FR at Luton

FR probably missed the boat at LGW and East Eastern European routes at Luton, Ok it would have diluted their STN operation but they put their eggs in one basket! Oh and have a lack of capacity this year and next.

So is their lack of capacity a reason for dropping W14 Canaries routes from Luton as loads were good on the journeys I made.

The FR prices between STN and TFS hardly show great loads, except Xmas/New Year, probably one had to go to protect market. Compare with MON from Luton.

Whatever happens the Irish routes will stay. Malta, Marrakech & Murcia (unless EZY have a go on them) should also stay, along with Bratislava assuming Vienna doesn't make a return. The others could easily fall.

Premium business focused markets are FRs goal at the moment - Luton has that covered by EZY and to some extent W6, leaving FR with a lot of VFR and Leisure routes.

@gilesdavies,

You quote:

"LOL

Lets take it one step at a time...

The airport has been hovering around the 9.5-9.9 million mark for the last 7-8 years... Lets break through that 10 million mark first!"

Are you aware of the year 2008 when Luton handled just under 10.2 million passengers?

I honestly thought you knew facts now I am not so sure...

In effect the laugh is on you Lol!

Luton will shortly be regaining it's rightful position as the UK's 5th busiest airport!

I'm surprised loads to Tenerife are poor in the winter, as holiday prices around Xmas are just as expensive (if not more so) due to the climate of the Canaries. Some travel companies class it as a winter destination.

Where I live in Tenerife winter is always busier than the summer. Winter sun just 4+ hrs from the UK has the Canaries as you say a winter destination.

Is there a 'lack of ambition' by FR as suggested here? In reality, is there currently the available capacity at the airport for FR to add another couple of airframes if they wanted to?

Perhaps, as the airports expansion plans come to fruition, we might see more routes and planes, time will tell.

I do genuinely think they could & should improve their Irish links which have strong support in/around the Luton area. They wouldn't necessarily need to increase the number of based planes to improve their Irish connections

They have done Derry before and given Shannon a go a couple of times to my knowledge. They already serve Dublin, Kerry and Knock very well from LTN. With STN up the road already flying multiple daily flights to SNN, ORK etc. not sure why these routes would be a priority for them at LTN tbh.

My major surprise was when they dropped Luton-Trapani, As a regular user it was always packed and hard to get tickets on the cheap. Doesn't mean it was making money but LTN always had a connection to Sicily. All the charters back in the day to Palermo. Everyone I know that used the Trapani route just ended up using Easyjet to Catania from Luton instead which I think will prove to be a smart route.

How can you be so sure that Scotland will gain the independence vote ?
If not I think EDI will be 5th for the foreseeable future.

I seem to be spending a lot of time in the garden of the Bull pub at Whitwell around lunchtimes. Seems to be one Wizz after another.

Used the airport over the last 10 days - had to fly back to the UK due family bereavement, do try to avoid travelling at this time of year. Inbound Monarch flight from Gib 35 minutes early but had to wait 10 minutes for Menzies to supply steps. Straight through immigration - 9.30 pm Sunday evening). Return Sunday morning arrived early - 4.30am -knowing how busy it is checked in and straight through security! Very, very busy but everybody seemed to be reasonably happy as far as I could see. My good fortune couldnīt last - Monarch flight to Gib lack of staff at departure gate, just one person so vantage card holders etc all mixed in with the rest of us etc. Over 30 minutes late departing due to handling company - yes Menzies not getting the load sheet correct and passenger discrepancies but arrived back at Gib 10 minutes late so not so bad. Good to see the airport so busy no wonder both easy and Ryanair achieved over 90 per cent load factors in July.
By the way LTNman it is not mass immigration it is the free movement of people across the EU to work and/or live wherever they choose so please remember there are 3.5 million of us Brits who choose to do this in the rest of the EU. The only way this can change is to leave the EU no matter what the politicians pontificate about re-negotiation - it isnīt going to happen.

Don't shoot down his long standing gripe with other europeans doing what we do in the other direction, It's never ending.

It is Far Better that hard working Eastern Europeans arrive in the Luton area via LTN airport over more psychotic religious beardy folk destined for the craphole that is bury park.

Plus the average weight of women in town must have halved over the last few years which can only be a good thing.

That's what I said but in two words. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_migration

Anyway here is some good news.
Record-breaking summer for London Luton Airport | Beds On Sunday

RECORD numbers of passengers took to the skies from London Luton in June and July as the Airport experienced its busiest summer period on record.

More than one million passengers flew to over 100 destinations each month, including 14 new routes added so far this year.

New destinations include Naples, Catania and Skiathos with more announced for this winter, such as Copenhagen, Lyons and Basle.

The news comes just weeks after final planning consent was granted for a Ģ100m development of the Airport, which will increase annual passenger capacity from 12 million to 18 million per year by 2031 and enable London Luton to become a leading airport serving London, Luton and the surrounding regions.

The plans, including an expanded and modernised terminal building and improved surface access, are forecast to increase the Airport’s annual economic impact by Ģ283m to Ģ1.2bn per annum and create over 5,000 new jobs.

Clive Condie, executive chairman of London Luton Airport Operations Limited (LLAOL), said: “Demand from leisure and business passengers was remarkable in June and July and we expect to announce record passenger numbers for August too. Our exciting redevelopment plan, together with the support of our owners and our airline and business partners, means we are on track to deliver a local airport of which Luton and the region can be proud.”

Councillor Mohammed Ashraf, Chair of London Luton Airport Limited, said: “As the freehold owners of London Luton we are delighted with these results and that we can now press ahead with this exciting development. We have been working hard with LLAOL to deliver a shared ambition for the people who live and work in and around the area, which will deliver over 5,000 jobs by 2031.”
