May Route Anlaysis

Monthly Passenger figures: CAA Provisional Stats
Load factors and average per flight: BHX Bl*g & my records and seat-maps from various sites.

As ever a mixed bag with some new routes slow burners such as Icelandair and American with Athens also a bit low but it is the first May it has operated. In general the addition of Norwegian to Malaga has boosted the figures and kept the load factor high but can't say what it has done to yields. Copenhagen continues to struggle filling the bigger aircraft but most other business routes are doing well.

Certain routes don't add up and I am sure IT pax have been included such as Dubrovnik, Malta, Arrecife, Fuerteventura and Tenerife.

I believe Emirates was a record May and Turkish was creditable as well for the increased frequency.

Easyjet Belfast had 8 less sectors but lot few pax and Aberdeen has been affected by the oil industry job losses.

Some routes are not completed as I believe IT pax have been included in schedule pax

Ryanair

Winter 2015/6

The base is back to four for three weeks over Christmas and New Year with all but three routes (KUN, PMI & DUB) showing increased frequency for the holiday period. Dublin of course is up anyway with six flights on a Friday, Sunday and Monday and five the other days.

Monarch also seem to have added a couple of frequencies here are there although their first release contained Christmas and February half-term increases.

71% for NQY-BHX for MAY15 certainly seems as if its going well.

I still think this is a route that could be extended into winter, especially considering the EK codeshare which is about to be added to BE flights ex BHX, MAN etc

Interesting to see the high load factor for the sun & sea destinations but for the life of me I cannot understand why they pulled the Girona routes from BHX and EMA but fly there 11 times a week from Bristol with prices in 2015 nearly 20% less than the 2011/2 flights from EMA/BHX? Barcelona is of no use for those travelling to the North of Catalonia.

Talking of BCN I notice the quad of airlines are heading into winter together, albeit on reduced frequency. vueling and monarch on sale for 2016. Does anyone know how these airlines are all doing loads wise etc?

NQY/BCN

Certainly like Barcelona one of the more interesting routes to watch as load facors have been good and I have tried to monitor fares. They have been what you would expect with Friday and Saturday outbound BHX good and Sunday and Monday inbound with the rest of the week variable.

The flight is fully booked Thursday, Friday and Saturday already and Sunday not far but of course the schools break up Friday so not a good sample check really.

The fact that winter allows you to select the route indicates that it is under consideration but the same happened last year.

Winter is 3 x FR, 2 x VY, 2 x NAX and 3/4 ZB which is certainly a lot of capacity as I can remember some winters with not a single operator.

The June CAA stats should be out today and this will show the first full month of the four operators but of course no split between the airlines. I have seen some individual loads and they seem to be all pretty good with Monarch possibly the lower load factor but they use 73G's, A320's and 321's on the route to match demand.

Ryanair's Bristol-Girona operates 5 x weekly this summer. There was no service last winter and none is shown for the coming winter.

Potential new airline to BHX? Egyptian charter carrier air leisure list BHX and MAN as destinations on their website.

They are operational with A340's and MD83's, but not sure what destination they could serve as they don't list the typical tourist spots of Sharm and Hurgarda on their website.

LAX LHR

I seriously would take that with a pinch of salt, it's not as if there is all of a sudden more demand for flights to or from Egypt!

Sean,

I'm not sure what your remark is trying to point out really? Yes, demand for Egypt isn't suddenly going to go through the roof, but, equally there's nothing stopping any carrier adding capacity either.

We are talking about a carrier that would probably have 1-2 weekly flights at most on a charter basis, I suppose a lot would depend if someone has chartered the aircraft already......

Anyway, I was creating a talking point. All rhetoric aside, the carrier has added MAN and BHX to its route map, they must have some form of intent to do something, so, let's see how the situation develops, shall we?

This carrier certainly exists -The three A340s are ex Egyptair machines and would expect them to be looking to tap the Umrah/Hajj markets onto Jeddah via Cairo.

What can't see is them operating regular schedules to be honest.

Norwegian

Well a few of my contacts in Norwegian are now 99% certain that there will be a base announcement before the winter season starts. They are confident it will start in April 2016, a charter program will have in addition FAO/IBZ/PMI/ALC/SPU/NCE with 2 based aircraft.

Long Haul Growth Drives Busiest Ever June at Birmingham Airport

Almost one million passengers passed through Birmingham Airport last month, making it the busiest June in the airport’s history.
A record 988,916 people chose the Midlands airport throughout June, beating its previous record for the month, set in June 2014 by 2.8%
Long-haul traffic experienced significant growth in June, up 20% compared to the same period last year.
Paul Kehoe, Birmingham Airport’s chief executive, said: “Throughout 2015, we’ve seen passenger records smashed almost on a monthly basis and June was no different. It was particularly pleasing to see long-haul traffic increase by 20% too, compared to the same period last year; a clear sign that demand continues to grow in this market.
“We’re expecting our long-haul traffic to increase further in the coming months, following the recent launch of direct charter flights to Beijing, which will operate throughout the summer with Hainan Airlines. The route is proving to be incredibly popular with inbound and outbound passengers, offering plenty of encouragement for the future.”
June’s passenger numbers mean the Airport has now achieved five record-breaking months in 2015, as January, March, April and May also saw a record number pass through the terminal.
Scheduled traffic in June accounted for 77% of the total figure, with charter passengers making up the remaining 23%
One hundred percent growth and above was seen on scheduled routes to Keflavik, Perpignan, Amritsar, Madrid and New York JFK, as well as growth to La Rochelle (+81.7%), Delhi (+76.5%) and Athens (+62.9%).
Charter services to Munich (+206.7%), Alicante (+125.1%), Cancun (+100.2%) and Antwerp (+100%) also experienced significant growth.

With the established United down 8% and American flying with a third of their seats unsold, are we looking at a repeat of the last two times we had two daily westbound B757s on BHX-US? Robbing Peter to pay Paul isn't the best way forward IMHO.
