to vlounteer for an airline. But should I be accepted as a volunteer with a GHA, it would also be great as you mentioned, they usually advertise for febuary so I will hopefully be accepted on to a paid position. As I may have said, Servisair handle most of the airlines at BHX and therfore I would prefer to get into them.

Well thats what I thought about her... But then again, she accepted that job and should accept what she has gotten herself into...

In regards to undertaken a cabin crew role, I can only do this on a seasonal/summer basis as I said, Im in college. I know that Monarch has some of its own PSA and ticking agents at BHX because Ive seen vacancies and people in the Monarch uniform. I have also seen a few Thomson and Thomas cook employees in their company uniform. I have in fact been waiting for some seasonal cabin crew contracts to open up.

Hey Aergird,

As I said, I can only do cabin crew work on a seasonal basis. And I have infact been waiting for the chartered seasonal vacancies open at BHX. Do the charters even give ID 90, ZED etc.. tickets?

That is also one of teh reasons why I want to work for an airline is because of the tickets (why not?)

By the way, does servisair, swissport or menzies give travel benefits? when I spoke with the ex-servisair girl from Manchester. She told me you would get stand-by only. if this was the case, would you have to pay for the ticket? what is the percentage you get off? can you use it on airlines that your company does not handle and use it at other airports? can you use it on connecting flights and is it recognised abroad? can you get stand-by discounted or complimentary J class upgrades? can family and freinds use it? I also spoke to a swissport girl at BHX one day, and she told me they only get stand-by as well...

Thnaks for the good luck I will need it...

I don't mean to piss on your bonfire but...

IMO you should put all your time and energy into your A-levels then worry about a job afterwards. Working in the aviation industry isn't all that it's cracked up to be with awful hours and equally as terrible pay.

Your best bets are to finish college, get decent grades and wait for the summer temp jobs to appear with various handling agents. You won't be earning more than £7 p/h in them roles and you'll be worked to death, trust me

I work with some people who have over 30 years experience in the aviation industry but are stuck dispatching for £8p/h because there simply aren't any jobs going anywhere for experienced staff, let alone people with no experience. Our station has just announced another 50 redundancies...

Stick to college and keep an eye out on the various websites and you may get lucky.

In regards to staff travel...

I can't speak for other handling agents but at Servisair one of the few benefits we have left is staff standby travel on TOM/TCX/MON. You can also try your luck with other airlines too, if you contact some directly they'll give you aviation staff discount.

I did have a pretty rubbish time at swissport, just miss the atmosphere. Ill stress I live in Manchester, I saw the job for continental on indeed, I found the better jobs went up on there. Swissport now at MAN only do 30 hour contracts as standard however you'll struggle only working certain days, I know parents with young children struggled with this and they had a legal reason for flexible working!

You do get standby, you have to pay the taxes, but getting time off with one of these GHAs is so difficult anyway you probably won't bother.

I knnow a guy who I worked with though who now works on the monarch ticket desk full time but he really is an exception to the rule.

The problem is the people who work for airlines/airports rather than handling agents is they know they have it good. Better pay, better benefits, better company all round, noone wants to leave!

Defintiely try indeed though, they are the best job site out there IMHO.

I too am afraid that I will be raining on your parade, i luv aviation.

It's great to hear that you have enthusiasm, motivation and determination to work in some capacity with an airline ... but despite enjoying your posts, I have to remind you - as gently as possible - that you really need to look at bit at the way you present yourself when writing, because that is the first 'look' at you a prospective employer is likely to get!!

Please be aware of inversions in your spelling - teh - is probably the most obvious one, and the lack of apostrophes when punctuating ... for example Im or its (instead of it's) and try to avoid contractions I'm instead of I am or it's rather than it is in written English. You also need to avoid Americanisms ... wanna and kinda should not appear in written English. You should also remember that companies such as Swissport, Menzies and Servisair are 'proper nouns' and therefore start with capital letters.

I know that I sound to be a real dinosaur, but these elements of your written English, plus your lack of paragraphing do give a negative image which probably does you a disservice. It makes you seem rather 'slap-dash' in your writing, and that you are not reading through what you write and correct any mistakes you see. I appreciate that this is a friendly forum where you can use a writing style similar to your pattern of speech, but the way you write does rather detract from the image of the go-ahead and enthusiastic young person who wants to commit to a job involving interaction with the public and also work in an accurate and methodical manner ... there is little room for improvisation in the type of job you are hoping to do, though a positive and 'can do' approach is a great asset.

Check what you write ... as I try to do when I post (including this post to avoid typos and missing words out!) ... and when it's a question of filling in an application form (especially if there are parts of the form that require you to explain your reasons for applying for the post or asking you what you could offer the company that another potential employee could not), think very carefully and make a rough draft of what you are going to say, making sure you answer the question asked and not what you want to tell your employer before you write out your final version on the form itself ... and keep a photocopy/print a download before you send it so you can refer back to what you actually wrote before your interview!

All the very best for your A levels ... though I was a bit concerned to see that you were undertaking them rather than taking them. DO check the difference here!!

I wish you well and really hope that you will find your way into the industry that has attracted you from an early age.
