Actually it DOES look like Mt Pleasant (and that's as unfortunate a description of any airfield I've ever been to - no mountain and not pleasant) but no - it's a VERY different climate.......... here it is on a sunnier day

Looks a bit `Oman-ish`....
|
Indeed - but it's not - nowhere near as pleasant a spot ...............
the old runway is no longer in use and the new one is (rather oddly I think) almost at right angles to it - it's the new one you see in the first picture |
Jenkins you are thinking of the period of the old Sultan Said - who is recorded as "having taken a close look at the 20th Century he'd decided he wasn't having any of it in HIS country."
These days Oman is indeed a delightful place under the wise rule of Sultan Qaboos- having served in the British Army he has an in-depth knowledge of the West- his view was that it made no sense to "turn the place into Dubai or Ibiza - we'd have to import all the materials, all the labour, all the water and the profits would all go out" and therefore he is in favour of "discerning" (= rich) tourists only. The oil helps as well of course..................... Nice people, superb hotels and none of the issues of Dubai or Abu Dhabi - I strongly recommend it but the airfield is in a People's Democratic Republic - which of course is none of those things.......... |
Ta'izz, Yemen ?
|
Yemen - not as good as Oman but I'd still put it ahead of the place in the picture - try another Continent....................
|
Given massive clues I'm suspecting Pyonyang. OH if right.
|
Nope - not in Asia
|
Tamanrasset, Algeria ?
|
It is indeed - a premier hell-hole even by Saharan standards
One thing for sure - any aircraft that goes AOG thre is really buggered - whereas if it's Nice or Sardinia you have your suspicions....... Kewbick has the con............... |
Thanks for the clues. Ah yes, Tamanrasset, enroute to Timbuktu..
Here is the next challenge: http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/...%20to%20be.jpg |
Time for a clue. Here is the Gate Guardian:
http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/...20feathers.jpg |
In Canada possibly...?Moose Jaw..?
|
Sorry, not in Canada.
|
Just popped in to see where the thread is at.
Davis-Field? OH if correct. Edited to add that I am sure it is correct! How I got there? The T33-A was indeed the clue intended, so thanks for that. Searching for "T33-A gate guardians" led me here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...Shooting_Stars I then worked my way through the page looking for locations that could match the general topography in the airfield image. From here I clicked this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Davis_Field_(Oklahoma) - and bingo, the layout of the airfield matches the challenge. |
Correct. Davis Field (IATA: MKO, ICAO: KMKO, FAA LID: MKO) is an uncontrolled city-owned airport seven miles south of Muskogee, in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, U.S.A.

This airfield is no longer open, but was very important at one time. |
Long shot: think it's Moscow, struggling to find the name for it but I think it's right next to the Spartak metro station......
Khodynka? Yep, it's not Khodynka, struggling to find the name ...... |
You're very close...:)
|
Eureka! Tushino I do believe? :O
|
Correct! A very interesting history it has, too. Joe Stalin used to admire his air force from there. The photo was taken in 1991 from a 125 we were demonstrating. We were following the site of the MKAD, Moscow's equivalent of the M25!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_air_show |
Thks Barry. OH I'm afraid folks.
|
I didn't realize that Tushino had closed.
Try this. I took this picture last year. http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...psigwpymuj.jpg |
"big place canada - and very flet!"
|
Harry,
Not all of it is flat! http://www.caingram.com/Canada/Mount_assiniboine_2w.jpg However, to be fair, this aerodrome is in a mostly flat part of the country. A clue to its location is that there is no scheduled jet service. I was very surprised to see an Airbus on the ramp as we joined the circuit. |
Why is it that in all the films/TV you see they are able to zoom in on a photo and read the words even though they are only one pixel tall in the original.
Doesn't work in the real world. I've tried with the hanger, and the name is still a blue blob :ugh: Guess it says Aviation - no real help then :) |
Sorry about that nvubu. My iPhone 6s has a very impressive camera, but it does have its limits.
However, you can make out the airline's name - does that help? ;) The cloud and the platform in front of the nose are related clues. PS I just looked at my original. I don't think I'm giving anything away to say that the name on the hangar is "Esso Aviation". |
Some sort of roll cloud... = downwind of the Rockies??? = high prairies = an area as big as Europe with the population of the Isle of Wight.................
|
Possibly Lethbridge.
Concrete apron with tarmac edges and the buildings seem to fit. |
HH, I think your tongue must be firmly in your cheek again! The small city adjacent to this airport has almost the population of the IOW.
The cloud is a Cb. What comes out of them and "impacts" :E airworthiness? |
dixi188,
Yes, it's Lethbridge CYQL. We landed there to clear customs while returning from Oshkosh. We had to overnight due to thunderstorms between there and Calgary. The Airbus had been there since the previous day, after it had diverted from Calgary: Air Canada flight to Calgary makes emergency landing in Lethbridge after hail cracks windshield | Calgary Herald You have control PS Sorry for any confusion caused by overlapping posts. There are some spectacular pictures in the Calgary Herald link. |
FYI Lethbridge DOES have a scheduled service - three a day according to this
Lethbridge Airport: Lethbridge Airport But I'd never have got it from the picture ............... |
I followed others leads and started east of the Rockies around Calgary and found Lethbridge first. Just luck really.
Sorry, nothing to post at the moment. I must sort out my boxes of slides. OH. |
FYI Lethbridge DOES have a scheduled service http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...soxoyiq0n.jpeg When the A320 arrived, they had to improvise to get the passengers off: http://wpmedia.calgaryherald.com/201...2&h=226&crop=1 I've discovered that Air Canada wants to charge me $350 for a one-way 30 minute flight! I wonder what the loads are like. |
wet Sunday................. don't give this very long......

Sandown, Isle of Wight?
|
Nope - right continent tho'
|
That picture is quite misleading....................
|

|
