LUTON -8
Debates and discussions are good providing they do not turn into personal slanging matches and keep to the point, keep going FR.

There is a document somewhere that confirms that Luton has the second biggest catchment area after Heathrow. Not sure what defines the size of a catchment area but I seem to remember it was about travel times and not distance.

Indeed travel times are what I were referring to. I admit I didn't make that as clear as I could have and I agree that a "catchment area" is very difficult to define.
But when you say LTN has the second biggest catchment area, how much of that do you think is distorted by overlapping catchment areas from other airports? I'm either in Leicester or Coventry and would definitely say that is in LTN's catchment area but understandably the vast majority of people here use EMA or BHX.

This isn't any criticism of LTN, but just highlights the irrelevance of "catchment" to the viability of an airport or particular service

Exactly. Although sometimes with the example of say LHR and LTN, they are both very different airports and someone in Uxbridge may use LTN because their travel needs are driven by price rather than convenience.
But in most cases, such as Leicester, we can already get the vast majority of what LTN offers (apart from a handful of mainly Eastern European routes) from EMA and BHX. I would say people in Leicester even generally use STN about as much as they would LTN, I would guess given the greater range of European destinations.

My opinion... I don't see any chance of Emirates any time soon, I have no idea where to rumour keeps coming from. I don't see them operating into LTN or STN.
Over the next couple of years I would expect the big Orange to massively dominate any "New flight" announcements, I also see Monarch and Atlasjet pushing more stuff through LTN. Wizz will no doubt utilize the A321 on LTN routes when they get it.
I would expect a connection to somewhere like NYC before any direct flights to places like Dubai. Don't particularly see that happening either though.
The "new" airlines that do end up here will probably be along the lines of what Tarom have done. Airlines that are squeezed out of LHR. The airline industry is ridiculously hard to predict though. So many bizarre routes pop up yearly.

I half heard on the radio today that planning permission for the redevelopment was granted yesterday.
I also see that drilling rigs have been taking soil samples in the corner of Easyjet’s old car park opposite the fire station and today in the short term car park

Yes it does
EDI 10037406
LTN 10080652
But don't read too much into it.
It's more about the airport experience and LTN still has a way to go IMHO.
Will have a look at the breakdown of routes to see who helped, suspect it will be Wizz who contributed the most.

As suspected Wizz drove most of the gain.
Eastern Europe routes were particularly popular
Sofia +57%
Lublin +46%
Cluj. +48%
Debrecen. +40%
Gdansk +38%
The list just goes on, even seasonal routes like Split saw 30%+
All Irish routes did well
Routes down on last year were Funchal , Las Palmas , Larnaca and Dalaman by ten percent or more , probably due to number of rotations and continual tweaking.
Wizz only really had one route down significantly on last year Belgrade -26%
This is only a snapshot , we have no idea of yields on routes but in general shows that the Airlines appear to be doing ok.

Has LTN-Erbil been launched, or is it just a press statement about intending to launch? Luton-Erbil isn't an option in the Zagrosjet booking engine, not even as a connection with Atlasjet via IST

5th position gained!
These latest figures for Luton are very impressive and for the year end should surpass 2008 it's best year to date and possibly total 10,280,000 leaving EDI far behind!
