Mentioned wide bodies is laughable, SEN will never attract that. STN has tried and failed
Sooner or later either Heathrow or Gatwick will get a second runway

My head is spinning. Surely the thoughtful post by cumbrianboy was just pointing out that, even if you could make the runway the longest and widest in the UK, it doesn't necessarily follow that all the big boys would swarm in to offer SEN-Various long haul exotic destinations.
I wouldn't want the management to keep bemoaning the airport's shortcomings (no pun intended), just keep working on the airport's strengths.
But I definitely think it pays to keep an open mind. Who would have predicted LCY-JFK? (Yes I know how they do it).

So as I posted yesterday, millions being invested in taxiway upgrades and tarmac being laid to allow stands for an additional 5 A320 sized aircraft, together with increased car parking, makes me think something positive is going on.

It's good that the stand/taxiway work is being done because it really needed it. The car park expansion is also good forward planning. If it is in anticipation of more flights then even better.

So passengers will be complaining about long walks to and from some stands or will passengers be coached? Neither is ideal but expansion means the advantages of Southend with its easy passage through the terminal might be ending soon
Couple of extra hundred yards is hardly a long way to walk, some people will always moan....never happy
Expanding and keeping these benefits will be a good trick

You are spot on. In fairness Glyn Jones has spoken many times about the need to maintain the current advantages and the user-friendly nature of the airport as it grows.
I agree it won't be easy, but first things first. Let's see some consistent growth.

The good thing is, you'll never have a long walk to the gate from departures because of how the terminal is laid out, so that is unlikely to change. The main challenge will be keeping security and passport control queues down to 10 mins with increasing passenger numbers. They've just installed a third security check lane, and currently have 6 passport control desks available. There is probably room for another 2 security lanes (max), whilst more passport control desks maybe possible too. This is more than adequate for the time being. As for the retail offering, this is being expanded too with the new Bourgee Bites restaurant opening at the end of May and a new temporary pop-up shop (Hipanema) in the old tax and duty free unit. It would take some major growth to start causing terminal congestion in its present set up.
