A long way from Europe...

Max Tow 31st Jan 2021 19:44

Fascinating stuff, thanks OUA. I do wonder about the aerodynamic effect (not to mention wind chill) of the chap standing up in the rear cockpit!

Re the new challenge. Is that a perhaps VH prefix on the wing?

siftydog 31st Jan 2021 20:13

Getting very warm Max.

Are we in Queensland, possibly Bundaberg.

Checklist Charlie 1st Feb 2021 00:09

With a Holden Panel Van in the background and the gent in the suit looks very much like Sir Donald Anderson I would say Australia is a good bet.

We are indeed in the lucky country but Queensland it is not.

First clue: the fight originated in Victoria.

Asturias56 1st Feb 2021 15:37

Tasmania? Somewhere like Devonport?

siftydog 1st Feb 2021 18:59

A bigger island than Tasmania...

A second clue now our Antipodean cousins are stirring:

This Ansett ANA ‘Victoria Skycoach’ service operated in Spring 1964 (photo).

Tullamarine?

Most kind, but lacking an opportunity today to trawl through the old strips of the Aussie outback, can I at least assist with the following to boot back to the N.Hemisphere day shift, which I'm hoping will be useful in the context of the second clue:

p.s. As brown dirt and Holdens (sadly no longer) were pretty ubiquitous down here in the DC3 era, if siftydog is feeling really generous, we might get him to tell us in due course which day of the week it was?

I think you'll find Tullamarine only opened in 1970.

Terry Dactil 2nd Feb 2021 04:41

I'll go for a bit of history then: the place where Ansett started in 1936.
Hamilton?

Checklist Charlie 2nd Feb 2021 05:26

The colour of the dirt and the type of scrub says Mallacoota to me.

siftydog 2nd Feb 2021 07:36

Well done Checklist Charlie! Mallacoota it is, photo taken en-route to Merimbula which in Max Tow's well researched schedule was 30 minutes further on. CC has the helm.

Before you send us off across the ditch, your earlier photos tell of happier times.... as you probably know, the Mallacoota area was devastated by the bushfires just over a year ago. The airport was the focus of an evacuation by the RAAF, followed by the RAN from the beach.
You might be interested in the following clip re these brave flyers (the second embedded video works better):
