Very good, yes, and lots of guano there I believe. However, not Australia, though several of my colleagues back then in 1975 were Australian, dare I say mercenaries, although 'contract' is more respectable.
Australian 'contract' pilots. How about PNG?
Not PNG, though doubtless some of my chums will have spent Caribou time there. This island a bit smaller.
How about moving southeast? The Solomon Islands? |
I have flown in that area, but my island a very long way West of The Solomons.
And in a different hemisphere, where it is bed-time.
Looked Middle Eastern to me so started around that area.
Difficult to find as there was no marker indicating an airfield/airstrip at that location. Could not find a name as you mention but think this is the small strip at the extreme western end of Al Hallaniyah Island off the Dhofar coast of southern Oman. OH if correct. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....4df12d98d6.jpg |

Good morning, and it is indeed that settlement in Oman, it being the largest inhabited settlement, apparently, on the Kuria Muria Islands. Failed telegraph station in Victorian times when a better line was established close to Khasab at the very North of Oman.
OH called. |
I'll start then.
Almost nothing to go on, but I'm looking at the hangars and what might be the fin of a Spad. Are we in France ? |
Other side of the pond. Photo date 1925. The caption includes "National Guard hangars in foreground; air race hangars in distance". Today it's a 4-runway airport.
Maybe Lambert Field, St Louis.
Yessir! Photo taken from the book "Spirit of St Louis", Lindbergh's account of his famous 1927 flight.
Over-informed guesswork leads me to Matilda Bay, WA
Unfortunately not Washington.
Delightful spot close to Darwin, Doctor's Gully?

I now understand AG.
And to both of you - we're not in Australia. |
Perhaps Koggala, Ceylon (as we called it then!)?
Ah - a member of the old school. I still think of Bombay.
However, we are a long way from there. |
It is now my bedtime so I'll leave you all with fact that the closest so far is Darwin.
Possibly the seaplane base near Luganville on Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides, now known as Vanuatu.
OH again if correct. |
lauriebe scores a direct hit with Luganville. and has called OH.
That looks like the NDB transmitter at Bournemouth.
Not by the seaside, but it is in the UK.
Municipal/small airfield ?
No - International one. Here's a zoomed-out view

Lorraine Chase's favourite ?
Certainly is - Luton Airport. Funnily enough couple of chaps at work who live in Dunstable and Harpenden haven't heard of Lorraine - but they are only 30.
I was visiting Someries Castle on the way home from shopping in Luton, couldn't resist the opportunity. Over to you. |
Haven't heard of Lorraine !!!?
Lovely girl. Had dinner with her once. O me yoof. Standby please. |
USA? West coast? I had never heard of Lorraine and looked up the ad. Very funny but I read that it was not an effective ad. |
USA West coast yes.
Lorraine was naturally funny off camera and I enjoyed the evening with her. |
Lucky find, i recognized the stairs when scrolling through “1950 airport terminals” https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....2d1b6c006.jpeg Tucson international Arizona SLB |
Good shooting SLB.
Your thread. |
Thanks,
