Asheville (AVL) Airport Terminal,Ashville,North Carolina,U.S.A?

seacue 22nd Jul 2012 10:03

Yes, it is in the USA, but very roughly half a continent west of North Carolina. I can't pick out this old terminal in the present Gxxgle Earth image of this aerodrome.

Edited at 14:50 to add:
This picture was taken from the window of the United Airlines 737 which I rode from KDCA with intermediate stops at KMDW and Kxxx. Through-plane service is no longer available between this airport and KDCA/KIAD/KBWI.

seacue 23rd Jul 2012 10:12

Big Hint:

This airport serves the capital of the state.

Hen Ddraig 23rd Jul 2012 11:32

Could this be PIR Pierre Municipal, South Dakota. Sometimes known as Pierre Regional and due to have its new terminal open on 1 September.

HD

seacue 23rd Jul 2012 11:56

No, it isn't Pierre. You are too far north.

In the early 70s Northwest had a flight which started in Seattle and stopped at Spokane, Bozeman, Billings, Helena, Pierre, Milwaukee and finally on to KDCA ... all in a 727. Took all day (west to east). There were three stops in Montana, but I may have the Montana cities and their order wrong. I was a pax from Montana to KDCA. The Pierre terminal looked pre-WW2 in the 70s.

evansb 23rd Jul 2012 15:37

Lincoln, Nebraska ?

I'll change that to Des Moines, Iowa.

seacue 23rd Jul 2012 16:06

Mr evansb ... you ought to leave it as Lincoln KLNK.

My flight was KDCA. KMDW. KOMA, KLNK. Omaha to Lincoln isn't very far and it seemed that we flew at about the height of the tall TV towers.

I'll credit evansb with the win.

I'll be away from my computer for a number of hours starting now. I was about to declare Open House, but evansb came just in time.

evansb 23rd Jul 2012 17:02

Okay, thanks. Sorry, I have to declare OPEN HOUSE

I'll be back around 2130Z.

evansb 24th Jul 2012 18:27

Here is the next mystery aerodrome:

evansb 24th Jul 2012 19:39

Spot on Terrence:ok: Kenora Water Aerodrome, location identifier CJM9, is an airport of entry, as it is served by Canada Customs Officers. Your turn.

sabredog 24th Jul 2012 19:49

The next challenge;

sycamore 24th Jul 2012 20:50

At a guess, CFE West Raynham;Anson,Hurricane,poss.Chipmunk,Meteor T7 and F8..

sabredog 24th Jul 2012 21:44

Not R.A.F. West Raynham.

chevvron 25th Jul 2012 08:10

Early style 'C' type hangars like that are at Abingdon.

jindabyne 25th Jul 2012 08:15

RAF Binbrook?

sabredog 25th Jul 2012 10:05

Neither R.A.F. Abingdon nor R.A.F.Binbrook.
I believe the hangar to be a Type A, which should provide a good clue.

Kieron Kirk 25th Jul 2012 10:28

Martlesham Heath.

Ciarain.

sabredog 25th Jul 2012 12:07

Correct.
YHC

Kieron Kirk 25th Jul 2012 12:41

sabredog.

Thanks for the nice photograph.

OH anyone ?

Ciarain.

sabredog 25th Jul 2012 13:05

Thank you,Ciarain. The Hawker Hurricane was part of the original BoB Flight which was based at Martlesham Heath. I believe the Anson was a V.I.P. hack, as the nose carried the two star insignia of an A.V.M. But, on the other hand, I could be completely wrong!

Duckbutt 25th Jul 2012 19:18

If it's OH then here's another:

Duckbutt 25th Jul 2012 19:31

This is becoming pointless. Carry on.

sabredog 25th Jul 2012 19:33

Thank you,Duckbutt,
P.M.for you shortly.
Challenge withdrawn, due to link and copyright.
Open House.

Tacklebury 26th Jul 2012 07:51

SD, I think the airport in your withdrawn challenge is Gustavo Rizo ,Baracoa,Cuba.
It was,then Open House.

sabredog 26th Jul 2012 07:57

Correct,Tacklebury.
Apologies for the withdrawal of the photograph. As someone once said; "Should have gone to SpecSavers!".
Taks has declared;

Noyade 27th Jul 2012 10:03

Soviet Union mate.

According to the article, the photos were taken by participants at an international balloon meeting in nearby Leningrad in May 1990. Must be a large place. Here's a shot of the eastern side of the airfield...

Noyade 27th Jul 2012 10:26

If the Olympics kill interest in these ID threads, I'm happy to reveal and declare open house - just say the word. :)

(Where is the beach volleyball being held? Women's beach volleyball has got to be the best Olympic event ever. :ok:)

chevvron 27th Jul 2012 10:56

Horse Guards Parade (not the airfield, the beach volleyball (yawn) been to Rio and seen the real thing)

Airclues 27th Jul 2012 12:04

Gorelovo?

OH if correct.

Dave

Noyade 27th Jul 2012 21:40

sabredog 30th Jul 2012 15:29

Hawkesbury East Airfield,Ontario,Canada.

jindabyne 31st Jul 2012 08:20

Correct sabre - over to you.
