Looks ex military? transport?

One of the 'avons - Upavon or Netheravon????

chevvron 14th Jan 2008 09:09

Hullavington?

Flap40 14th Jan 2008 09:42

I think that both of the 'avons are grass fields. It's not Hullavington either.

621andy 14th Jan 2008 10:10

Got it! ...Jurby:)

Flap40 14th Jan 2008 10:49

Correct! The floor is yours.

621andy 14th Jan 2008 16:06

OK thanks!

Here's the next one...a clue - home airfield of a record breaker:

In fact home of two record breakers now I think about it....;)

mustpost 14th Jan 2008 18:55

Early Elvington?

G-ARZG 14th Jan 2008 18:56

Friedrichshafen?

621andy 14th Jan 2008 22:32

Not Elvington or Friedrichshafen...

the incivil beast 15th Jan 2008 07:54

The landscape looks continental, probably even French, but I cannot find the place. There aren't that many airports with a long concrete runway and glider winch launching.

Maybe it is Germany after all.

Some clue would be welcome (maybe the record category)

aviate1138 15th Jan 2008 09:08

Oberpfaffenhofen?

mustpost 15th Jan 2008 10:09

Is it Lubeck?
Or Lübeck-Blankensee to be precise?

621andy 15th Jan 2008 10:29

Mustpost gets it. Lübeck it is!:)

As to the records, well, Hans-Werner Grosse flew 1460km to Biarritz from here in an ASW12, on the 25.4.72. This distance was only recently beaten, I think in wave in south America. Still the longest thermal flight ever.

The second record is his ETA glider which is based there. It has the largest wingspan of any glider of 30.9m and a glide angle of 1:70:ooh:

mustpost 15th Jan 2008 10:47

Thanks 621andy. The gliding record did it - I remember when he set it. This should not take too long - apologies if it's gone before, but I'm at work.
Like the 'first flight out of Heathrow' thread, this is the airport I first flew in to - in a DC3...:O

mustpost's challenge

Tiree Airport.

Fishtailed 15th Jan 2008 12:24

Is it the 'other side' of Ronaldsway?

mustpost 15th Jan 2008 13:01

Hmmm..too easy by far – Tiree it is, and MReyn24050 has it. :D Flew there as a lad on hol in 1960 in a DC-3 – two days later Grandad seriously ill so flew home in DH Heron. Short hol, but I think I preferred the Dak…:}

Next Challenge

Thanks mustpost. It was the Piper PA-28 aircraft belonging to British Airway's Flying Club that gave it away. Incidently the nearest aircraft on the left side of the photograph is G-ODAK a PA-28.236 Dakota :).
Here is the next challenge, which I am sure will not last long.
