Has anybody who has applied in the latest round from new hires heard back yet? I know applications only closed last night, just seeing if they might have been processing them as they came in over the last 2 months.

DD70 4th Aug 2014 08:30

SenZubEanS.

I submitted my application on the 24th June 2014.
I received a reply and offer to complete the online assessment on the 27th July.
I completed the online assessment on the 1st August.
I received a reply that I had successfully completed the online assessment on the 4th July.
I have just completed the new Occupational Personality Questionnaire (OPQ). I now wait and see if I get a telephone interview and make it to the assessment day.

Good luck with your application.

JC91 6th Aug 2014 05:27

Hi all,

Just logged on to the portal and my application status has changed from 'assessment day complete' to 'application outcome' so I'm 99.99% sure that means unsuccessful :{ lol

Best of luck to all the new applicants and I'll confirm when I get my rejection email.. If I anyone has any questions regarding the process feel free to PM me but I'm not going to tell you about the assessment days activities..

SenZubEanS 6th Aug 2014 11:43

Thanks DD70.
Seems a month for first contact is a common occurrence, so might be a another week before I hear back. I foolishly thought I could apply and then just put it out of my thoughts until I heard back... it's proving not to be the case :D haha

SP11 7th Aug 2014 01:32

Any news JC91? Mine says the same and no news yet. Surely if it was a rejection the email wouldve come through already?

JC91 7th Aug 2014 05:13

Not yet mate. As in understand it everyone else that seems to have gotten through go from assessment centre complete to reference checks.. I think...

Maybe someone else can confirm that was successful whether it was application outcome and then reference checks?

The two I have seen in the thread that change to application outcome have reported back within a few days that they receive their rejection letter.. On average about 3 days..

SP11 7th Aug 2014 05:42

That's a bummer! Thought I did well, I guess tomorrow is when the e-mail should come through then :(

JC91 8th Aug 2014 01:54

Yep it's official, just got the email. Now to ask for feedback and see where I went wrong. Good luck SP

-JLS- 8th Aug 2014 10:38

I got the email today too, pretty disappointing :( I'm tempted to apply again next year as soon as I can - but I'll also wait until I get the feedback to see if it is worth putting in the time and money again. Good luck to everyone moving through from this latest group of assessment days!

shortmacc 8th Aug 2014 13:18

Hey JLS, sorry to hear about your result :( When did you have your assessment day if you don't mind me asking?

I was in Sydney on the 30th of July....so it only took just over a week to get the result back.

Just to add my personal application timeframe to the others in the thread:
-Applied on 20th February,
-Invited for online testing on 12th March,
-Invited for phone interview on 28th May, with the interview the following week,
-Invited to book assessment centre day on 6th June,
-Assessment centre day on the 30th July,
-Outcome email on 8th August

shortmacc 9th Aug 2014 02:40

Ah ok, I had a very similar timeline. Had my assessment in Sydney on the 28th of July (Monday). Anyone else on here have their assessment on the same day? It was a great bunch of guys and looking forward to hearing how they also went.

ontheup 9th Aug 2014 02:46

Cost of applying

Hi JLS,

Sorry to hear your outcome was not successful after such a long process.

I have applied for the first time in the latest round which has just recently closed - I see that you are also in Perth and cost is a factor in your decision to apply again. I have read through the entire thread, and it would seem that assessment centres are only run in the eastern states.

Is the travel the main cost that you refer to or did you also begin the medical certification process? And were you offered much choice in the location/date of assessment centres?

-JLS- 10th Aug 2014 12:20

Nah, just the cost of travel in my case. Obviously if I got somewhat close, then I will definitely try again - but if it turns out that it would be a real stretch to get in on the second attempt, then yes, the costs of return flights and a hotel in Sydney weigh into it a bit. Just getting to that stage was a great experience and I don't have any regrets about it at all, but it is a decent amount of money to put into something again if it looks like the same outcome is likely.

