Gawd! I'm still struggling - to construct a google query................... but my 1960-61 Janes refers to a "Yungari Nokadaun" without any drawings or pictures. Googling that suggests it might be the challenge

The twin is the Beijing-1, which is preserved at the Beijing Aviation Museum. As is Harrier GR3 XZ965!

So I bag another 1960's British research aircraft! Roll on the H126 and HP115.
Converted from Fairey FD2 but something has always bugged me. Why did they convert WG774 which had held to world speed record, first over 1000 mph, in 1956 and not the near identical non record holding WG777? Not many countries would deliberately destroy the originality of such a national icon. Anyone any idea why?

For the next challenge I'll offer this ...

Tu-91 Bychok

WG774 had a more powerful engine than WG777, so perhaps that was the reason?

Zaxis; I agree with you. I spend quite a bit of time in proximity to 777, and have the same question (although BEagle may have answered it). My guess is Philistines working in an office somewhere.

My guess is that far from "philistines" a logical decision was made by scientists and engineers to pick the most suitable airframe for future development with minds unclouded by silly, inappropriate sentimentality. To have done otherwise, risking best chances of success would indeed have been the decision of philistines and not consumate Professionals trying to advance the science.
