Not RAF Yatesbury.....
|
The original photo shows an outline that is surprisingly similar to Gartree prison on the old Market Harborough airfield, so I searched to see if any other post-war airfields had been so adapted.
Your last post indicates that my search was futile, but it was still fun looking! I still have no clue where your challenge is! Russ |
RAF Watchfield, A420 cuts across it and the hangars have been replaced with a business park
|
Ah, tally-ho, yippety-dip and zing zang spillip!
It is indeed RAF Watchfield! The photo was orientated roughly south, which might have confused you. But look at the shadows...... NavEx, you have the helm! |
Very clever mosaic Beags.
|
Cheers, chevvron!
The colour overlay had to be rotated and resized, using the long side of the depot buildings as a reference dimension, then aligned with the 2 roads before being pasted. Then the whole image was cropped and reset to 800 pixels NavEx, you've got until 1932 this evening, then we'll assume OH! |
I used to throw LandRovers and Trailers at Watchfield.
Sorry for the thread drift. |
NavEx has PM'd that he is down route, so has asked me to provide another challenge. So, here we go:
|
Errrr, Watchfield? :)
|
Bugger - switch pigs at Photobouqet!
Try this: |
Goxhill per chance? oh in unlikely event of my suggestion being correct...
|
It is indeed Goxhill....quite well preserved I would say...It is now quite rare to see outside dispersal areas still intact or so...
|
Definitely Goxhill from the north.
|
Yes, 'Goat Hill' indeed it is!
OH then...... |
This will be my first one...It should not be too difficult this airfield being quite well known...
Note that a better image can be found here: Imageshack - pprune1.jpg I have tried to show a reduced image with a link to the larger one but did not succeed. http://imageshack.us/a/img844/8412/pprune1.jpg Amically to all PPrune members JVM PS: At time of posting it was OH: I just hope I followed the rules...Do not hesitate to let me know just in case... |
Saint Omer?
|
Excellent Spook!
It is indeed Saint Omer/Wizernes, ca Nov 1943...I hope you got to look to the larger picture which is reallybeautiful in detail. The airdrome was fully operational (and stayed that way to the end). Be prepared I have many of those war airfields (that's a pet passion of mine).. You have the helm! |
Apologies All, Short notice trip came up. OH please.
|
Work should not interupt pleasure

Correct sd, OTU

Kalgoorlie, Western Australia?
I should say the old Kalgoorlie, as it doesn't look like this now! The photo is south-up; the entire airfield was moved in the 1970's about a mile to the south. All that remains of the original airfield now is the readiness platform (?) at the southern end of Rwy 35, the terminal area/aeradio buildings (top centre of photo) while the two shiny hangars (left of centre at the top of the photo) are on the hardstanding that was the wartime site of 4AD's four Bellman hangars. The rest is covered in suburbia now... If correct, Open House please... |
Well done,Dora-9. as you say, Kalgoorlie Airfield,W.A.
Dora-9 has declared; Open House |
|