I was only offered Sydney for my assessment centre and a choice of one of 3 consecutive dates about 7 weeks ahead. They do also run them in Brisbane and Melbourne (and also occasionally in Canberra?). Not too difficult to get flights to Melbourne or Sydney from Perth though, which I think they are most likely to give to Perth candidates for that reason.

I already met the medical and ASIC requirements due to having a PPL - I have had my Class 1 medical since early stages of that. I believe there is some sort of agreement where if you are successful in your application with Airservices and you need to go and do your medical, you can potentially claim the costs of it back - but don't quote me on that.

Good luck with your application! :ok:

They used to pay for the medical upfront a couple of years ago when I did it. They even booked it for me. Now, I believe the applicant pays for it, then gets remunerated when they start work.

kookabat 11th Aug 2014 06:32

That is indeed how it currently is.

ontheup 11th Aug 2014 07:56

Thank you :)

Hopefully I will get as far as an invite to an assessment centre. Spending a bit on travel for the opportunity would be well worth it.

Reimbursement for the medical sounds logical -no real surprises there. Thanks for that info.

Big_Browna 12th Aug 2014 02:42

Hi guys,

With everyone else sharing their experience, I thought I'd share my application progress with you guys.

Applied on the 14th February
Notified to complete Online Test on the 19th March
Online Test completed on the 27th March
Offer of Phone Interview on the 4th April
Phone Interview Completed on the 8th April
Offer of Assessment Centre on the 11 April
Assessment Centre completed (Melbourne) on the 5th May
Notified I was required to re-sit Spatial Awareness Test on the 20 May
Re-sat Spatial Awareness Test on the 22 July
Requested to complete OPQ (Personality Questionnaire) 4th August
Advise of Referee Checks on the 6th August

In terms of the re-sit of the Spatial Awareness test, it was due to not meeting the requirements of the test. But having decent results in all the other assessments of the day they allowed me a chance to Re-sit it.

I'll keep you guys posted. Cheers

SenZubEanS 12th Aug 2014 07:20

That's great that they gave you the chance to re-do! Obviously they must be interested in having you on the team, best of luck for the next lot of feedback!!

Big_Browna 12th Aug 2014 07:28

Cheers SenZubEanS,

I guess it also shows that if you feel you have fallen a wee bit short on a particular test it may not mean the end for you.

Best of luck to everyone waiting for outcomes.

shortmacc 12th Aug 2014 08:03

Hey there Big Browna! I was asked for referees on the 6th also, just the nervous wait now to see when they get contacted.

Have your referees heard anything yet?

Big_Browna 12th Aug 2014 08:07

Hey shortmacc,

Not that i know of but fingers crossed it happens soon.

kenzi 12th Aug 2014 11:22

Room mates wanted

My housemate and I are currently on an Enroute and a Tower course at the Airservices Learning Academy, and we are looking for a third (possibly 4th) housemate to join us here in Melbourne.

If you have a start date around early October then PM me (sorry, females only).

BrianNZ 15th Aug 2014 02:17

Hi all, I'm new here.

It looks like I'll be taking the NZ tests in the nearish future, I am looking to start the Jan? 2015 training.

I've done the practice/example tests on the Airways site but wouldn't mind boning up on some more example tests if anyone knows of a good source.

Thanks

dimensions 17th Aug 2014 05:00

Hey guys, I received the invitation to do the online testing a few days ago. Literally only just completed it. I'm pretty interested to know how many of you guys went in that initial process.

I'm pretty sure I did well except for the pattern remembering one, does anyone know how it works with feedback? As I thought it would've been pretty instant with the ones with set answers.

I actually wasn't 100% sure if it had submitted correctly, but it looks as thought my application changed to 'online testing complete' which is promising.

Goodluck to everyone else who's applied or is doing the process right now.

shortmacc 17th Aug 2014 10:11

Hi Dimensions,

You won't receive any feedback apart from either an email asking you to book a time for a phone interview (if successful), or a thanks for coming, try again in 12 months email if you were unsuccessful. At least you are feeling good after the online testing, I thought I completely stuffed it when I completed the testing a few months ago. But here I am, now at the referee check stage :)

All the best with your application, this thread has a wealth of information, be sure to use it :ok:

lovetorun 24th Aug 2014 21:31

Hello All,

new to this forum - advised to get on board by other members.

