Angel The new Qantas uniform...who did the homework on this one?

I am now the owner of a brand new set of duds referred to as the new Qantas uniform...'interesting' is the best description of this uniform.

Now - before I begin - I want to make it clear that I trying to be as objective as possible. I neither like or dislike the uniform, and accept that there is no way in hell that you can get every single staff member to like the one uniform - so compromises need to be made. But I am highlighting the major impracticalities of what would be an otherwise lovely uniform...

The jacket - nice design, but why only two buttons? Could we not spare the third button (standard on most single breasted jackets)? And the lining...I look like I'm about to go to Marrickville RSL with this lining (and the point of it is? WHO is going to see the lining when, as most of the time requires according to the manual, the jacket is to be buttoned up?)

The material on the jackets and pants - it's simply not going to last. In my past life (in menswear...Captain Peacock are you freeeee?), wool crepe has a nasty habit of self destructing within a year. I actually owned a suit and wore it much like a uniform (only at work, 2 pairs of pants, etc). and the material wore out and lost shape very quickly. Customers came back with the suit when it started to fall apart at the crotch (a traditionally 'high use' area)...so I only hope there is a bit more wool and little less polyester, as was the case from my many bad experiences of the past...

The shirts...hmmmm...the stretchy fabric thing was a nice idea...but did anyone try it on for a 4 sector day? I dropped a shirt as I was ironing it (testing to see how hot I could iron it without melting...charming) and it crumpled up like a Smiths Crisp...and I had to do it all over again. If my shirt can't stand falling on the floor for 2 seconds, how in gods' name is it going to withstand sitting a cramped jumpseat for landing, takeoff, bending, stretching, twitching (on those Maroochydore flights), etc...

And for the record, my old cotton shirts dropped creases in seconds - these new ones will make us all look like we've slept in them after just one sector (and here's me thinking I can hold onto the glamour for at LEAST the whole work day!). God help the kids at Long Haul who sleep in them...not a good look!

The print dress - again, another nice idea, but don't count on receiving them for a little while yet. Apparently they have a nasty habit of melting (just like pantyhose) when you go down a slide...not what I would call handy, for an FA at least...

The Day Bag... ...Now...to put this into perspective, I took my uniform to another Link Chicks house. This little Link Chick just happens to be more camp than a row of tents (and they're not female). This little Link Chick carries a clear purse with a fluro pink pom-pom on top of the cart to collect bar money.

When I presented the Day Bag to said little Link Chick, the following happened:
a) he squealed
b) he quickly put it on
c) he froze, looked at me; then turned without indicating
d) and said "This is too camp - even for me!"

For the girls, it's a great bag - unless of course you wish to carry around an A4 document (like a magazine, study folder, etc)...in which case, leave it behind - cause it won't fit! As for the statement "fits laptops"...WHAT laptops? Those Palm handheld ones??? Where? If I can't fit an A4 study folder in this bag, where then do I put it? Trolley bag? On a Day Trip? YEAH - right...and considering us boys aren't allowed to use anything else it's either "ALL STOPS TO CAMPVILLE" or wallets in pockets kids!

My solution is simple:
a) Change the fabric in the jacket and pants - keep the design (and maybe change the lining to something a bit more, oooh, I don't know - BETTER?)
b) Change the fabric of the shirts - keep the design - so we don't all look like we've played rugger before each shift by the time we get there
c) Give the boys a bit more of a 'masculine' bag (just like the current day bag - only modified...even if it includes that bloody kangaroo on the front!)

I realise I've probably opened the floodgates, but dammit it all people...

IT'S JUST NOT PRACTICAL!

How is a Link Chick meant to look pretty all day with all this against them?

I agree with some of what your saying, I have used the day bag and it actually is a great Bag. Yes 3 buttons would have been better.Well i guess time will tell with the uniform bottom line is ok once it get ratty take it back get a new one, and if shirts look crushed well thats the look they want! Suppose It could have been worst we could have had to pay for it like alot of carriers do.

The issue with the wrinkled shirts - well that wont be an issue! In Long Haul, there is no stage where the customers will actually see the shirt. Jackets on in the terminal, boarding, demo etc . Then all crew bar the CSM wear the serving jacket for the rest of the flight, and change again before landing - again with jackets on.

Similar in shorthaul/ regional - crew wear jackets whenever off the plane, jackets or serving vests during flight.

For one, I am happy with the uniform. Having to spend so much time in SIN & BKK, to have a uniform made of lighter material will be great, as we have to wear our jackets in that heat. At the moment, with the current jackets, you get to the aicraft/ hotel dripping in sweat just from the heat and humidity.

