Dresden, former GDR?

Moira 14th Apr 2008 11:21

That was quick, dash7fan!
Dresden it is, around 1956, during the construction of a new terminal.

dash7fan 14th Apr 2008 15:00

Thanks Moira!, It is still visible on Google Earth, only a IL 14 is now at the other side of the building.

Now an easy one:

The airfield is longer operational and was once associated with a famous aviatrix.

old,not bold 14th Apr 2008 18:35

OK, I'll bite on the clue....Lae, Papua New Guinea?

It's a wild guess, really.

And not much like what looks like a disused airfield in the centre of the town!

sabredog 14th Apr 2008 18:55

Not Lae,old, not bold, and not Miss. Amelia Earhart.
The lady in question was number eleven in the world ranking of lady aviators.

twochai 15th Apr 2008 11:30

There was a small airport close to downtown in Jakarta, long since closed and the name of which I cannot remember.

Would this airfield be in Indonesia, by chance??

sabredog 15th Apr 2008 15:35

Sorry, twochai, not the airfield you allude to. It's postion is west of the Greenwich Meridian and north of Latitude 15 Degrees North.
It was once home to a number of NB2 Islanders.

Speedpig 15th Apr 2008 16:07

St Croix USVI?

Although St Croix does still have an airport.

sabredog 15th Apr 2008 16:32

Sorry,Speedpig, it is not St. Croix.

Speedpig 15th Apr 2008 18:18

Has this airfield been replaced by another in the same vicinity?

Belize?

sabredog 15th Apr 2008 20:01

No,Speedpig,it is not Belize.
There is a modern airport located to the east, and the subject airfield is still partially visible on google, hangers and runway markings for the western end of the runway etc. It would appear that Miss. Amelia Earhart and her navigator, Mr. Fred Noonan, night stopped here with the aviatrix mentioned in the earlier posts, whilst they were on their ill fated flight in 1937.

PaperTiger 15th Apr 2008 20:54

You've been peeking at Mr. Freeman's excellent website again, I see :)
