BIRMINGHAM'S FOURTH annual Caribbean festival will have a royal flavour this year as the landmark even has had the backing of West African-based Prince
One of Africa’s foremost investors, the prince has just had a whistle-stop tour of Britain’s second city where he also finalised plans with Birmingham International Airport for direct flights to the Gambia with Africaada Airways.
As the chairman of Royal Africa Holdings, Prince Ebrahim’s proposals will bring a much-needed jobs boost, while also opening up West Africa to the people of Birmingham as a potential new holiday destination.
Direct flights from Birmingham would operate three times a week with Gambia as the central hub connecting Ghana and Sierra Leone.
Speaking at the launch of the three-day Africaada Caribbean festival, which will be held between July 30 - August 1, the prince said the Gambia was planning to almost double the size of its tourism industry by 2017. He said a dozen new hotels had been built in the past 18 months to provide the bases for package holidays to West Africa.
He told The Voice: “I think Birmingham has more cultural commonalities with the Gambia than places like Spain or Greece. For a start, we speak the same English language and we have one of the lowest crime rates in Africa – in fact our crime rate is lower than the UK’s.”
The prince, whose dynasty dates back to Africa’s Kaabu and Mali Empire, was welcomed on his second visit to Birmingham by the city’s new Lord Mayor Councillor Ray Hassall. He first came in 2009 to promote his Invest in Gambia initiatives.
Prince Ebrahim told the launch that he was extremely proud to be forging links with the city because of its strong culture. He said the forthcoming festival would be an excellent platform to display that culture, while also expanding potential trade links between Africa, the Caribbean and the UK.

As always the scheduling is rubbish and it means an extra night in a hotel at the start of the trip (due to the late arrival into BUD) or at the end (due to the early departure from WAW). So a three day trip is really only 2 days there. The flight prices may be attractive but once an extra night's accommodation is factored in, the price differential with legacy carriers probably isn't going to be much.

Nice to see something different coming in, but the previous 747 operator proved it isn't the best aircraft to start a route with, unless they are expecting to carry lots of cargo.

It is the curse of every airport marketing department to have to spend a portion of its time entertaining timewasters - but I must say Birmingham does seem to be the airport of choice for a free lunch amongst airline wanabe's.
But saying that - occasionally, very occasionally, in this business you get a fat Greek bloke in jeans and t-shirt turn up with pots of money - and the rest becomes history.

BHX response to Davies Review
Paul Kehoe, CEO of Birmingham Airport, has today urged the Government to take a cautious response to the Airports Commission’s recommendations, as regional airports like Birmingham Airport continue to thrive.
The Airports Commission, led by Chairperson Sir Howard Davies, has spent the past three years looking into the future of UK aviation in order to make recommendations to the Government on the future of UK aviation, including the lack of capacity in the South-East.
Birmingham Airport has argued for a strategic network of long-haul airports throughout the UK, each supporting the comparative economic advantage of that region.
The Airports Commission has made an individual recommendation to Government for the Heathrow Northwest Runway scheme to be taken forward.
Birmingham Airport CEO Paul Kehoe said in reaction:
“Over the past three years the Airports Commission has explored numerous options for resolving the South-East congestion, and we are incredibly grateful to all those in the region who have supported our case for a network of airports.
“Given the significant levels of growth we have seen at Birmingham Airport within this period, especially in long-haul routes, we urge the Government to move ahead with caution so as not to damage the ability of regional airports to grow.
“The Midlands is a powerful engine of growth at the heart of our country and needs direct aviation to succeed. With our £200 million investment in the Airport, including our runway extension allowing for this summer’s extended series of direct flights to Beijing, we are doing all we can to support the region’s businesses and leisure passengers.
“Whilst the Government continues to review all the evidence before it, Birmingham Airport looks forward to continuing the expansion of our long-haul offering in support of the region’s economy”.
Paul Faulkner, CEO of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, has also responded to the decision by the Commission:
“Businesses tell us they want to be able to fly directly to their markets and not have to go through West London. We know the Government needs to deal with congestion in the South East, but we urge Ministers to move ahead in a way that does not restrict Birmingham’s own room to grow".
Over the course of the past three years, Birmingham Airport has presented the Airports Commission with evidence of the role that Government marketing, road and rail investment and changes to taxation can play in making best use of existing UK runway capacity.
The Airports Commission has been provided with evidence of how an Air Passenger Duty ‘holiday’ for new long-haul routes would bring over 90,000 new passengers to Birmingham Airport each year.
In addition, working with Capital Economics and Steer Davies Gleave, Birmingham Airport has demonstrated that, with HS2, it will be the airport with the largest one-hour catchment area in the country, with over 15 million people a short journey away and thus able to offer an alternative to passengers in London.

