Tomato_soup, my referees were contacted a little over two weeks after the email from AsA that said they would be contacting them. I'm not sure what the timeline is like after referees are contacted, bc mine were contacted just this week. Maybe someone else will have some more information about the final stages before a possible job offer.
|
Tomato_soup,
I had my assessment day in June and one of my referees was contacted about a month after that. It was then about another 2 months until I was asked to complete the medical. Now I am just waiting for an offer, apparently I will be notified of this in the next couple of weeks. I know what the suspense is like! I still won't believe i'm in until I am actually there on the first day of the course. Hopefully you hear something soon! Good luck. |
I know what you mean Tomato Soup. I'm in the same boat, did the assessment day about 3 weeks ago, reference called over a week ago, now nothing to do but wait. It's driving me nuts.
Has anyone heard of anyone that had their references called, who was then not offered the job? |
Notes and Readings
I was hoping someone out there may have a copy of lecture notes or readings that I can have a look at. I have been out of study for so long, I feel I need to really do a bit of study to try and ascertain if I do have the aptitude for this career path or not.
|
Frankly, it would tell you very little. Yes, there's a lot to learn but it's not complicated - rote learning because you need to know the rules well enough to not refer to the manual very often as you won't have time when controlling. That's the easy bit. Academically ATC is far from rocket science - a smart Year 9 student would have little trouble comprehending it. There's just a shed load of it.
No amount of reading of notes and bookwork will tell you if you have the aptitude to pull it all together in the manner required to separate aircraft. That's the hard bit that can only be tested in a simulator once you have a sufficient amount of the required knowledge stuffed into your head. |
So got notification (official) that I am off to the assessment day on the 10th of November in Sydney :) Starting to freak out already, I really, really want this ... It has all been so quick so far:
Application 8 September to interview on Friday 17th October, notification only 3 days later that I am through to final assessment stage. Time to brush up on my math skills (only section I thought I did really badly in on the aptitude testing) |
Sent you PM benjipc

Can anyone tell me at what stage after the group assessment day, medical and reference check, you find out when your course starts ? Does anyone have any idea when the next tower course with vacancies might be starting? I'm in limbo at the moment, I am in northern nsw, all my furniture is in Adelaide - would love an idea as to whether I should just keep it in storage or not.. Or move there for 6 months, and possibly relocate to Melbourne before that ...

just did the online test, i think the hardest thing is to keep calm because you will be under the time pressure.

Online test
Hi guys,
Has anyone had a problem with accessing the SHL online test? I pressed submit and the pop up window just turned blank. I tried Internet Explorer and Firefox. Does this have something to do with the web browser / version that I am using? Any assistance would be appreciated . Thanks! |
Right click and open in new tab to avoid the blank screen :ok:
|
Thanks for that North! Worked like a charm :D
Just out of curiosity, are we only able to take the online test once? (I.e. If we fail the first try are we able to apply and do it again?) |
Danny,
As it says in the application, you are only allowed to apply twice. If you don't make it the first time you may try again after 12 months. Good luck! |
Argh - between jobs (and states), was on my way back from SA to NSW after putting everything I own in storage over there when I received notification I had gotten through to the interview stage. Passed the interview, and now off to the assessment. Only thing is I realised I left all my personal files in storage over there - including all my educational documents, birth certificate and passport!! All which I need for the assessment centre. So looks like an unscheduled flight from Sydney to Adelaide in order to pick up these things and then fly back for the assessment day. Better start looking for cheap flights ......

Online Test
Thanks for the info shortmacc :)
Anyone on here took the online assessment recently? Took mine on Friday and I'm completely unsure as to how I went. Some questions had pretty obvious answers, but some of them I was not very sure about. How long until you find out whether you passed or failed the test? I've been skimming through some of the older posts and from I've gathered, it seems that they contact you immediately if you passed the online test to book a phone interview. Is this still the case? And does anyone know how long it normally takes for them to inform you if you failed the test? Thanks in advance! |
Assessment day
I'm off to the assessment day next month - does anyone have any insight on what is expected during this day?
Cheers |
Finally received an offer from Airservices! Anyone else on the Brisbane enroute course commencing on the 2nd of March next year?
Would be great to catch up with some other course members if there is a chance. |
well done and congrats Shortmacc