I think the shirts are fantastic, it is about time we had a more fitted style shirt, rather than everyone looking like they are wearing a great big white potato sack!

There is nothing I see impractical about the uniform, it is flattering, comfortable and modern.

And it is great to see that the Grooming standards have become more universal. Eg now everyone has to wear jackets off the aircraft , not just LongHaul.

To have all crew with similar standards is great.

well i picked mine up today also....

Its nice and was like christmas opening all the boxes!
overall i like it, but still have a few probs with the design...

i, being a lady, received the handbag (not too bad size, bigger than what i thought) and suitpack which i like very much.
Trolley case... give me 2 weeks before it falls apart dosent look very well made!

Onto the uniform:

I received the wrong size shirts... and all short sleeved so will need to fix this before i can wear it. I want at least 1 long sleeve thanks!
Scarf thing that attaches to shirts is going to be a NIGHTMARE it buttons on in 100 different positions and either strangles you too tightly or shows waaaay to much cleavage... boys in the FD will love that one!

Why does the shirt only have a pen holder? who uses them? when you stick a pen in it it looks god awful. why not a normal pocket with a pen spot at back of pocket like old uniform???
Not too keen on the stretchy material either, shows too many curves if you know what i mean (or mabye that was me trying on a shirt that was too small..... anyway...)

Jacket:
I think mine is a bit small.... there is no pocket on the breast that enables you to stick things in (pens, brenclear, usual stuff) so you have to rely on non existant shirt pen holder and pockets in pants and skirt for everything else.
Pockets on hips are 'faux' pockets. great.

Vest... pocket is TINY and i wouldnt fit my id inside it.
I am the sort of person that carries EVERYTHING on me, pens, sachets, gloves, watch, etc HELP!!!

Overcoat: Brilliant cant wait to wear it

Pants + skirt are great too...

Belt is fine...

earrings....... looks like i need to re-peirce my ears to wear these little gems!

No name badges yet, heard there is a slight problem and these need to be remade so that they can go through the metal detectors without beeping....

AND NEXT WEEK IS THE CUTOVER!

(Btw: if any girls have size 14 shirts they want to swap for size 12s let me know!)

Mr seatback,

I also gasped when I opened my christmas wrapping to reveal the new Qantas " Esky" ...whoops Qantas " Day bag "....but,I believe in time I will begin to like it because it is practical. I like how it straps on to the trolley bag as I am always struggling getting from the car park to the terminal without having dropped my day bag 10times. Give it time my friend.

As for the shirts...I LOVE them, I am quite slim and the current shirts are very baggy on me, I am sick of having to tuck it in constantly and be concious about what pax can see when I reach up to close a locker. I like the embroided kangaroo and the new shirt fits me perfectly making me look in proportion for my height - thank-god !

I like the mens trousers, but was shocked at the fake pockets at the back, that means that now all the guys will be worrying about how big their butts appear !

Please remember that this is the first trial of the uniform, as has been clearly stated QF are aware that there will be problems and complaints. These will be fixed and if necessary certain parts of the uniform will be replaced with new materials etc.

For me though personally, I love it. It feels comfortable and very light. I'd prefer the "tell-him-he's-dreaming" ..whoops I mean WUNALA dreaming prints compared to baggy shirts anyday !

Don't worry mr seatback - you will still look pretty !

She'sgreatintheGalley !!

Well, hate to say it - but youre the reason this uniform is the way it is (no offence)

The uniform has been designed so as customers cant see pens, and pockets stuffed full of .... well ...... stuff !!

It's been designed to be very streamlined, nothing visible except the uniform.

The pen clip you are referring to on the shirts is actually an ID holder, we have had them on men's shirts for some time.

If you look in the pocket of the pants/ skirt/ dress you will find there is a pen-pocket in all of them - the only place they want you to put pens.

QFSkywalker

Same mate, it's about time people who manage to keep themselves in shape can wear a shirt that shows off their 'shape' ... instead of the old way of making uniforms for the largest possible figure and expecting everyone to look good in them !!!

The day bag I will never use, like the last day bag !!!

The international size trolley bag seems to be a lot sturdier than my current one, and it has lasted me about two years now !!

DOnt know about regionals, but our wings and name badges are available wed

A change is good

Hey guys

Sounds like fun! Getting new clothes and accessories is always fun!! (especially when the company pays for them )

The uniform doesn't look that bad - I like it! Hope you all enjoy wearing it.

