EMA revised Transition alt etc

The transition altitude at EMA has changed today to 6,000 ft amsl.

The northern SIDS (via ASNIP etc) have a blocked altitude of 6,000 ft QNH, yet the southern SIDS (via DTY etc) havd a blocked level of FL 90.

One questions the wisdom of mixing Altitude and Flight Level as limits on different SIDS wrt potential level busts.

(Please no debate on a uniform TA in UK, thats been done to death on other threads before!)

number of reasons why northbounds go to 6000ft and south to FL 90, mainly due to interaction with Birmingham SIDS, has not been a problem yet and we are re-iterating the cleared level on delivery of clearance

almost professional, thanks for that, i appreciate those reasons and, being professional pilots, we should know what we are doing with the altimeters.

However, my feeling is that mixing the stop between altitudes and flight levels is a recipe for the odd altitude bust. Is there anywhere else that has this sort of mix?

Not sure-perhaps Birmingham do also now? Will have a look at AIP when I have a mo tomorow
We have done lot of training on sim to raise awareness of the pitfalls, and to trial the procedures, but I guess those designing them did the best in the circumstances

Stand use

Whats going on with the stand use after the first wave of flights. I've noticed over the last week or so, I have been using stands 12, 14,15,16,17 after the first wave of flights. Someone from SSP told me it was because the airport wants pax in the main part of the terminal where the shops are located, and not gates 1-5, any truth in this?

Would you be surprised if this wasn't the case?

Have been asked to update the pics on the demise of the 767 so here we go, state of play as of today. Engines are off and windows are gone.

Yes i would, we have to bus pax back to arrivals now, and it is messing up the 25 min turn around.

Speaking personally, I would be happy to spend a few extra minutes on the ground if it helped safeguard the jobs of those working in the shops and cafes in the departure lounge.

All i will say to that is 3 w h smiths :ugh: i think its a joke all the cafes/bars in the terminal are ran by the same company.

Well the low-costs won't be giving much in terms of aeronautical revenue to the airport, so if the only way of making money (or increase revenue) is to get passengers to walk past the shops, then so be it. A personal example - I always seem to fly from 1-5, however, if I was to leave from the other end, I might be tempted to buy something from Millies or whatever. And that's exactly what the airport wants!

OliWW 24th Mar 2011 17:29

It aint just at EMA, FR have done deals with a number of airports like BRS, MAN, BOH to allow an additional 1 item + 1 item of hand luggage, and is trying to help attract pax to using their services. I'm guessing its all part of FR's changing business model to aim to be more customer services based which has been on the board for a while...

Who wants to be a millionaire?

Perhaps the ex-UKIA 767 should carry the banner - 'A warning to wannabe airline moguls'!

Well my last 5 flights out of EMS have always been from 1-5. I take a walk round the shops and view the ramp before going through the poorly marked door to the gates. If EMA / traders are complaining about loss of trade, maybe their prices are too high. Alternately, maybe the airport should have designed the layout rather better, and allow the "untouchables" - who they expect to spend money to supplement the landing fees - flying from the lo-co gates free access to the shops.
