Just to clear up a point. The building isn't being demolished, it's just the ground floor that is being gutted and then refitted for part of the search area when that is eventually moved. If they were to demolish the building then the existing 1st floor search area would also disappear.

I think some of the confusion especially on my part is the choice of words the airport has used in their planning submission.

I have been told that phase 1 now starts in July but I will believe that when I see evidence of a contractors village being built. Also the old easyjet HQ is still to be knocked down but it might be the case that easyjet are hanging on to their car park located by the old HQ for as long as possible as they don't have an alternate site except the off site car park which is accessed via their bus.

2.3 These works, together with the provision of temporary buildings for contractors’ compounds and the creation of temporary access routes, under Part 4 of Schedule 2 of the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development)
Order 1995 will take place prior to the formal commencement of the Phase 1
works.

Additional enabling works relate to the terminal improvements. These are
necessary to create the space to enable the built improvements to take place.
They include provision of a temporary arrivals hall in the currently fallow area in
the Old Terminal Building, changes in access to the building, demolition of the
current arrivals hall,
preparation for the new security screening area and the
relocation of security equipment, preparation and repair of dilapidations on the
first floor, the erection of hoardings and other internal re-organisations.

watched the Hifly depart for the first time (for me) today- was struck by a long ground roll- I guess 1800M - more than the Silverjet 767s but I guess the are proportionately more loaded - and I know it might have been heavily de-rated.

Love the prefix (DJT) and callsign (Dreamjet)- wouldn't that have been a better name for the airline- guess someone's nabbed it.

As a frequent user of LTN I have to say at peak times the temp/new arrivals area is a nightmare. 8 flights on one conveyor belt the other day and with only one narrow exit point there were queues to get out.

The zebra crossing is becoming a nightmare for the busses and coaches - as customer after customer crosses. They would be better closing it and creating a new walkway around it but maintaining enough distance for the traffic - in my opinion

The easyJet car park in front of the tower is to close on the 30th June. The new site of the contractors village perhaps?

What them 8 flights have in luggage is similar to what the Thomson has for the 757. Most people who use LTN don't have baggage in the hold as there have to pay for it so this means a lot of the flights only having up to 30 cases.

Actually it could be a possibility that the contractors will use the former easyjet HQ building and car park as their village. One contractor is already located in the old easyjet building that is working in the terminal.

The old easyjet site will be the location for half of the multistory car park so it all depends when they intend to start work on that project, which was meant to have been brought forward to phase 1.

Until the multistory car park is finished and open the short term car park will be much smaller than it is now when it is modified as part of the new CTA. Bearing in mind that this car park is now often full and closed so things can only get worse. Lets hope that after 50 years it will be resurfaced properly this time.

It also poses the question what will the multistory car park be used for. Will that be short term car park number 2? Will part of it be a staff car park? Note that the multistory car park has a bigger footprint than hangar 89.

I've been using the 'port since 1985 and it looks as if this is going to be the third redesign of the coach/bus zone in 30 years? Or have I misread the plot?

Another observation is that the fee for the drop off zone will be collected by 5 pay on exit barriers by the multi-story car park. The short term car park will have 4 pay on exit barriers while the multi-story car park will have just 2 yet overall will have more parking spaces spread over several floors. Might well be the case that the multi-storey car parks won’t be used as a short term car park as the planners are expecting less traffic in there.

Wonder if the roof will become the unofficial home for the spotters as it will command great views.

I would also imagine that the zebra crossings in the bus station have become instantly one of the best used in the country.

So is this really a charter? Sounds more like a scheduled service to me. This will yet again cheese off MAG at Stansted as Luton picks up another long haul but then with Luton sitting right next to the M1 Luton is ideal for passengers heading north and south.

I might have some more good news next week that will this time upset some of the good folk at Southend who need a break. I just need a second confirmation.

Gone are the days when I could put a flag on a map for the cities served from Luton. Now I can't even flag the countries. Where will this all end?

Oh and this is the former Arrivals hall today. I bet the floor tiles won't line up or match when they extend security into the main terminal. Luton has always had an issue with floor tiles.

Looks like Wizz are going head-to-head against Air Moldova who operate Chisinau - Stansted on the same days.

Most of the Stansted flights are sold out for June so it will be interesting to see if Wizz take a small or large slice of the cake.

MAY PASSENGER FIGURES

A total of 1,135,701 passengers used the airport in May with the rolling 12 month figure standing at 11,024,249. So the 11 million passenger mark has been achieved by the end of May.

Fantastic Figures

Luton is doing fantastic at the moment and should be applauded!

I estimate VLM are carrying an average of 27 passengers per flight which is relatively good for a currently brand new service on a 50 seater A/C!

Whilst I could not find passenger levels on the LTN to New York Service it was interesting to see the passenger levels of the BA service from LCY has dropped considerably!

Whilst Luton forecast 11.37 million passengers for 2015 I believe 11.54 million is achievable! If EZY do base more aircraft at Luton next year then expect the 12 million mark to be achieved!

In relation to the comments regarding the new multi-storey car park (to be built) I did suggest to the Luton Airport representatives that the top level be used for enthusiasts and was told it could be a possibility- but was not ruled out!

Is there a likely completion date for the multi storey carpark yet? That would indeed be an epic location to spot from. Any chance of them setting up a little food / drink area to make a bit of money out of people coming to visit, or by the roof do you literally mean the very top out in the air? Judging by all the cars that seem to be at the crashgate you'd think it would be busy enough, especially during summer and school holidays. People would definitely bring their kids up if such an 'attraction' was officially open.
