My thoughts have turned to Scandinavia.

(d- pm/ r'cvd, r'tnd)

dook 17th Jul 2019 18:41

Or Denmark.

PM R/X.

Asturias56 17th Jul 2019 21:06

Not Scandinavia, nor Denmark.............. not much happens here

Auxtank 17th Jul 2019 21:32

Umm, not much happens here and it's misty...

The Urals...?

TINYPIC.COM
dook has messaged me regarding the fact that tinypic.com is closing down. When it does, any image linked to there will no longer be visible - go back to the original Aerodrome thread top see how it looks when the image is no longer available.

If you use this website to host images you will need to download all your images from that site down to your computer. If you want the images that you have used to be visible on this (or other sites), you will need to upload them to another site. I use Microsoft OneDrive as this is under my control and all the images are on my PC as well as in the cloud. One downside is that I have to use the Source button to manually insert the images into a post.

Once the images are back up in the cloud, you will then have to go through your posts and replace the tinypic images with the ones from your new location. This is long winded and a pain - I know I've had to do this once before for my images.

dook - you did say you are retired and with time on your hands :ok:

dook 18th Jul 2019 07:47

I am going to try to retrieve all mine.

I have now established how to upload directly to PPRuNe via a test post yesterday and it works.

The problem is going to be getting into tinypic to retrieve my portfolio.

Asturias56 18th Jul 2019 08:34

Dook - right country , wrong area

It's been around as a place for several hundred years but as far as I can see nothing ever happened there and no-one famous, came, went or stayed...................

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....10b383c5a4.jpg

dook 18th Jul 2019 08:41

But the only country I have suggested is Denmark but you have said no.

Do you mean Auxtank ?

Asturias56 18th Jul 2019 08:51

Sorry - AUXTANK is correct - in Russia but not Urals..............

A complete red herring but from my trips to Russia and the FSU an awful lot of it suffers from an awful lot of fog - especially in winter................

PS re TINY PIC - wasn't there a problem on here a while ago when some other picture posting site changed their tT&C? I've come across references n old post .. and of course Google Earth wiped a whole load of pictures a while back as well

That's why our outfit doesn't trust Cloud based storage for anything other than very short term items :suspect:

Auxtank 18th Jul 2019 08:54

Has it been written about - in a novel or folklore, etc?

Asturias56 18th Jul 2019 09:00

Not that I can find - the locals have hunted, cut wood and fished for several hundred years without any seeming notice from the outside world at all

It appears to be listed (with another 100,000 small places ) in that great summer holiday read (recommended by Ophra) "All Union Population Census of 1989: Present Population of Union and Autonomous Republics, Autonomous Oblasts and Okrugs, Krais, Oblasts, Districts, Urban Settlements, and Villages Serving as District Administrative Centers"

It has a regular (but sparse) travel connection by air to the nearest significant town

Asturias56 18th Jul 2019 09:06

It appears in TripAdvisor!! There is a hotel , a guest house and some cottages if you are looking to stay over, a local museum and some traditional buildings to see ... several thousands souls live there and appear to be quite content

The Hotel is a bit rough according to the (very few) reviews......... sounds like a few I've stayed in in the sticks

dook 18th Jul 2019 09:07

Are we near the Mongolia border ?

Auxtank 18th Jul 2019 09:12

I have a copy by my bedside. I'll scan through it now.

dook 18th Jul 2019 09:20

Remote.

Are the people there known as Samoyed ?

dook 18th Jul 2019 09:24

Mys-Kamenny ?

Starting to get there - a bit too far east I think

Auxtank 18th Jul 2019 10:00

Talagi - Archangelsk ?

dook 18th Jul 2019 10:01

It might be in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug region.

Aerodromo de Karatayka ?

Auxtank 18th Jul 2019 10:17

It might be

Amderma ?

dook 18th Jul 2019 10:40

Leshukonskoye ?

Auxtank 18th Jul 2019 11:05

I'm not saying I'm giving up...
I'm saying that I'm taking a break from googling "remote russian airfields" and getting image pages and pages of broken/ bent and burned-out aircraft.
It's a little depressing.

dook 18th Jul 2019 11:13

….and I'm doing close-up guided tours on Google Earth.

dook 18th Jul 2019 11:41

The tower at Mezen looks very similar.

sycamore 18th Jul 2019 11:48

Mezen..65.52N 44.13E photo shows similar building...OH if correct..

missed dook`s post...

Auxtank 18th Jul 2019 12:11

Reckon you've nailed it there dook. Good shot.

What made things difficult for me earlier was GE not behaving itself so I couldn't zoom in close enough to see airfield buildings.
(A poor craftsman blames his tools...)

Good challenge Asturias.

Asturias56 18th Jul 2019 13:49

Mezen it is Gentlemen -

it has a very interesting Control Tower.......

OH it is................

dook 18th Jul 2019 14:12

But I didn't call OH !

Asturias56 18th Jul 2019 14:19

Apologies - you're right - it was Sycamore jumping the gun :uhoh: or Sycamore and Dook can fight to the death for who got it......................

I think Dook has control - and deserves it - there are a lot of ghastly little fields in N Russia.............. you can go mad looking at GE (see Maryland above)

dook 18th Jul 2019 14:36

Sycamore did not jump the gun.

He posted and then realised I already had.

Auxtank 18th Jul 2019 15:04

Interesting article here: https://www.rbth.com/travel/328195-r...ooden-airports
on Russia's wooden airports. Asturias' beastly Mezen is featured.

Asturias56 18th Jul 2019 18:03

yes - really interesting - you'd have got the nice sunny blue picture earlier but I was googling (unsuccessfully) useful things about Mezen to use as clues and came across it

I knew the Google Wizards here would get it in a flash - hence the fog shrouded picture

Never went - a colleague did go in the early '00's looking to see if you could use it the harbour to land large pieces of kit .... no - but he did mention the Tower to me . I was working more around Murmansk & Archangel................

dook 18th Jul 2019 18:08

So to whom are you giving control ?

Auxtank 18th Jul 2019 18:44

An interesting part of the world definitely.

Come on dook - your go!

dook 18th Jul 2019 19:01

OK - I wasn't sure from what Asturias said.

dook 18th Jul 2019 19:05

Tinypic update.

The site says that I have no images or albums, so it looks like that's the end of it.

The challenge above has been directly uploaded to this thread courtesy the PPRuNe uploading facility.

Auxtank 18th Jul 2019 19:09

Asters can be vague on the win. He must have "nipped out" for a jar/ dinner/ job (which he won't be happy about, etc)/ a multitude of reasons.

That looks like thoroughly inhospitable terrain.

Oz ?

dook 18th Jul 2019 19:12

Blimey - what a good tee shot !

A yes to Oz.

Dora-9 18th Jul 2019 19:22

Easy! The very distinctive Woodstock (south of Townsville).

OH if correct....
