dook 20th Jul 2019 12:55

It is indeed mainland France.

It was exclusively military. Disused since 1998.

It is away from the Atlantic coast and the Channel.

dook 20th Jul 2019 13:32

Google Earth image.

Look closely at the top loop.

sycamore 20th Jul 2019 15:56

Best to avoid that place.....
Broyes-les-Pesmes.....OH if correct

dook 20th Jul 2019 16:01

Great shooting sycamore.

S has called OH sadly.

Asturias56 20th Jul 2019 16:06

Interestingly the radar is blotted out on GE 2018 imagery... god knows why as it 's available on earlier versions

dook 20th Jul 2019 16:12

I don't know either.

My close-up was not taken from the present GE.

My next clue was going to be 143.050MHz which would have got it

JENKINS 20th Jul 2019 17:43

To cover the Sycamore hole, try this where the local village has long had a significant tree. A prominent WW2 defence line passed thereby.

Auxtank 20th Jul 2019 17:43

Why the HUGE hammerheads at each end?

What da' hell did they have landing and departing there?

(ref: dook's previous challenge)

Asturias56 20th Jul 2019 17:52

Mirage III and Mirage 2000 I think - 2e Esc de Chasse according to the French sites....................

"The air base was built in 1959 as a NATO dispersed air base. After NATO's withdrawal from France in 1967, it continued to serve as a backup base for the largest French air base, Base Ačrienne 102 at Dijon." from Forgotten Airfields

That makes sense Asters - cheers. See it ceased ops in 2005 but no doubt el Radar continues its quiet purpose. As sycamore says; visitors distinctly not "Bienvenue."

Asturias56 20th Jul 2019 17:55

Jenkins - is that the GHQ defence line we're looking at?

*

Think (as per Dook) it was actually closed in 1998 for air ops - it took the Army several years to get the radar up and running

JENKINS 20th Jul 2019 18:08

GHQ Defence Line it is, but which colour?

Auxtank 20th Jul 2019 18:11

I wonder...

Green ?

(A word, that after a couple of glasses ceases to make sense to the eye; like the word banana)

Auxtank 20th Jul 2019 18:29

RAF Ramsbury.

On the R. Kennet
Approx 2 miles East of Axford.

On the Blue Line.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_Ramsbury

Always a bit depressing to see an interesting historic site given over to agriculture - but it could be worse I suppose. Could be covered in housing.

OH if all correct and present Jenkers.

JENKINS 20th Jul 2019 19:37

Yes, Ramsbury, with Mildenhall a couple of miles, left that is, to the West.

Auxtank 20th Jul 2019 21:29

On this particular night let's raise a glass to these fellows.

Maximum points if you can ID the Runway.
But let's give Eagle best on nailing it.

Open House. Open Universe.

It amazes me that many people still think it was all faked.

A recent analysis of moon rock samples reveals that they could not possibly have come from Earth.

Self loading bear 21st Jul 2019 08:55

Dook, it was all fake!
It shows that Fake news doesn’t Trump up lately.
This photo gives definite prove that the landingzone was on Teterboro runway 06/24!!

Open universe if proven to be correct.

dook 21st Jul 2019 09:21

….and there was I thinking it was Half Moon Bay !

Yet another GE view !

Auxtank 21st Jul 2019 10:11

Typhoons on the apron?

Self loading bear 21st Jul 2019 10:21

I agree this challenge deserves better.

Auxtank 21st Jul 2019 10:34

Sorry - is this a new challenge or the same airfield only with a non-GE pic, SLB?

Both Hawker and BAE highly unlikely

Self loading bear 21st Jul 2019 10:37

Same airfield

dook 21st Jul 2019 10:39

Looking at the aeroplanes and the trilby hat I would guess USA.

dook 21st Jul 2019 10:41

Purdue Airport maybe.

Self loading bear 21st Jul 2019 12:47

Dook scores again
Purdue University Airport
Where Neil Armstrong studied.
(Wapakoneta would have been to easy, but i didn’t get to the second clue anyway)

India Four Two 21st Jul 2019 14:09

Clearly not Port Stanley! ;)

dook 21st Jul 2019 14:26

A stick of 1000 pounders at fifteen or so degrees to the runway would never have cut it !

We could have laid down several retards from 200 feet straight down the runway but didn't have anywhere from where to operate.

sycamore 21st Jul 2019 14:42

Must have been deliberately `scuttled` to prevent further use....
Egypt,Libya, Iraq,or somewhere else...?

dook 21st Jul 2019 14:45

Keep going on that idea......:)

nvubu 21st Jul 2019 17:37

Looks German to me

dook 21st Jul 2019 17:41

You like these don't you.

German yes, but not Germany.

dook 21st Jul 2019 18:06

It is still just visible on GE.
