PaperTiger is correct:ok: Well done.:D Located 7 miles south of Arcadia, Florida, Carlstrom Field was named after British pilot Victor Carlstrom, who was killed in an aircraft crash in Newport News VA in 1917. John Paul Riddle of the famous Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, learned to fly at Carlstrom during WW.I. In 1941 he was awarded a contract to train Army cadets, so at a cost of $1 million USD, he developed Carlstrom into a 1,300 acre complex, complete with a 1000 foot circle of paved road in order to help cadets move quickly from one classroom to the next. For recreation, the cadets enjoyed a swimming pool, tennis courts and a baseball diamond. The base also trained cadets from Great Britain. 23 British pilots died while there and the city of Arcadia dedicated a special area in the city cemetery in their honor, where they are laid to rest.
The airfield was abandoned after WW.II. The property is now the site of a state mental hospital. |
Oh what the heck,
Just in case it is Horta (that's where I kicked off my honeymoon so I'm fairly confident). http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d4...K/airport1.jpg |
SSK's Challenge
Liege (EBLG), Belgium.
If I am right the floor is open. |
Defianetly Liege, the orange aircraft giv it away for a start - TNT's base. And BAMRA's is Horta. the image is on the Wikipaedia entry for Horta!
Continuing the theme, I'm taking up KMG's offer of open house. http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b.../hydrangia.jpg This won't take long, and don't try to google the image! |
My previous post: yes, Horta/Faial
Dan's latest (no googling on my part): Looks like Lajes Field, Terceira (of Air Transat fame) viewed from the military side? If I'm right, open house as I've no new images yet. |
Correct. It is Lajes, on Terciera Island. Well known destination of gliding A330s and also a Space Shuttle emergency landing strip. And indeed from the military side. Taken from the commisary car park IIRC, where we were picking up some beer. Perhaps we bought a bit too much as the van's suspension will attest!
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...oomuchbeer.jpg You can't google it as it's one of my pictures. Two RAF Victors and a Hercules sit on the ramp, we were conducting a fighter deployment to the US at the time. There can't be any Azorean airfields left! Open House. |
Surely the van is only like that because you were sitting in the back, Dan?
I hope that 'Ten percent Carlos' fixed you up with some decent accommodation! |
I think the floor is open. Assuming it is, let me post a hard one. Hints will provided in due time.

Gentlemen, we must run a civil forum, so please abide by the rules.
Reference seacue's post, is the aerodrome located in the United States? |
College Park,Maryland?...open house if correct!
|
Dear Max Tow, you may be correct, but there are way,.. way too many 'hit and run' types in this forum. The rules stipulate when you correctly identify an aerodrome/cockpit, it is incumbent upon the winner to post a challenge photo, unless unusual circumstances prohibit.
|
Max Tow got it
. Yes, it is KCGS, College Park, Maryland, which claims to be the oldest airport in continuous use. It opened in 1909 and the Army based its first Wright machine there. The challenge photos were taken in 1911/1912. Lt (later Gen) H.H.Arnold was a flying instructor at the Army flight school at the airport in the very early days. Max Tow has declared the floor open, but participants should take evansb's comments to heart. Please be ready to post a challenge if you win the current challenge. Also, things get very confusing when there are multiple simultaneous challenges. Please be ready to post when a winner, but don't post a new challenge while one is still running. Evansb originally suggested that an aerodrome thread like this would be of interest. |
Apologies, as a latecomer I looked on page 1 for rules and didn't see any. I assume they're somewhere in the correspondence...
|
"Which Aerodrome?" is an off-shoot of "What cockpit?", a thread that has just celebrated two years of continual operation on PPRunNe. Formulated on the premise of evoking aviation HISTORY AND NOSTALGIA, a participant who correctly identifies a photo should be prepared to post a challenge photo. Original black-and-white photos are ideal, older colour photos are welcome. If the photo is recent, an explanation or justification upon identification would be nice, but not necessary. I do not wish to stifle input to this forum, but a certain level of decorum is required. If you've got a beauty new photo, go ahead and post! Just be prepared to justify it on a "History and nostalgia" thread.
Cheers mates!:ok: Moderator note: The 'rules' are now posted in post number 1 of this thread. |
Since the floor seems to be open here is one that is a) black & white. b) historical.
http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~jode.../Image0005.jpg It is in the UK. |
And don't worry about BEagle's 'uncivility' to me. We've known each other for years - it's banter!
I know I posted a colour photo, but at least the aircraft were historic. And BEagle. It was the beer - I was behind the camera. Don't forget it was a V bomber crew. Not some namby pamby ex airliner outfit! |
I like the photograph. Is it Bournemouth, perhaps?
|
Not Bournemouth but it is in the South.
|
Flap40's challenge
Eastleigh perhaps?
|
Yes it is Eastliegh in 1946.