TAP sale agreed by Portuguese government
I spend a lot of time in Portugal and I am not sure to what extent this development has been covered in the UK but from RTP news reports it would appear that a sale figure has now been agreed.
I mention this because the new owners have pledged themselves to develop both the airline's short haul (Europe) and long haul route structure, particularly to South America.
With Brazil, in particular, destined to be a developing market over the next 10 years i would hope that BHX management are making all the right noises to TAP to establish a direct link to Lisbon. I know there are daily flight from MAN but i do not find that airport the easiest place to get to or like.
From a practical point of view Lisbon is the ideal hub to fly to for onward connection to either Rio, Brasilia or Sao Paulo -- ideal in the sense that the journey is up to two hours less than transiting in either Amsterdam, Paris or Frankfurt from a starting base in BHX.
I visit Brazil regularly and, particularly on the 0600 KLM flight from BHX to AMS i am often struck by the number of people making the same journey. Add to that Paris and Frankfurt, and there is maybe a solid base for TAP to 'tap' into.

I was surprised it didn't happen during their 2014 European expansion when the likes of Nante and Hanover were added and another smaller airport. Perhaps with Manchester and Heathrow with so many frequencies perhaps erring on the side of caution but hopefully BHX's time will come.

The extra freight flights are due to the problems with the Channel Tunnel and ferries at Calais, car parts stuck on lorries and the GA might have something to do with a motor race just down the road this weekend. Things like silver lining etc. come to mind!

New Chinese Flights - Press Release
The Secretary of State for Transport Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin MP has welcomed the first passengers on a flight from China in the first of an extended series of flights, which, if developed into a daily service, could deliver an additional £81 million to the UK economy each year, including £62 million per year for the West Midlands.
The Boeing 767-300 aircraft, operated by Hainan Airlines, arrived this morning with 233 passengers visiting the UK on organised package tours. This is the first in a series of flights that will see more than 4,000 Chinese visitors to the region over the summer months through packages offered by Caissa Touristic, one of China’s largest tour operators.

“Last year’s test of direct Beijing flights were the result of collaborative working with Birmingham City Council, Marketing Birmingham, VisitBritain and the Government. I am delighted that we have been able to push on from last year’s success to offer a series of 34 flights this summer.
“The Midlands is a powerful engine of growth at the heart of our country and needs direct aviation to succeed. As the only region to have a positive balance of trade with China, we know how much the Midlands tourism and manufacturing industries value this direct connection.
“All involved in the deal intend that these Hainan flights will build over the coming years, before becoming the first scheduled service between a non-London UK airport and mainland China.”
A daily scheduled route would offer significant potential economic benefits to the West Midlands. In a forthcoming report being undertaken by York Aviation, the transport analysts say that “such a flight could support additional Gross Value Added in the region of around £62 million a year and around 1350 jobs”.
In addition, York Aviation say that the time savings for passengers in the West Midlands, able to fly from Birmingham to China rather than via Heathrow, would be worth £5 million a year to the economy.
Businesses across the region have been quick to welcome this development.

“At present, BSA use carriers to fly from Birmingham Airport to European hubs or to Dubai to connect with long-haul flights, as this is easier than travelling to Heathrow. When BSA visits customers in Taiwan, we do fly from Heathrow via Hong Kong but this incurs the added inconvenience of travelling to and from London: fighting through traffic congestion and incurring parking expense and hotel fees.
“These difficulties also affect our overseas customers visiting our plant here in Birmingham. It would be of tremendous benefit and put Birmingham on the international map if Birmingham Airport could cater for long-haul point-to-point services.”

“At present, BSA use carriers to fly from Birmingham Airport to European hubs or to Dubai to connect with long-haul flights, as this is easier than travelling to Heathrow. When BSA visits customers in Taiwan, we do fly from Heathrow via Hong Kong but this incurs the added inconvenience of travelling to and from London: fighting through traffic congestion and incurring parking expense and hotel fees.
“These difficulties also affect our overseas customers visiting our plant here in Birmingham. It would be of tremendous benefit and put Birmingham on the international map if Birmingham Airport could cater for long-haul point-to-point services.”

Great to see the transport secretary meet this flight and make a positive statement about BHX future aspirations to launch scheduled flights to China.
The first flight with 233 on board was a 100% load factor !
Looking good for another successful and greatly expanded charter programme from Beijing this summer. Also great to see these flights showing on Hainans own website.
Quite a day for interesting flights we also had a Silk Air IL-76 and another AN-12 in today to add to the AN-74, AN-12s and AN-26s of yesterday.

AA Tech
Flew in last night and saw the AA 757 parked on a remote stand. Presumably it went tech.
When the UA goes tech it is easy enough to rebook pax through FRA or MUC but with no other alliance members at BHX, AA must have a costly re-routing problem if their aircraft goes tech.

Apparently the outbound AAL131 on Sunday was cancelled due to lack of crew and nothing to do with tech or any other issues.
The inbound today was cancelled but the outbound operated as normal.
Still not a good situation as far as reliability is concerned!!
