Far East correct.

Not fake buildings. Airfield is as seen - to the east.

Well done Jenkins, Tachikawa it is - I thought that would be much harder, and I had such a good image lined up next with three airfields on it - two still existing, one long gone.

Seen somewhere very similar previously. Ex RAF base with modern base just south of it - can't remember the name/location, Maybe Egypt - Red Sea in the top right of the image.

I've now remembered the airfield I was thinking of is RAF Fayid - which this one obviously isn't.:ok:

Ras al Hadd, Oman?

The history of Ras al Hadd seems to be quite well hidden. I knew the area when I did a tour in the Gulf decades back, 1969-70, and visited Masirah occasionally from my base at Muharraq. I also understand it was built by the US, but why? Did they have any military involvement in the area in WW2? Or did they build it for UK use? It's listed by Wikipedia, but with no information.

My next offering, should last all of a few minutes:

Is this the one which once had a right engine fire on start-up due to overpriming ?

dook 8th Oct 2018 11:15

Lands End ?

kenparry 8th Oct 2018 11:29

dook,

I can't answer your first question, but the answer to your second is: yes. Date, for info, August 1974.

You have control.

dook 8th Oct 2018 11:47

Rapide G-AYIR:

The aircraft was being prepared for flight, with the commander and seven passengers on board. The left engine was started first, followed, after priming, by the right engine. Immediately after the right engine started the pilot saw a flame, which appeared to originate from the outboard section of its engine cowling. Believing the right wing to have caught fire, he shut down both engines. The pilot then assisted with passenger evacuation, which had been initiated by the ground crew when the fire broke out. Ground crew also tackled the fire, with hand held appliances, and had extinguished the fire when the aerodrome fire service arrived on scene.
Standby please.

Hard runways partly dug up and now a gliding site (I'm told one of the runways was never finished anyway).
Pocklington (Yorks)

Interesting airfield; my source says it was originally built with a runway 01/19 and a runway 17/35 ie within 20 deg of each other but another source says construction on one runway (doesn't say which one but I assume it was 17/35) was abandoned because it would have meant heavily loaded Halifaxes climbing out over a built up area.
Looks like there could have been another runway about 07/25 originally too.

nvubu 9th Oct 2018 12:36

Not in the UK.
