There are reasons (perhaps misguided) why MAG would not have wanted La Compagnie.
If they think that there is a chance (again perhaps misguided) that they might get an established airline to operate long haul from the airport, they wouldn't want a 'budget' club class operator in competition.
Now, it may be that STN will never get that airline, perhaps highly likely they don't, but that is MAGs ambition and those airlines require pax for their premium cabins to make it work.
Yes I think MAG would love a transatlantic operator but I don't think they wanted a startup 'low cost business' proposition that may have been a flash in the lab that potentially halted other developments.

So back to the LCC's and "Bucket and Spade" brigade to keep the figures going upwards.
Shame as two different styles of airlines go- wonder how the airport will try and spin it if interviewed!!!

There had been some straws in the wind:
Promo fares of £1000 return was always too cheap for the product - still being widely offered this summer.
BA chopped their second daily A318 service from LCY a few days ago.
It shows that the premium-only market is a very difficult one to succeed in.

LTN will always work best for the LCC and charter operators because the long haul premium market is just too tough a nut to crack.

There is a market for LTN-NYC, just possibly not the right product to fit the current demand. Once the 321neoLR comes out, maybe someone like JetBlue might look at Luton - Mint product upfront, and a cost-competitive economy.

Quite a few routes being axed from Luton have been announced:
Newark (La Compagnie)
Lanzarote (Monarch)
Dalaman (Thomson)
Istanbul (Atlasglobal)
Rome (Monarch)
Bratislava (Ryanair)
We'll have to see if any of the newer routes are coming back next year such as Adria Airways to Pristina, Iberia Regional to San Sebastián and Sun Express to Izmir.

it really needs to take a breath and get it's development fiasco sorted before trying to grow further and before trying to diversify away from the low fare market.
The presenter of the JVS show on Three Counties Radio made scathing comments about Luton and its hot dog stands that are positioned by the terminal entrance describing them as something you find at a fairground and not an international airport.
What I am noticing as the first parts of the airports expansion are completed are the poor quality and cheap finishing. This includes the passenger bridges and cores with their plastic windows, pure gravel parking in the mid term car park after part of it has been expanded and Gate 16 which lacks even a tiled floor and has painted walls that will mark in days.
Maybe all of that doesn't matter if the airport keeps growing the business with just LCC but it would be nice to see Luton at least off the bottom when it comes to league tables of the UK's best and worst airports and maybe trying to attract a few more established full fare carriers.
The very fact that they will be putting in a £200 million rail link will secure the airports future and maybe then they will add an airbridge or two at a later date.

Yes you are right, it is the council that is funding the rail link as far as I am aware but we all have to remember that AENA are the worlds largest airport operator so they should know what they are doing when it comes to growing Luton.
At the back of my mind is the fact that they are in effect only renting the airport and don't actually own it and will one day have to just hand it back over. With that in mind I can see why they would want to spend as little as possible.

That's never happened before ..
In truth though, it's not just LTN but almost every corporate entity in the UK does this now. It's standard to take the short term, cheapest option and then replace it later under 'maintenance'. It lowers the upfront cost and everyone thinks it's great. Except the customers.

The statistics for August 2016 are now out and available on Luton's website.
August 2016 saw 1,573,879 passengers travelling through Luton.
Copenhagen was the busiest route out of Luton in August with 63,432 passengers travelling on the route followed by Budapest (54,692), Bucharest (51,161) & Palma de Mallorca (50,756).
Due to Vueling's arrival, Amsterdam & Barcelona figures have significantly increases on last year.
The running total for this year so far up to August is 9,751,824. This is even more than the airport had for the whole year in 2013 and we still have 4 months of figures to come! So I would say looking at current trends we could be looking at 14-15 million passengers for the year.

Just saw these artist impressions of Luton on their instagram of what it should "supposedly" look like when the expansion is complete. For their sake I hope it looks like this because the cladding on the carpark and the pier looks awful imo.

From the latest artist impression compared to original i see the differences being:
Terminal building extended out further than previous.
Canopy made of tent/canvas/some other stretched material???
No onward travel centre?
The bridge cladding looking like current stuff going up.
Canopy from bridge core being made of similar tented canopy, which the bottom picture is missing.

According to "Transform" - a development update on the LLA website, the mass transit station will be above the drop-off zone. If the schematic map shown is correct, the track will cross the mid-term car park, pass over the taxiway, and cross above the newly-constructed walkway.

So ... the mass transit that was talked about donkey's years ago and could have been designed in donkey's years ago - will now have to go on stilts over working areas? Thus parts of the car park, taxiways, roadways and walkway will have to close again in sewuence, for it to be installed? Also, all of those places could be subject to inadvertent damage during the process.
