Good morning, and despite the colour, 'non.'
On reflection, 'no' would be a fairer answer. |
Is or was this some sort of Military base? the houses to the east look very uniform in style?
And "simplest name" - so it has two or more alternatives?? |
Not military as far as I know, and highly unlikely. Probably two names, one somewhat difficult, even for a Welshman.
|
Might it be a compound/village of a mining or oil company? south America? |
Not South America. I operated from a spot where the English name which applies here had been changed to reflect the locale. Getting to that spot was 'such a bad experience,' whereas my passing acquaintance with the field shown was a very long way from my insular starting point, and several days from my insular destination.
The original settlement by outsiders here was probably missionary, and a warning from the mission was ignored at a crucial time. |
So - you were based on an island and returned there
SO is this a continental land mass? |
This is not part of a continental land mass.
I just passed by en-route from one island to another, a journey of 11 days, and mostly completely uneventful. Had a slightly timorous start to the day on which I passed by this spot. |
Please note that I am a dreadful pedant, and a former geography master.
|
A timorous start ? Where you flying out of Timor?
|
Good, that narrows the matter. Actually it was a matter of crossing the Timor Sea after aggressive treatment by the host nation prior to departure that day.
|
Ah - it's Wurrumiyanga on Bathhurst Island N of Darwin
Timor? there's a dump - 400 years of Portuguese non-benign neglect followed by 40 years of Indonesia oppression................... I got there once a about the 3rd time of asking - and regretted it.............. PS I am of course referring to Timor Leste which is actually a very attractive place but not good. I tried to get to Kupang a couple of times in Suharto's time but the flights were always "cancelled", "fully booked" or "very very expensive" - i presume it's an earthly paradise :uhoh: |
There had been enough time for an Antipodean answer ce matin, so, yes, that's it. I operated a couple of years later out of Banjul, a former Bathurst; this trip was Isle of Wight to Tahiti. A nephew did his humanitarian bit in Timor, and a military organisation used machines there which formerly I had graced.

Unable to make out a field from the photographs, but on the coast towards Oman is Riyan, as in RSM. I believe it may be active.
|
Riyan has an airport just to the east of the village/town but it's not there - you are too far north
It's had a number of rulers from all over the shop TBH but these days it is a pretty undeveloped spot. |
