aviate1138 17th Aug 2012 05:06

evansb 17th Aug 2012 15:44

Here is the next mystery aerodrome:

Russell Gulch 17th Aug 2012 22:03

I'd be tempted to say those were PBY's with a sluice ramp at the left of the photo.

Canada?

evansb 17th Aug 2012 22:55

Sorry, not Canada.

aviate1138 18th Aug 2012 05:21

Flew nearby in 1984, I think it's Eagle Mountain Lake in Texas?

evansb 18th Aug 2012 07:35

Yes, aviate1138 is correct.:ok: A former USN and USMC base deep in the heart of Texas. Your turn.

aviate1138 18th Aug 2012 08:44

evansb - thanks :)

Shouldn't be too hard. The guy is pointing at a three ton truck falling out of the sky.....

chevvron 18th Aug 2012 08:51

Massive explosion at an ammo dump 'somewhere in England'. After the Battle have covered it using this picture but I can't remember where , somewhere like Wratting Common?

sabredog 18th Aug 2012 17:15

Metfield Airfield bomb dump explosion.

aviate1138 18th Aug 2012 21:02

sabre dog you are the Main Man. A pal of mine lived at Metfield Hall during the war. He grew up with P-47s, P51s and B-24s just outside his bedroom window! Lucky sod.

You have control.

sabredog 19th Aug 2012 07:02

Many thanks,Aviate1138.
The next challenge;
http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/...3/Quiz1632.jpg

seacue 21st Aug 2012 22:46

This challenge has been idle for more than two days. Perhaps a hint is in order.

chevvron 21st Aug 2012 23:50

How 'bout I start the ball rolling with Worthy Down?
(I was tempted to say Lympne but the reservoir and dwellings are wrong)
(Definitely not Rearsby)

India Four Two 22nd Aug 2012 05:46

Not in the UK? Somewhere in Germany?

sabredog 22nd Aug 2012 06:49

Apologies for not providing some hints/clues earlier than this.
The airfield is no longer extant, but was well known in the 1930s. It is now part of a housing estate and Country Park ,and still retains a link to it's aviation past.
Not Lympne, Rearsby or Worthy Down,Chevvron.
U.K. is correct,Simon.

aviate1138 22nd Aug 2012 11:03

Could it be Woodley by any slim chance?

sabredog 22nd Aug 2012 11:11

It is indeed the old Woodley Airfield, Aviate1138.
YHC

aviate1138 22nd Aug 2012 16:43

thanks sabredog

Don't hurry over this one.........

Tempsford 22nd Aug 2012 17:43

Rush Green?

aviate1138 22nd Aug 2012 19:09

Tempsford! Spot on!

You have control.

Tempsford 22nd Aug 2012 22:42

Sorry folks, just returned, open house at this time!

BEagle 23rd Aug 2012 21:00

Since no-one else has stepped in, I offer you:

TheChitterneFlyer 24th Aug 2012 06:25

Witney Aerodrome (Universal Aircraft Serrvices).

Open House if correct.

TCF

BEagle 24th Aug 2012 07:55

Correct! It is indeed the old Witney aerodrome, now an industrial estate.

An easy one:

aviate1138 24th Aug 2012 09:25

Used to take my kids to Pollensa as the beach was so shallow and ideal for tots.

Pollensa Mallorca?

BEagle 24th Aug 2012 11:41

Si, seņor, it is indeed the old flying boat base at Puerto Pollensa, Mallorca:

I can recall staying at the nearby Hotel Illa D'Or and watching those Do24s chugging about in the late 1960s. If the water was calm, they used to have to charge around the bay to stir it up a little before taking off.

A champagne cocktail in 'Bar Katy' cost 1/- back then! Sadly Katy herself passed away about 40 years later.

You have control....

aviate1138 24th Aug 2012 13:12

Thank you Sir,

Open House

PS Do24 and turbine variants look 'right' don't they?

BEagle 24th Aug 2012 19:43

Yes, the Do24 is very elegant!

My last Open House, then it'll be someone else's turn:

jindabyne 24th Aug 2012 19:45

THAT, is so obvious that I shan't reply!!

TheChitterneFlyer 24th Aug 2012 21:01

If it's THAT obvious... I won't bother guessing! WTF?

sycamore 24th Aug 2012 23:16

Somewhere in Texas...?

aviate1138 25th Aug 2012 06:01

Phoenix AZ I think - Hassayampa Field looking a little worse for wear these days or did around 1996 even

BEagle 25th Aug 2012 06:13

Not Hassayampa Field......

sabredog 25th Aug 2012 06:50

Luke Field Auxiliary Airfield,Arizona,U.S.A.

BEagle 25th Aug 2012 07:27

Of which there were many, including Hassayampa Field.....:hmm:

aviate1138 25th Aug 2012 07:29

No 6 Goodyear Field is the most likely.

BEagle 25th Aug 2012 08:15

It is indeed Luke Aux AF No.6 (Goodyear Field). As, presumably, jindabyne knew...?

An overhead from 2011, showing the ever-encroaching residential areas...

YHC, aviate1138. But you are expected to contribute a challenge of your own this time.

jindabyne 25th Aug 2012 08:30

Of course dear chap!

aviate1138 25th Aug 2012 11:02

Jindabyne's prize. However if BEagle says I HC then so be it.....

evansb 25th Aug 2012 19:59

It looks like one of a dozen boreal forest airstrips in Canada's north. Anything significant about the location?