I wouldn't mind wearing it to work......just have to get the QF job later!

Cheers

I don't go bowling and I don't wear makeup, well, except for this one time, in band camp. I can't seem to figure out what the new 'gay bag' would otherwise be used for. Management just sometimes like to engineer problems for themselves....or so it seems!

Oh kids...

I had my tongue firmly 'in cheek' when I made my first post. Like I said, it's not sooo much the design, more the fabrics (and the 'day bag' issue)...aside from that...quite nice (and I sooooooooo echoe the sentiments of you Skywalker -

DO NOT TALK TO ME about the current shirts...they are TENTS on you and I...but as much as they are tents, at least they tend to hold their shape and present well...even after a Maroochydore service)...

Alpha Charlie Bravo - love your work. Glad to see I'm not the only one to see the 'humourous' side of this bag...Yes Skywalker (Jedi Knight...ooops...Darth moment there...sorry), the general design is good (the strap on the back will be VERY useful I know), but it IS for all intents and purposes A FEMININE bag...

AND that, my friend, is not the look us boys are really after (camp Link Chicks notwithstanding of course... )

Upper Deck Right - are you talking about the same customers that ask you for hand cream, Eucalyptus sachets, tissues, pens, paper, colouring books, the time, pillows, blankets, magazines when you walk past them? The same people who look VERY confused and upset when you have the nerve to reply "Sorry, not on me, but I can get one for you from the galley..." because they expect you to have it ON YOU? I agree with QF's motivation - just not realistic in my view...but it's my view and I'll express if I want to....because it's all about MOI KIMMY!

Oh and apparently us boys don't get serving vest at Regional - Uniforms looked at me like I was a leper when I asked...and the manual that came with it clearly said Short Haul only (cause the Long Haul kids get the serving jacket)...I suppose that IF WE WERE to wear vests, the issue is a moot one...but in absentia, with no vest comes the crushed velvet look I suppose...

I don't take any of this too seriously guys - it's just a uniform, and it's nothing a tailor can't fix

And quite true MarcAir - we could be at United or American and be PAYING for the privilege...

We couldn't carry ALL of it in our pockets - that's where the baggy shirts came in (I could always fit a blanket or two and at least one pillow before my shirt filled up! LOL!)

It never ceases to amaze me how so many pax presume we have so many items in our pockets! "OH, don't you have one on you?" - LOL again!

Love your work Flyblue...us Link Chicks are VERY good babe! Come fly with us one day - sure you'll have a blast on the SUPERJET service from Sydney to Maroochydore!

superjet service! lol

i have tried on my uniform again just then and have decided what i can and cant carry on me:

1 pen (in skirt pocket but makes it hard to sit down)
2 brenclears
1 pr gloves (i always like to keep a pair on me so when someone hands me a spewy sick bag or bleeds in front of me i dont have to run off to find some)
1 handwipe
1/2 tissue.
mini lipgloss in jacket pocket behind pochette thing

and there are no visible bulges either!
dont know how we are going to be able to carry our 'regulatory' 2 pens, where do you put them?

VILE VILE VILE VILE VILE

No where on my docket does it say "No exchange or refund...". Please Morriessy - may I return it to one of your stores!?

Needless to say I am the Link Chick Mr Seatback is referring to.

The uniform is worse in real life than what I ever imagined. Sadly I want to keep my job so I have to wear the blasted thing. Won't even go into the choice of design. Can some it up by simply saying - VILE.

What is with the pants? As stated previously they are cut so high anyone can check me for testicular cancer! The pants are so tight at the front the whole world can see my 'profile'. And the legs. I by no means have coconut crushing thighs but I have ordered a size too big just to allow blood through to my feet! Or are they meant to be leggins?

The jacket. Do you think they could spare the TWO cheap ass plastic buttons? Loved the kangaroo too. Very original. No one would have ever thought of that! Oh the lining - tragic! See you at the RSL soon, Mr Seatback.

Oh and the 'Day Bag'. Who on Earth decided that was cool? I catch the train to Domestic and I don't want to get bashed, thanks. Wheelie Bag for me! Even on day trips.

Yes. The Wheelie Bag. Once I put in my sandels and running shoes (and perhaps some nice heels to go out in when I get to Rockhampton) there is no room left for anything else! Plus there is a big mother kangaroo on it! So if I escape the bashing above I will at least endure some smart @ss comments from Sydney commuters.

Garment Bag. Big mother of a kangaroo on the front but can turn it around to escape any more jeers. Good idea but not ideal for fitting nicely into stowages, lockers and crew transport. Awkward size and shape and a waste of space.

