No, not Nicosia, but a good guess as that was our ultimate destination - the Whirlwinds were in UN colours.

Tiger_mate 14th Jul 2007 16:32

UN Whirlwinds in the latter days were from Akrotiri.

evansb 14th Jul 2007 17:56

Tunis - Carthage Airport, Tunisia?

D120A 14th Jul 2007 18:51

No, not Carthage.

..........with four RAF Whirlwind HAR10s and an Argosy in support...
That would be:

Day 1, Odiham - Orlean Bricy - Lyon Bron.
Day 2. Lyon Bron - Nice - Pisa.
Day 3. Pisa - Naples- Brindisi.
Day 4. Brindisi - Andravida- Athens.
Day 5. Athens - Rodos - Nicosia.

So it's one of them. :ok: PS. Bristows would have done it in one.

Tiger_mate 14th Jul 2007 19:02

The Whirlwinds went in a Belfast.

D120A 14th Jul 2007 19:05

Gosh, Forget, many more stops on your list than we actually took (we had fuel overload tanks fitted in the cabins). You are nearly right about the route except, curiously, the night-stop venue in the photograph is not in your list!

But somewhere in the middle you are close.

D120A 14th Jul 2007 19:11

No, Tiger mate, there were no Belfasts available, although that was the preferred option. In a previous deployment of Whirlwind 10s, from UK to El Adem for an exercise, the first one had apparenrly arrived about two days after the exercise ended, and HQ 38 Gp had said "never again". So all eyes were on us for this one, with the UN in New York watching. I'll post the outcome after this staging airfield has been guessed.

MReyn24050 14th Jul 2007 19:21

How about Les Mureaux, France
ICAO: LFXU. Where I believe they built some of the Nord Atlas

D120A 14th Jul 2007 19:33

Non, pas de France.

What! Air Clues wrong! :p

PS. I've just read the whole article and the 'itinerary' didn't work out. You were right

D120A 14th Jul 2007 19:51

Forget, how nice to see that article again! But we didn't quite follow that itinerary... What's on the next page?

Edit: And I have just re-read your post properly! So where's the picture?

forget 14th Jul 2007 20:42

I don't want to hi-jack the thread too much. Send me a PM with your e-mail address and I'll send you the three pages.

Tiger_mate 14th Jul 2007 21:15

Being a fellow Tiger, I should have got this sooner:
Odiham > Orleans-Bricy > Lyons > Nice>Pisa>Rome>Brindisi> Andravida> Athens > Rhodes > Cyprus

So Rome is the one differant from the previous list. Was the Israeli aircraft refuelling in preparation for a large sea crossing also?

D120A 14th Jul 2007 22:10

Well done Tiger mate, Rome it was, and Ciampino to be exact. At that time Ciampino was a quiet, largely military, airfield, suitable for the likes of us. In recent times it has enjoyed something of a renaissance with the budget airlines using it.

All four 230 Sqn Whirlwinds arrived at Nicosia within 5 minutes of the op order time, thereby laying the ghost about SH deployments. Picture here of three at Nicosia airport, cooling off after landing. Over to you, Tiger mate, for the next puzzle!

Apologies to forget, I will change my 'handle' to Gazumpt!

Tiger Mate's challenge

RAF Wittering, Cambridgeshire?

evansb 15th Jul 2007 06:59

King Pong's challenge

Is it Heathrow?

Akrotiri bad boy 15th Jul 2007 07:10

Tiger Mate

I'll hazard a guess at Old Sarum.
