That said, the training is very full on so favours the speed and flexibility of a younger brain. The generalisation is the older you are the harder it gets, so you at 40 will find it harder than you at 25 (but you still might find it easier than the 25 year old sitting next to you). What matters is it boils down to whether you can meet the standards or not, not your age.

From a purely statistical point of view at 40 you are behind the eight ball.

Probably the fairest and most accurate post written in this thread in regards to 'Age'. There is only one age related restriction...you need to be 18.

Clear2Land78 15th Jun 2014 16:46

Interesting that the USA (again) is the odd ball. The mandatory retirement age is 56. To get controllers to get the minimum time necessary, you have to be hired before your 31st birthday. The irony is that you can't access part of your retirement without penalty until age 57. This usually leaves controllers in a predicament for a year.

Coffs Harbour

Anybody know if Coffs Harbour (YCFS) is Approach procedural control or just Tower class D? Thanks for the help

cbradio 16th Jun 2014 12:08

I'm almost not game to ask this, but why do you ask?

WhichWayIsNorth 16th Jun 2014 12:49

Research for an interview next week. Not sure what location they have in mind so having a look at all possibilities.

Assessment day

Hi guys, just wondering if anyone can tell me if scientific or just basic calculators are provided on the day.

stevep64 21st Jun 2014 05:44

lew87,

Basic, that's all you need, it's mental arithmetic stuff.

Elias.K 24th Jun 2014 02:03

Hi Lew, They provide basic calculators for you to use on the day, so if you did the psychometric tests using a scientific calculator, then i recommend you do some practice tests on SHL using a basic function calculator.

DMCman 24th Jun 2014 08:24

Could anyone please advise on how much weighting/consideration is given to the 'Personality Questionnaire' that is required to be completed shortly before the assessment centre? My understanding is that it is supplemental to the interview on the day. Is the questionnaire given much consideration in weighing up an applicant overall? I find these types of questions extremely tricky to answer, even though you are told to answer them honestly!

Cheers.

Hempy 24th Jun 2014 11:43

DMCMan, I can't comment on a specific 'weighting', but the psychological factors are a big part of the process. It's not just about having the cognitive ability to do the job, you need to be able to emotionally cope with the responsibility under pressure as well. Just be honest and dont try and give answers you think they want to hear (to be honest it's a dead set give away if you try anyway..)

lew87 24th Jun 2014 12:46

Thanks for the heads up :) I was thinking that. I've been doing a lot of online practise shl tests to better prepare myself for the upcoming assessment day. I read on a related airservicesaustralia link online that there is a part to the assessment day covering vectors and time/speed/distance maths. I've been relearning most of this in the past couple of weeks. Hoping I can scrape through it alright. :)

Applications Re-Opened

Hello Everyone,

Just to let you know, Airservices has re-opened the application process for ATC.
The link is here:

Job details|Airservices

The initial requirements have been slightly lowered, removing the need for a science qualification. All you need now is a pass from High School that would allow entry into University. The testing is still very similar and the assessment day hasnt changed.

Get those applications in, and good luck to all that are interested!:ok:

SenZubEanS 26th Jun 2014 12:00

That is good news, wasn't sure i'd have my PPL license in hand by close of application window and previously didn't qualify under the old requirements for not having completed a year 12 maths.

Hello Everyone,

Just to let you know, Airservices has re-opened the application process for ATC.

The initial requirements have been slightly lowered, removing the need for a science qualification. All you need now is a pass from High School that would allow entry into University.
This is something that I have been advocating for a while, most senior school students (HSC, Matriculation, whatever) are told to take the subjects that excel at, be it Art, Music, Maths or Ancient History. This opens up a much wider net of potential applicants; however the important thing is the aptitude to do the job and the medical requirements.

Good luck one and all.

Elias.K 27th Jun 2014 00:48

I had my assessment a couple of weeks ago. One of my referees was contacted a couple of days ago but the other has heard nothing. Does anyone know of anyone who has gotten through with only one reference checked?

Elias.K 27th Jun 2014 04:30

Thanks for the heads up benji,

how long between the referees being contacted and you finding out you were successful?

DMCman 27th Jun 2014 05:12

I could not find any reference to the former 'You will only be allowed to submit two applications' lifetime restriction. Does this mean it no longer exists?

Elias.K 27th Jun 2014 05:43

From memory, this is mentioned in the preamble of the online application.

On my second application they add a question asking what would you do differently this time to get through, You would be hard pressed to convince them you would get it right a third time regardless of whether or not it's a hard and fast rule.

DMCman 27th Jun 2014 06:26

Agree with you completely but always thought it was a bit rough for those that missed out by literally one mark in an assessment centre, on perhaps two occasions. As someone posted on here earlier (not sure where), what about those that had to apply maybe 5 times, eventually got the job, went on to have a 30+ year career, became supervisors/trainers? These people exist...

Elias.K 27th Jun 2014 06:45

Agreed DMC,

I only missed out by a couple of points last year too which is why I reapplied, if I missed out by heaps then I wouldn't have bothered. Maybe they have worked out that a large percentage of applicants don't succeed on subsequent applications so they would rather allocate their resources on the better bet being the first timers.