I have been given an offer to commence en route training at Melbourne on 10th November. Will be scouring this thread to get as much info as possible, but any further info would be great.

Especially any preparation I can do prior to commencement to give myself the best chance at the learning academy.

Cheers

shortmacc 25th Aug 2014 23:35

Hi there Lovetorun, welcome to the forum! When did you receive your offer?

And all the best for your upcoming course and career :)

lovetorun 26th Aug 2014 01:57

Received offer about a month ago. Bloody long lead in to the course commencement - can't wait. Trying to anticipate what to study up on so I give myself every opportunity. I know the course will be extremely difficult. Absolutely pumped to get a chance.

lovetorun 26th Aug 2014 01:58

And thanks Shortmacc

fujii 26th Aug 2014 07:05

Lovetorun and others. There is not a lot you can do to prepare. Just be willing to work and study flat out. It will be nothing like any other course you have done before.

You could browse Skybrary (Google will find it). It is a good source of aviation material. The ATC content may give you some insight although not all is applicable to Australia. If you do use it, don't ever say "Skybrary said" to an instructor.

lovetorun 26th Aug 2014 09:50

Hey there benjipc. Look forward to meeting you soon. Yeah I received an email stating I would receive a USB 4-6 weeks out. I'll just cool my jets and wait for that info. Certainly didn't want to bombard ASA or HR before I even start.

Fujii, thanks very much for the advice. I will do and will not ever do. Yep, prepared to work and study hard. Family already briefed and have full support.:)

Application process time frame

Hi guys, my first post.

Firstly thanks to everyone posting here - it does give a pretty comprehensive overview of the whole process and expectations with time frames for different stages of the application.

As others have said - use the information provided as a guide. You should not need any specific information in regards to the testing etc. My approach was to relax, sit in my room alone with a glass of water and wear earplugs - do whatever is most comfortable for you before any sort of testing.
The aim of the game is to be yourself and project that through performing to the best of your ability.

Here is a very basic chronology of my application:

Date applied: 30 April 2014
Date advised of medical assessment information: 29 August 2014.

Good luck to all going through this process, or awaiting your employment offer.

I will look forward to studying and working with all involved.

Regards,

Tim.C

Adrian.p 2nd Sep 2014 08:00

Hey Watermelon, I start on the Enroute course on the 13th Oct in Brisbane too, If you wanted to catch up for a drink beforehand.

shortmacc 3rd Sep 2014 11:37

Can anyone shed any light on an approximate timeframe from assessment day to being notified of a successful outcome? I completed my assessment day in late July and was asked for referee details 1 week later. One of my referees was contacted about 3 weeks ago but I haven't heard anything since then.

All attempts at calling Airservices have resulted in getting through to a message service and never getting a call back. The one time I did get through to someone I was told everything would be finalised on Friday (last week). Anyone else have a similar timeline?

Cheers.

TechtoATC 4th Sep 2014 20:31

My journey through the application process has begun. Do I have what it takes?? Time will tell. I think I will be one of the older applicants as I'm nearly 40 and have had 22 years in avionics maintenance. I know experience doesn't really assist in this application process. See how I go. Will be taking the online test soon. Great forum, keep up the good info. :)

Medical Costs

Hey guys,

Just wondering, for those who have been offered a position or are currently training, What sort of costs were involved with your medicals?

I have just completed my Tests with the DAME incl. Blood test and ECG and have booked in with the Ophthalmologist and Audiologist.

I ended up paying $198 to the DAME and the $75 CASA Fee and have been advised that the cost of the Eye Tests is around $450 and have not had a price on the Hearing Tests.

Let me know what your experience has been. If you aren't comfortable posting it on the Thread, PM me.

Also, are these costs reimbursed by ASA or am I dreaming?

Cheers guys

pineappledaz 5th Sep 2014 12:07

$450 for eye test sounds a bit steep...

I pay around the $400 mark for a class 1...not sure if class 3 is similar
