Southampton-3
Based on the biggest airports from October 2023's passenger stats, SOU is 21st in terms of percentage recovery from October 2019 - 41%. The majority of bigger airports are over 80% - ABZ, LCY and CWL are also below 80% Bournemouth and Bristol have increased passenger numbers.
Flybe's Dash-8's had 82 seats, compared to LM's 145's at 49 and EZY's 319's at 156.
I agree that a that a diversity of operators is a good thing

Very happy indeed Chaps and Ladies;
Just booked Easyjet from SOU to LPL on a Friday in the New Year (via a quickish change at BFS) all for just one-way at a tad over £60 quid.
Journey time just 4 hours.
Although I want to go to LPL (to see an old Pal who lives in the heart of the City) a trip flying from SOU to MAN via BFS was slightly quicker and cheaper at £43!
Beat that folks stuck on the M5/M3/M6 whatever, or on Cross Country bloody trains...LOL

Frankly, I don't give a Tinker's T*ss about who's making money here ->>> I got a cheap ticket via a quick journey from my 'Local' and that's what it's all about isn't it >?
It depends if you want to make that journey again some time in the future. You could find that that option isn't available as the prices aren't sustainable. Short term gain = long term pain.
Grab it while you can then, as they say eh >?
The common denominator is LOW COST - you cannot always have it both ways - The cheap seats usually sell first and then up she goes -
You should all know that by now, Class....do pay attention at the back Hoskins Minor......

Given the new routes would anyone care to predict what this number will be this time next year? Presumably the 1.2 million break-even point will be achieved but will it be much more than that?

If I'm reading the latest CAA data correctly Southampton handled 746K passengers in the year Nov 22 to Oct 23.

A lot of cruises from Southampton are marketed as "no fly" cruises - specifically for people who don't want a flight at the start or end of their holiday, so not sure if they would have that much of an impact on the airport.
"No-fly cruise" just means that it's a cruise where there's not a flight, or flights, built into the package - as opposed to a "fly-cruise" where the flights are included (as I did last month, flying on a Tui charter for P&O to join their ship in Barbados). It doesn't mean that you might not need to fly (at your own cost/by your own arrangements) to the point where the cruise starts from.
The reason SOUs passenger numbers haven’t recovered as fast is because LM fly tiny little business jets which can only take 50 passengers at a time and tickets are a lot. That’s not SOUs fault and is why they are keen to move on to EZY. LM do 4 flights a day to GLA/EDI which is only 200 seats each way. No where near enough to satisfy demand or indeed boost SOUs passenger numbers back to where they should be.
Also, there is no flybe type operation that bridges the gap between a too expensive LM and a low cost operator which there was when SOU was at its height. Again, not SOUs fault. When EZY can grow at SOU they will and we will be back at the 2m annual passenger mark.

You blame Loganair for SOU not being where it "should be"? You really do have a chip on your shoulder with LM. Your inability to get your head round the fact that flybe failed exactly because of the reasons highlighted above is worrying. That business model isn't profitable, it never, ever was. Let it go and move on.
Easy Jet operations UK from SOU could stop as quickly as it has started.
There's plenty of people who moan that you can't rely on Ryanair either and that they keep abandoning airports or seeking ever cheaper airport fees - there's an endless llist of people who consider them as commercial sharks...
Same is often said of Wizzair - see the Cardiff and Doncaster threads if you want evidence of this
If you look at the East Midlands, Newcastle and Southend threads, you'll find people willing to moan about Easyjet short-termism
Maybe you would llike to look at British Airways - but the people in Birmingham and Manchester seem aggrieved and refer to BA as London Airways because they abandoned their substantial route networks at BHX and MAN.
However, when you look at the combination of Easyjet, Ryanair and Wizzair... you end up with a huge number of flights and a huge number of people flying all over Europe.
Who do you think are the big players who are going to bring large numbers of pax to SOU ? ATR42 and E145 aircraft just aren't big enough as aircraft to get SOU to 1m pax per year. Lufthansa have just suspended Bristol and Liverpool - I can't see them coming to SOU in a big way any time soon.
Sometimes it's better to accept a "good enough" solution that exists, rather than seeking a perfect solution which may not exist.
Easyjet has its critics - and I've had times when I've cursed them... but in comparison to many other airlines, they are definitely on the "reputable and respectable" list.
