Bri,
I had wondered about Norman Wells, but I don't think PWA would have been classified as a "major operator" at that airport.

twochai,
How about Inuvik? Although in this case, the terrain looks too far away.

twochai 5th May 2008 19:39

Brian is right on, it is Norman Wells.

Unless my memory cells are fading, PW was operating DC-6's, later 737-200 combis equipped with gravel kits, on the sched from Edmonton up the Mackenzie valley route to Inuvik during this period. CP did the Edmonton-Fort St John-Whitehorse-Mayo services with DC-6's and DC-3's.

By the way, as some will know already, the fate of the Calgary Air Museum's Mosquito (CF-HMS, mate to this aircraft CH-HMQ) is the subject of serious debate at the moment. Apparently they have tentatively agreed to sell the components in the US for something in excess of $1 million.

Hopefully the citizens of Calgary will recognize the contribution the Mossie made to Canada (1,000+ built by DHC, flown by thousands of Canadians with distinction in WWII). Of course, the mapping of the Arctic laid the foundation for the Calgary oil industry's current focus on the arctic islands and new sources of oil.

Over to you EvansB!

Royal Cambodian Air Force. With a tower as tall and substantial as that one, must be Phnom Penh?

evansb 5th May 2008 20:59

Yes, it is Pochentong Airport, Phnom Penh. :ok: You have control.

twochai 5th May 2008 21:06

I've had more control than is healthy this week, its time for others:

OPEN HOUSE!

(actually RAF Staverton when the photo was taken I think)

chevvron 6th May 2008 05:47

Aldermaston?

Warmtoast 6th May 2008 08:35

Neither Gloucester Staverton or Aldermaston

Arfur Feck-Sake 6th May 2008 16:58

RAF Grantham/Spitalgate?

Warmtoast 6th May 2008 17:08

Not RAF Grantham/Spitalgate

Here's a clue.

The airfield is in the UK and the two aircraft to the left of the runway are USAF C-47s

LFT 6th May 2008 17:13

Culdrose possibly?

Tiger_mate 6th May 2008 17:17

Burtonwood?

Warmtoast 6th May 2008 18:21

Not Culdrose and not Burtonwood

KeMac 6th May 2008 19:31

Bassingbourn

Tiger_mate 6th May 2008 20:28

Molesworth had resident C47, could it be?

Warmtoast 6th May 2008 22:36

Sorry - Neither Bassingbourn or Molesworth

Final clue

If you knew this airfield you'd (possibly) associate it with something you would do with a horse