2nd of March in Brisbane
I got my offer for 2nd of March in Brissie yesterday too shortmacc!! Have you done your medical assessment as yet? I've completed mine, but still waiting on results, unless this means they've now finished assessing me?
Anyway, where are you based? I'm in Canberra. Are you doing Enroute or Tower? Is Brissie your final destination? |
I had a lot of issues too, definitely affected some of my answers, but I was lucky I got through ok. Good luck
|
@lovetorun, thanks!
Soontobeinmelbourne, my medical was finalised about a month ago. I am from QLD, currently in Perth. So basically just moving home ;) I am on the enroute course, with a final position in Brisbane. What about yourself? |
Interview Hints PLS
Hey guys any tips for my phone interview THIS week? Then last interview/day that follows? (I found info on the day on here but not much on phone interview).
Any and all will be of help. I am looking at a career change- currently maths teacher. Friends of friends in the industry had been trying to get me into it for a while, went out to Airservices (Sydney) very briefly, got an idea but a very basic one! Definately like the sound and look of it (right up my alley) but don't really know much about it. Read through a bunch of threads and am worried my lack of aircraft knowledge, codes and knowing which stream I'd prefer (en route or tower) will go against me. What should I know and read up on today or tomorrow? THX! PS What's the best stream for a possible Sydney position and limited if any overnight work? Thanks again!!! |
limited if any overnight work |
I am on the enroute course, with a final position in Brisbane. What about yourself? |
I'll have to change my name to SoonToBeInBrissie now!
|
not sure what that meant Knackers
Incase you're asking for clarification: I was told by friend of friend at air services sydney that you chose your shifts, ie he does mornings, another does just afternoons, ie no overnight shifts. Another person said you do one overnight shift a month. Another friend who has a friend in airservices says its first in best dressed each month, so prob a few overnighters in there each month. I'm not good with overnighters, therefore looking to avoid them where possible. Any phone interview info or advice. Thx |
skytest
can anyone please borrow me the skytest atco program? I will return the money but right now I'm so broke and testing is coming up in 1 week!
|
Recieved my Letter of Offer for the En-route course starting in MEL on the 13th April 2015. Looking forward to getting stuck into it come April next year.
Thanks to everyone on here for all their insight and patience with us applicants, it is much appreciated. Cheers |
Roster
The friends of friends have no idea. These days the published roster is issued and you then have the ability to swap shifts if you can find someone to do it with and it meets rostering and fatigue guidelines. Unallocated shifts (not enough staff to carry the roster) are up for grabs to swap with, again subject to the rules. Straight from the college to Sydney Tower has happened but the trainee needs to have demonstrated ability in the simulator, generally above his course mates. This ability will need to be confirmed, probably, by a Sydney Tower checker. On arriving in Sydney Tower it will be at least 2 years til you could expect full ratings and then night shifts. If you really don't like night shifts then I have to say maybe this isn't for you cause they are a fact of life for most ATC. Maybe you should be looking at a regional or Metro D Tower that is non continuous ( no nights).

Whizz Wheel / Flight Computer
Just did my telephone interview. Can't wait to hear if I get through to the assessment day. Hoping for Melbourne Enroute.
Does anyone know if Airservices will allow a watch with a whizz wheel into the assessment day? |
Paperplanepilot,
I wore my citizen skyhawk watch into the assessment day, this particular watch has a whizz wheel on the outer bezel. They didn't check, or seem to care really. But to be honest it is not required, and they may get suspicious if you are playing with your watch during the testing. As I said though you don't really need a whizz wheel for the assessment day questions. All the best. |
ARN application
To all those who have just recently been offered an air traffic position, how long did it take CASA to give you an ARN. I emailed my application off on Monday (27th November) and they sent back an automatically generated email saying "blah blah blah, we are experiencing delays in processing correspondence due to blah blah blah."
Can't really sort out the medical stuff until I have an ARN so was curious about expected timeframe. Thanks in Advance. |
ARN
Mine only took a few days from memory. I rang them and asked for it over the phone after about three days and they gave it to me, and then the letter arrived a few days after that.
You can start your medicals without it though, especially your dame appointment as they will do a few checks and refer you to a number of other places for further testing. You don't really need to have your ARN at that first appointment as they don't send anything back to CASA until all of your other tests are finished anyway (well that's what they told me). |
Yeah, that's the same sort of story I got, except for the eye test. She was adamant that the process would be much easier if I had an ARN before doing that test. I'll give them a ring Wednesday and see what they have to say for themselves.
Thanks. |
Kiwi,
There are remote TCU's (separate buildings to the towers) at Perth, Adelaide, Cairns and Sydney. Melbourne and Canberra TCU's are in Melbourne Centre. Brisbane TCU is in Brisbane Centre. Facilities | Airservices This may change in the not so distant future (TCU consolidation) :ok: |
OPQ test
Hi guys,
Anyone took the OPQ exam recently and received feedback yet? The wait is killing me! haha! |
ATC Danny, Yeah I had to wait 4 weeks for the phone interview.
|
Thanks for the info pineapple. Must've been the longest 4 weeks ever! Haha
|
Well was looking for a career change ( pilot to ATC ) but failed the online assessment!
I have military service where I passed aircrew aptitude testing but I don't seem to have what it takes to do ATC. I'm a bit confused. I don't think I did that badly or is the pass mark rather high? |
Hey pilotchute..good to see you on here..did you try a few of the online practice tests from SHL? The pointy end is a bit lean at the moment.
It depends on the test, some have a really high pass mark..I didn't find out from ASA but I got told my results from Airways NZ. |
