Silence is golden.
A clue please sabre. It could be remote, disused, abandoned or just plain third world (am I still allowed to say that?). Google isn't helpful thus far on those counts. Given what looks to be a serviceable flag, I think it may still be 'in use'.

The 'old' airport on Montserrat? (probably not as I can't see any volcanic ash, and in any case it's been done before)

sabredog 2nd Aug 2012 21:57

Neither Montserrat or Nicosia I am afraid.
The terminal building has it's origins in the "Golden Age"of civil aviation, and the airfield (military) is still operational.
It is said that a certain country's day begins here!

SilentHandover 3rd Aug 2012 07:57

Wake Island Airfield?

sabredog 3rd Aug 2012 08:52

Correct,SilentHandover. Wake Island Airfield, Wake Atoll.

nacluv 4th Aug 2012 09:23

I really don't think this is going to be correct, but that photo makes me think of Castle Bromwich.

sabredog 4th Aug 2012 09:49

Thinking along the correct lines, nacluv, but not Castle Bromwich.

spook 5th Aug 2012 22:52

Well they look like bi-planes - the hanger gives scale so my guess is Handley Page before they moved - so Cricklewood?

sabredog 6th Aug 2012 06:44

It is indeed,Spook. Well done.

RAF Culmhead, Devon used by No2 Polish Wing of the Polish airforce during WWII. After WWII used by the Composite Signals Organisation Station which is what the buildings are in the centre of the runways.

BEagle 10th Aug 2012 17:33

10/10! You have control!! Except that 'er be in Zumzett, rather than the land of Devon dumplings. But only just... It's more interesting history includes the fact that it was one of the first aerodromes from which Meteors flew.

I tweaked the photo to give it an appearance of age, but by the time it was taken, Culmhead Radio Station had closed.

Having lived in the south-west, I knew that it was a secret monitoring station, euphemistically termed a 'government radio station'.... So, when I flew Vulcans I used to use that big white building as an IP for low-level bombing runs, knowing that the spies couldn't really complain.....:E

I knew the place as 'Trickey Warren', but it was also known either as RAF Churchstanton or RAF Culmhead.

Whispering Giant 10th Aug 2012 17:48

Yep reconised it straight away, fly over it every day when coming in from the north to land on 26 at EXT.
