dook 22nd Apr 2019 09:41

Go ye north young man.

JENKINS 22nd Apr 2019 09:54

As far North as Vasteras?

Dora-9 22nd Apr 2019 09:59

Gotta be a Firefly with wings that fold like that
Well spotted Ted - I didn't even see the Firefly there! Just the Meta Sokol in the centre of the frame...

dook 22nd Apr 2019 10:04

As far north as Vasteras is just far enough.

Lights - music - enter stage left please. :ok:

JENKINS 22nd Apr 2019 12:05

Exit, pursued by a bear! The Winters Tale, a stage direction. Thanks, very interesting. Have a shufti at the tales of such aircraft in Eire.

Now this on a gorgeous UK weekend when in my youth I would earn my pocket money for the week by judicious use of the various aircraft which I flew Mon to Fri in my military job. Be on your guard with what appears here however.

dook 22nd Apr 2019 12:27

"guard" seems to be a cryptic hint.

A restricted airfield in Europe maybe.

JENKINS 22nd Apr 2019 12:46

Yes, cryptic. Not restricted, not Europe.

dook 22nd Apr 2019 12:57

Anything to do with the Air National Guard USA ?

JENKINS 22nd Apr 2019 13:18

No, an origin long before ANG.

dook 22nd Apr 2019 13:30

Cobber country ?

JENKINS 22nd Apr 2019 13:33

The same, and still there.

JENKINS 22nd Apr 2019 14:13

Out for an hour, dangle my feet in the Brook.

dook 22nd Apr 2019 15:38

Somewhere in Victoria ?

JENKINS 22nd Apr 2019 15:41

According to my excellent road map of the Four X continent, yes.

dook 22nd Apr 2019 16:15

You said it's still there but is it now disused ?

JENKINS 22nd Apr 2019 16:19

Apparently still in use.

dook 22nd Apr 2019 16:47

I've been through a site listing twenty airports in Victoria and it's not there.

Must be somewhat obscure methinks.

JENKINS 22nd Apr 2019 17:14

It is on the list which I noted.

Self loading bear 22nd Apr 2019 18:05

It is on nr 32 of the list?
a bit chilly around the back?

dook 22nd Apr 2019 18:36

I've just been through a list of 41 and throwing each one into GE.

Still nothing so it's time to call it a day.

Dora-9 22nd Apr 2019 19:11

Coldstream, Victoria?

The clue was a bit cryptic for me (I can't do the crosswords either), but finally the light dawned.

OH if correct.

JENKINS 22nd Apr 2019 19:25

Yes, Coldstream, so be on your guard. And, of course, my toes in the local brook which remains, in April, a cold stream. All very silly, sorry. No. 11 on my list, Slb

OH called..

Self loading bear 22nd Apr 2019 19:48

No problem Jenkins
all depending on the list of course

Airports in Victoria, Australia @ OurAirports

dook 22nd Apr 2019 21:10

No cryptic clues.

Duchess_Driver 23rd Apr 2019 06:26

Kingman, Az.?

dook 23rd Apr 2019 07:58

We are in Europe.

kenparry 23rd Apr 2019 10:43

Unusual parking. USAAF, 8th AF; Eastern England, perhaps after the end of hostilities?

dook 23rd Apr 2019 10:49

They are indeed American aircraft but the photograph is from 1943.

You have the correct country now.

kenparry 23rd Apr 2019 11:11

Perhaps a reception field rather than an operational base. Burtonwood?

dook 23rd Apr 2019 11:25

Not a reception field and it's SE England.

edit: I am sure the aircraft are Marauders and at the time it was an operational base.

Further clues as required.

nvubu 23rd Apr 2019 12:27

How about RAF Stansted Mountfitchet

sycamore 23rd Apr 2019 12:47

Earles Colne perhaps...?

dook 23rd Apr 2019 13:06

nvubu scores a direct hit with Stansted. Photo from 1943.

You have control nv.

nvubu 23rd Apr 2019 13:40

Thanks dook, Wasn't sure if Essex is SE, but couldn't find a match in Kent, Sussex or Surrey. Was looking for the kink in the perimeter track.

Here's the next challenge

dook 23rd Apr 2019 13:42

Knowing you, this might be another Vietnam job.

nvubu 23rd Apr 2019 14:40

Nope not Vietnam this time around.

dook 23rd Apr 2019 14:43

Maybe western Pacific then.

Looks like a Seabees or Australian construction jobber.

nvubu 23rd Apr 2019 15:12

Yes to the western Pacific

I don't know the answer as to who constructed the airfield - I don't think it was the Japanese..

However, Wikipedia states it was the Americans.

dook 23rd Apr 2019 15:21

Solomans ?

nvubu 23rd Apr 2019 15:37

This airfield isn't on one of the Solomon Islands.
