Thanks Boeing737-8 I hadn't realised that Atlastjet were already looking to expand their routes from Luton. That's great news that they're taking on the Antalya route.

Buster the Bear - I agree that a Luton without Monarch is unthinkable. They're part of the fabric of the airport and I hope they'll be there for many, many years to come.

A Luton without Courtline was once unthinkable.
Pan Am once were mighty above all others but eventually disappeared. Even carriers like Easyjet or Ryanair have the capacity (albeit unlikely at the moment) to go bust.

Agreed dj6, but Monarch stood the test of time well and never lost an airframe. I know many of their Crown customers that were delighted to pay a small premium for that level of service, but Monarch binned Crown and then found it impossible to compete on price.

Give it a break, Lee Baket St - LTN is a shambles, from the unreliable busses between car parks, the poor condition of the car parks themselves, the ugly, faded and dirty frontage with cheap and nasty airline banner adverts, the leaking roofs, the ridiculously long corridors with no travellators or even any floor finishing (worn out, patchy, mismatched paint of cracked concrete doesn't cut it), filthy outdated ceilings with damp patches (legionairs disease, anyone?), and a duty free shop blocking the exit. It's rank amateur. I hope the redevelopment makes big changes, but since one of the changes over the last decade made the airport more pleasant to use, I won't get my hopes up.

Turned down a job with Monarch 30 odd years ago because I didn't think they would last to the end of the year (oh, and it would have meant moving to Luton... )

We all make mistakes, and then...

Having to get through the duty free shop and no seating is no different to other large airports. All they want you to do is spend money!

... that's because any investment, loan, running costs and modest profits has to be paid for in one way or another by the users of the airport.

Do Monarch own the Hangars they use at the airport or are they leased?

Who cares what the Tinminal is like? The most important aspect is passing in and out as swiftly and smoothly as possible. Ensuring rapid passage through security and passport/Border, plus quick access to baggage is all that matters.

Monarch hangars, well they used to own everything, but did they really? No doubt the M family have in the past done rather well out of business deals?

Wot Buster sed.

Not particularly a fan boi but just say as I find. Second flight out in the last week or so. Taxi from Hightown at 0720. Bag drop, security and having a coffee before 0750. Having said that it seemed due to the time of year there were less bucket and spaders and the punters there knew the routine. Less time lost due to unpacking and re-packing at security.

(Reuters) - Spain said on Friday it had authorised state-owned airport operator AENA to increase its stake in Luton airport to 51 percent more than one year after a joint venture comprised of AENA and fund AXA agreed to buy the London-based airport.

The approval comes as Spain is preparing a partial privatisation of the airports operator.

Wizz Air stated this week that their cost base is 10% higher than Ryanair. Considering opting to take 230 seated A321 to address the balance.

With the huge numbers of airframes on order by Ryanair, are Wizz concerned about the Irish airline making inroads into their 'home' markets longer-term?

Long Term maybe but RYR can't do much for the next couple of years until the 36/year frames start arriving.

"Considering opting to take the 230 seat A321"

I thought Wizz were already committed to adding the A321 to its fleet soon?

They are, but the max at the moment can only be 220 seats.

would be interested to know how the calculated FRs cost base? They have access to FRs negotiated contract deals with suppliers contractors and partners? I doubt it. 10% difference could still be way off the mark. Theyll have no idea what they paid Boeing for each 737 etc...

Ryanair's financail report says the list price of the last order was 78 million $/aircraft + 2,9 million /aircraft for "buyer finished" equipment - "allowances" from Boeing.
Final price of the 175 a/c was 13,8 billion $ which means approx 78,8 million $/aircraft. Surely they don't lie in their financial reports, I quess.

Monarch

Monarch was recently stated as being an 'iconic' airline!

The fact is-is that it it remains so!

The Britannia name was in my view the most iconic but the name was dropped!

Monarch is iconic to air travel here in the UK but this new management have no idea how special this airline is considered by many and once they grasp that fact they will be hell bent on restoring not just a trusted name but what has transpired to be the true queen of the British Sky's!

Many have commented on the 'Crown Service', I have experienced that service many times and yes I felt a valued customer!

Monarch will shortly be reaching 50 years of service-quite literally they deserve it!

As old fashioned as I may give the impression, Monarch does still set the standards in air travel and I for one do not lower my expectations or tolerate coach class in the 21st Century.

I can't see how they're iconic. Short haul they're ni different to anyone else, and no cheaper, long haul they're awful. I'd pay thomson a fair premium to avoid MON and their horrendous a330, unhelpful and rude crew and average food. Last time I flew with them I told myself never again. TOM now have the Dreamliner. Yes it is nice to see such a long standing grand still going, but they're no better than most.

If anyone can't imagine Luton without them then let me help: just imagine the same grim airport but with a few more orange tails flying in and out. Hope that helps.