Mock print things do not sit well with many Vegans. Even though they are not real it is still the principal. Did QF consider that? Hell, I am going to proclaim myself Vegan. (I will still have the 1kg steak in ROK though. Is that allowed?)

The positives?
OK there is always a positive. THE OVERCOAT! Yay! Going to be wearing it out real soon. It is very "Meet you out the front of the club in ten." Very "South Yarra coffee shop" - Love it!

Peter Morrissey I have one word to say to you - Vile! Could I do better? No? But I don't pretend to know what I am doing. Nice try. Keep up the work, Tiger.

Overall kids I prefer the 70's (and worn well into the 80's - naughty Qantas!) Pucci number. But then again - I would say that!

Great Galley -
Thanks for carrying all that around in your pocket. It means when I am on the cart with you I don't have to walk all the way to the galley to get a hyperchondriac a Brenclear. Or to use a pen, get gloves etc. Thank you

Skywalker -
What do you mean Seatback will still look pretty?Hmmm? His hair isn't pretty like mine...

Ditz,

I have just managed to pick myself off from the floor. My sides - which split a moment ago - are around here somewhere...

You are just too priceless my friend! "South Yarra coffee shop" - love it!

How's this for bad? One of my melbourne friends sent his new jacket to the drycleaners to have the buttons strengthened (cause he doesn't like sewing them back on)...anyway, drycleaners went to do it when the buttons fell off of their own accord! And he's had the uniform for all of maybe a week (and not worn it once!)

Then again, most airline uniforms have flawed manufacturing - my Air NZ buttons flew off at any given moment (I'm sure that at some point I took someone's eye out with that bloody jacket!) - and it had NOTHING to do with my weight (well, not that time! )

Overall I have to say that I like the uniform. I think its a good professional look. There are a couple of el cheapo components like the plastic buttons (they should have used the silver serving jacket ones) and that bloddy mock crock roo on all the luggage. So much for me trying to commute home incognito in my civvies. That luggage will just give me away. I will have to get nanna to knit me a wheelie bag cover. My suit back handles are broken and I haven't even used it yet. And the day bag....ditzyboy would you like mine? You can fill it with a couple of bricks and use it to defend yourself on the train to work.

The serving jacket looks EXACTLY like the Japanese high school boys uniform that I used to wear when I lived over there. There will be some giggles amongst the pax on the Narita runs. Not sure about the practicality of having to wear the serving jackets all the time... what are they going to look and smell like after a 10 day trip?? EEWWW!!! Might be kinder on the shaving rash as its quite loose fitting on the neck. We'll see.

Nice light fabrics, going to be alot more bearable through Singapore, Bangkok and Cairns. So much for guys winning the battle over the short sleeves. At long haul there wont be a moment where we get to be in them according to the runway guide.

Had a few problems with the fit. As Aretha sings... "how'd ya get those pants so tight?!" How many squats to the bottom part of the meal cart can I do before I do an Eric Bana/Hulk and burst outta me bloomers?? Will be investing in some black undies just in case. Maybe I should start on Kimmies diet of laxettes and ciggies. My jackets didn't fit. I was starting to wonder whether all the cosmic radiation had caused my body to mutate, as my arms stuck out from my jacket sleeves by about 25cm. I later found out that the factory in China had been using the wrong size pattern (smaller) for the jackets.

The runway guide was a cack. I feel so sorry for our female crew.... My god all that makeup!! I didn't think the guide was very realistic - note how they only used fresh young faces.... what about the more mature crew?? I didn't think the guide represented a practical solution for the wide range of shapes, faces and ages in QF. Has anyone actually accomplished the full Windsor knot? I keep running out of tie...over under through the loopand round again etc etc... Ended up with a knot fatter than my kneck. with about 10cm of tie left. Gave up on that one and hope I get away with the good old "four in hand knot".

The shirt fabric I like - i found that if you iron them as soon as you get them out of the spin cycle then they come up really well and don't crease so easily. Don't mind not having the pockets. Found with the old uniform that everything falls out of them while you are cleaning the loo or changing for crew rest anyway. Passengers should learn to bring their own bloody pens!!!

Overall, despite the whingeing tones of my post, I give it the thumbs up. Our current uniform with the big shoulders and those bloody brassy buttons, tent shirts and the fluoro red tie and scarf has to go. It has been a fugitive from the fashion police for too long.

When you think about it, the new uniform is a big project for QF and I think they have done a good job in the time they have had, despite all the teething problems.
