Earlier, later, makes no difference. It's still a two week cycle. Mine goes in on Wednesdays.

Hi Guys,

I've been provisionally offered a start date of the 1st of September. How likely is it that the recruitment team at ASA will be able to change that to a later start date?

Roger Standby 15th May 2014 07:47

I'm an ATC in Melbourne. I know a guy who has a couple of properties available near the airport (both furnished and unfurnished) for any Atc trainees who are looking for places to live while on course. PM me for details if you are interested. They are located in Sydenham, around 15-20 mins from the airport.

phone interview tomorrow

I've got my phone interview for ATC in training position tomorrow morning. Have been reading up on the ASA site all day and brushing up on some situational questions.

From what i've read throughout this thread it shouldn't be too difficult. Who else has had theirs recently?

Anyone else who has had their phone interview this week been scheduled for the training assessment day yet? I'm hoping we get a bit of time between now and the assessment day...need to study up and run through some practice testing still. I also was wondering if on the assessment day, can you take or use a calculator for the mathematical questions, or do we need to work these out in our head/on paper?

shortmacc 15th May 2014 21:13

Hi all!

Just curious to see if anyone else has had dramas with the online testing? I had a couple of computer issues just after beginning the testing and as a result of this I was unable to complete. I contacted SHL and airservices and advised of the problem. Unfortunately this was on a Friday and my deadline to complete the testing passed and I was notified that I was unsuccessful due to an incomplete assessment.

According to airservices there are a few people in the same situation. Hopefully there are some people on here that can shed a bit more light on the situation.

In the mean time I will wait patiently and hope for the best.

Cheers.

Hi Lew,

I had my phone interview on Wednesday. Still no response. This is the second time I am applying, last year when i did it I was told at the end of the interview that I was through to the Assessment stage. Going by others in the forum, you could wait a few weeks for this result. I think last year I had the HR manager interviewing me so she was able to make a decition on the spot, whereas maybe the others need to run it past managers or the like.

Shortmacc,

I had issues with my online test last week as well. Luckily I hadn't left my test to the last minute and was able to resolve it before the deadline. My problem was that the test woudln't load because my browser was blocking pop ups. I would be surprised if they don't give you another shot at it.

urbandan 16th May 2014 12:12

Hey lew87,

I have had my phone and assessment centre in last few months and they will let you know what you need for the assessment centre so don't stress about it but generally they provide everything you can use (and lunch :D) just be alert and well rested for the day. Also it doesn't hurt to keep your mind sharp using lumosity or some other brain training games. Good luck!

silverdieselcorolla 16th May 2014 13:39

Hi guys, I found out recently that I was unsuccessful in the assessment day which is a major bummer. Luckily I was able to get some detailed feedback to see where my strengths & weaknesses lie.

I apparently did well in all but one area of the assessment, so I'm thinking of giving it another shot next year.

So close, yet so far!
Best of luck to all those who have course offers!
Give it your best shot!!

Assessment Day

Hello! I have my assessment day tomorrow in Brisbane. Reading through most of the posts relating to it, I still don't really have a good idea of what to actually expect, but it has still been helpful none the less. Fingers crossed I actually pass all components tomorrow, I can only give it my best shot.
Anyone else going tomorrow??

Hempy 19th May 2014 09:43

Might be waiting for a while there Watermelon, all the enroute courses are being held in Melbourne as of this year. The last BN enroute course started about 6 months ago.

Ruth Jones 19th May 2014 12:57

Hempy, are you sure about that? We were told there is another course starting in October in Brisbane.
Not that it isn't beyond them to change things around lol

lew87 20th May 2014 02:06

I made it to assessment day!

Just received an email that I have passed my phone interview and invited to the assessment day in Brisbane, which run from 2-4th July this year. I'm stoked and nervous. Lots of study to do and prepare now. I've read a lot of awesome feedback from this forum which has been great. Any other little pointers you wish to share with me would be greatly appreciated. Woohoo!

Hempy 20th May 2014 06:02

Well put it this way....that is the current plan

Hi magic panda, how did you find the assessment day? Any tips to share? :) Hope it all went smoothly for you. All the best!

July 7th class

Hey all. I think I asked once before (can't remember) but is anyone here in this tower class also? Or if any of the instructors have an idea of how many students are in the class, I'd be curious to know.

Can't believe I am actually moving there in a week. If anyone is in Melbourne, always game for a hello while I get myself lost in the city. LOL.

fujii 22nd May 2014 05:30

Conversion courses usually run with two trainees and one instructor in the simulator. The sim instructor is usually the same one throughout although you will have a number of others during theory classes.

macbe327 25th May 2014 08:36

Hi all,
Experienced ATC from New Zealand starting on a Melbourne course August 18. Eventual location Sydney tower. Anyone else starting around then?