Elias.K 30th Jun 2014 05:49

Anyone who had their final assessment 16-18 June in Canberra had any news yet? I had one of my references checked last Wednesday but nothing else yet.

Clear2Land78 1st Jul 2014 07:50

I can't speak for your situation but someone once told me that if you get your references checked, that's pretty much it and expect good news soon. Again, I applied international so I am don't know if it's different if your ab initio.

SenZubEanS 2nd Jul 2014 11:52

Just discovererd that I can't find my VCE certificate and ENTER score papers. Going to have to send off for a reissue, hope that doesn't take too long!

3kiddies 6th Jul 2014 11:24

Hi, I'm thinking of applying this year for ATC, as I left school in year 10 does anyone know if having a trade qualification as a chef meets entry requirements for ASA?

SenZubEanS 7th Jul 2014 00:09

3kiddies - It doesn't look like that would be enough going from the job application page. AFAIK they need the VCE pass and ENTER/ATAR/?? score to allow them to enrole you in the Diploma of Aviation (Air Traffic Control) that goes along with the learning stream.

So, unless you have a PPL or higher, I think you might be ineligible.

Elias.K 7th Jul 2014 05:49

3Kiddies,

The most fun way to qualify to apply is get your PPL :). Another option (and much cheaper) might be to do an adult course at a TAFE or the like to pass those subjects at VCE level.

Just ring Air Services and ask what your options are. Might not be as bad as you think.

SenZubEanS 9th Jul 2014 10:07

Just wondering, New hire's in the tower stream, how likely is it to get a posting to a major like Melb/Syd/Bris ?
Would you generally do a few years at a Bankstown/Moorabbin G/A type place then maybe a Broome FiFo/Charter with some RPT then move onto a major Domestic/International tower?

missy 9th Jul 2014 12:47

how likely is it to get a posting to a major like Melb/Syd/Bris?
Varies, most (all) of the towers would like an extra person on the roster. Individual preferences come into play as does the needs of the company, plus there is (often) an attempt to match the person to the Tower that will give them the best chance of getting rated. Sydney Tower has a few "new hires" (ab-initios), well, not so new now.

SenZubEanS 10th Jul 2014 02:21

Am I right in assuming that there is no a lot of frequent movement between locations as there would be an amount of retraining required when joining a new tower etc?

le Pingouin 10th Jul 2014 21:54

That's correct, although for remote locations the postings are usually "term transfers" - you go for a defined period (normally 2 years I think) and are then eligible to leave. You can usually opt to stay for longer.

JC91 15th Jul 2014 10:31

Did my assessment day today, was pretty happy with it all except for feeling a cold coming on...

Really good bunch of assessors and candidates..

Fingers crossed :)

This thread pretty much explains everything, don't try and study for it everything is provided information wise etc. And try to enjoy it!

Elias.K 18th Jul 2014 01:01

Looks like I'm in, just waiting for the official word. Have sent them my medical and unless there were unknown poppy seeds in my bagel I should have passed the drug test.

Was told if all goes wll with my application I would be starting 10 November. I forgot to ask though what stream I would be in. Anyone else starting the same date who could shed any light?

sunnySA 18th Jul 2014 05:47

Don't quote me... but...

I heard that the next Tower course starts early 2015 so on that basis I'd say it would be En-route, good luck.

SenZubEanS 21st Jul 2014 02:35

Elias and Benji, was en-route your first preference on application?

Elias.K 21st Jul 2014 03:15

hi Benji, yes, it will be good to put a face to a name in here :)..

I put down Enroute, but I haven't been told what stream i am in though. Apparently more than one course may start on the same date, so I might not be in the same course as Benji.

I really don't care where i end up. On the assessment day they told us you can apply to move, it just might take a few years to end up where you want. A small sacrifice when you look at the big picture and the sort of career this job offers.

Elias.K 21st Jul 2014 06:01

Just spoke with HR and was told I will be in En Route for 10 November. I was actually given the option of Brisbane or Melbourne or to go to Tower, so it appears they do try and put you where you prefer if they can. If I selected Tower stream however, she said I would be placed wherever I was operationally required and most likely not in a capital city.

JC91 21st Jul 2014 10:16

Did they give you any indication of a tower course start date?

dimensions 24th Jul 2014 07:07

Hey guys, long time lurker, new member. I've finally taken the jump and made an application. I'm just wondering how long it takes until you get past the first part of the application process. I submitted my application on the 14th of July, 10 days later, no reply.

I'm probably being impatient it hasn't been to long. However I'm reading that people have already been offered spots and what not.

urbandan 24th Jul 2014 08:25

Hey Dimension,

This is what I have experienced this year and keep in mind the whole process takes a long time! After applying it took about a month for application status to change to under review (log in and check it out) another week then invite for online testing, next day after completion invite for phone interview, about 2 weeks later invite for assessment day (approx 3 weeks later), then it was a further month or so until reference checks.

Be prepared for a long process and having patience helps but it is worth it. Also there are many courses offered throughout the year as they need quite a few people. Good luck!

caucatc 1st Aug 2014 14:24

Is there any people applied the Experienced ATC International?
