The church in the background reminds me of Greek architecture; hmm jumping the gun; Navarone? (says he tongue in cheek)

REF 22nd Jan 2008 17:03

Sorry, been at work today - Crystal River is correct!

621andy 22nd Jan 2008 21:34

Sorry, not Navarone:}... When I wrote about 'jumping the gun', I was meaning starting a new pic before the last one was confirmed as being correct by REF!

As to the other guesses.....all wrong I'm afraid:(, although Speechless two is correct with the aircraft type and reg:D;)

Kingsfield Airstrip, Dhekelia, Larnaca, Cyprus?

621andy 23rd Jan 2008 08:57

Evansb does it again!

Kingsfield is used by Crusaders Gliding Club(whom I can recommend incidentally:)) and the Army parachute club.
Its reason for exisiting is as an evacuation strip should the TCs get nasty again...Its proximity to the border meant that it was built cross to the prevailing seabreeze which means you get very good at x-wind landings;)

Incidentally, the T-Porter was there in support of the Red Devils who were doing their pre-season warm-up in Cyprus- much like the other 'Reds' do as well:ok:. It stopped us flying for 10 minutes, but at least I got a good shot of it...

chevvron 23rd Jan 2008 13:35

Well at least I got the Greek church right!!

evansb 23rd Jan 2008 16:20

The photo was taken in the 1940s. The aerodrome is not in Europe.

Pacific and a US base at all...........Thinking Marianas........

sabredog 24th Jan 2008 17:01

North Field Tinian?

evansb 24th Jan 2008 17:21

It is located in the Pacific. It is a U.S. base. It is not in the Marianas, nor is it Tinian.

StbdD 24th Jan 2008 19:19

IE Shima. Okinawa, Japan.

Site of the untimely death of one of the most beloved of war correspondents, Ernie Pyle.

If correct these might be of interest:

StbdD is correct.:ok: Ie Shima was also the base from which U.S. fighters downed the last Japanese aircraft of WW.II. You have control.

StbdD 24th Jan 2008 20:17

Thanks Evansb. Unfair advantage as that one is in my logbook.

How about this one folks?

I thought Tinian as well but couldn't get the island shape to match up. May have been the angle the photo was taken:confused:

VitaminGee 25th Jan 2008 13:09

Tiger_mate 25th Jan 2008 17:04

evansb 25th Jan 2008 18:08