Clear2Land78 25th May 2014 20:53

Hey guys, I have my medicals/alcohol/drug testing booked in this coming wednesday and i applied via e-mail for my ARN exactly 2 weeks ago .. any idea how long it takes to receive the ARN and is it worthwhile calling CASA to harass them on it? Any info you guys can give on your experiences with this part of the application would be great!

I filled my ARN application on the 13th of May via email and when I checked upon it on the 28th by phone, it had already been issued... Call them up.

Online test query and assessment day

Hey everyone, I just wanted to know if anyone can verify if the initial online testing is the same as to what's on the assessment day?

I've got my assessment day in July, and have been doing some practise shl tests online to polish up, however I feel that some of the practise ones I've been doing seem slightly more challenging in some areas, than to what I remember doing on the initial ATC online test.

Ruth Jones 1st Jun 2014 04:32

Re assessment day computer testing:-
Some was fairly similar but from memory there were also additional very different tests as well that tested some specific skill sets.

I think that is a fair answer that doesn't reveal any information that would give any unfair advantages

itsonlyagame 4th Jun 2014 20:14

visa type

Can any of the international experienced controllers starting with Airservices tell me which work visa they are starting on.

Is it a 457 or a 402 ?

Clear2Land78 4th Jun 2014 21:03

I asked about that ... the 402 I believe is a training visa while we are training ... once certified, the visa turns into a long-term working visa 457 ... I am leaving in 3 weeks so that better be right! LOL

Hours of operation

Can anyone advise where to find hours of operation for Australian airports? I have looked in the AIP but with no luck. The structure is quite different from what we have...

Hi;

I am applying on a 402. I understood that after FIELD TRAINING we will file for 457.

As CLEARTOLAND78 said...that better be right!

Cheers, Sixchecked:ok:

Readback error ...

It's Clear2Land78, not ClearToLand78 ...

Just saying :ok:

LOL! (hey, a little humor goes a loooooong way)

Age query

Hey all. Long time reader but first post on the forum.

I'm currently thinking about the possibility of a career shift into ATC and I had a question about age. Specifically, is 40 considered too old to start the process, or would it be a non-issue? Not looking to call anyone ageist or anything like that, just after honest feedback so I don't start down a path that I may find made more difficult because younger guys and girls are preferred.

I currently work in the aerospace field, but more on the engineering side of the fence.

Cheers,
Woodsy

Arrival advice

Hey all. My arrival date is coming up at the end of the month. I had a few questions.

I just received a welcome packet email from Airservices. My questions are for those with experience from arriving abroad. I know that Airservices covers 6 weeks car hire. I was told I should buy a car in Melbourne. I know it seems cut and dry, but does anyone have any tips on how I should go about the process, i.e. Should I have a car for the first day or can I swing it with getting a ride from someone who has a car already (I would be more than happy to pay my share of gas) just until I can formulate a strategy.

If I require a car hire right away, can I get away with a taxi or car service to take me from the airport to the housing complex until I am rested and ready to deal with a car hire? Is there anything about a car hire in Australia that I should know that may catch me off guard?

Sorry to bug you all (it's late here in the United States and my nieces and nephews are worn their uncle out). But I do appreciate all the help. I still cannot believe that I am actually about to do this.

Thanks!

kpnagidi 12th Jun 2014 02:42

Hi there,

Check your benefits tab on the employee portal re car hire. DON'T pick up from the airport, costs an additional $99 or something for a 10 day hire..

le Pingouin 12th Jun 2014 08:30

2rights, there is no age discrimination, either positive or negative. You sink or swim on your own merits - that applies to the entire process, from initial testing to final field training. You'll be given exactly the same chance as everyone else.

That said, the training is very full on so favours the speed and flexibility of a younger brain. The generalisation is the older you are the harder it gets, so you at 40 will find it harder than you at 25 (but you still might find it easier than the 25 year old sitting next to you). What matters is it boils down to whether you can meet the standards or not, not your age.

From a purely statistical point of view at 40 you are behind the eight ball.

Clear2Land78 12th Jun 2014 11:39

Hey sir --

I cannot access the portal anymore. After I completed all the tasks as an applicant, it said I was done. Should I be have access to it? Should I be talking to someone about it? Thanks!

urbandan 13th Jun 2014 06:22

Hey guys,

I've just had all my medicals and both DAME/DAO confirmed they sent the results to CASA on tuesday of this week and I know the casa site says to give 28 days from when they get everything (already paid processing fee) but how long have you guys experienced it has taken? is it better to wait until next month then call em up or do it earlier? I had to ring them for my ARN and got it verbally .. still haven't received any corro from them in regards to it haha. Thanks all for your help!

2rightsmake1wrong 14th Jun 2014 06:28

Age query

Thanks for the comprehensive reply le Pingouin. That answers my question nicely.

Cheers.
