How very true, when you walk round Manchester it very clear that
there is a very big market for Chinese or should I say asian tourism TO
Manchester as the city is full of young chinese with cameras and shopping bags looking at the sites.

Bagso, yes, I'd seen the link to the BHX report and can only agree with your comments. I'm sure there is great potential for HK/China originating business for MAN which hopefully CX will capture.
The only aspect I didn't see mentioned in the CAPA report was the potential for attracting new passengers to the MAN-HK service who previously used other UK airports for departure or entry to the UK. Simply splitting up the existing market
mainly at the expense of EK, and SQ (for Australia) in particular is surely not what is intended.

The CAPA article quotes a virtual tour so by comparison !
Selfridges and Harvey Nichols (luxury shopping). Indeed both opened their first stores outside London in ......now where was it, damn cant remember !
Manchester has one of the largest high end retail market outside London and one of the largest amount of sq footage in Europe...
Actually talking of luxury goods I am sure they have TWO Selfridges, but maybe I am getting mixed up ?
Lake District , glorious and last time I checked only an hour from Man Airport, oh and don't they also have the Peak District including Chatsworth House on the doorstep, some say it's the best stately home in England
And what of English history Chester is a must, it certainly compares to Edinburgh, and knocks the spots off York or how about a trip to Liverpool where The Beatles tour is STILL one of the most popular tourist hotspots in the UK and a magnet for Asian tourists. Damn you Manchester Airport, forgot you were less than an hour away again !
Shall I mention the option to actually play three "Open Golf courses" all within 45mins ...oops best not.
Oh and for the pilgrims from Asia whose sporting preference is Football we have MUFC, who despite struggling somewhat have just signed a new shirt deal, only £600m with majority of sales being in ....wait for it Asia.
3 charters ? Good grief you could fill a flight a week to the shrine that is Old Trafford on its own !
At least with excellent connections through Hong Kong and a possible non stop service from Beijing in the offing, Chinese tourists will be offered total flexibility when it comes to visiting Manchester and the rich heritage of the North Of England AND at a time of their choosing 52 weeks a year !

No, he's pretty spot on with the travel times from MAN. It sits right on the motorway network and MAN is centrally located. 40 mins Chester, 45 mins Liverpool, the edge of the Peak District can be reached in 20 mins!!! And the edge of the Lake District in an hour. York within 90 minutes. You could go on.

Bagso I think we may have got our lines crossed but as I said before Manchester is awash with chinese tourists with a lot of money to spend
and a lot to see so there is a big inbound market and i`m sure if we get a mainland China service it will be a success for both directions and a market that is clearly growing

Ian - can this be quantified or is there a link to a data source. 'Awash' is such a vague and non-specific term to an aviation or airport analyst that it would be helpful to get some hard data to support it.
The other thing to remember in this debate is that the whole concept of acceptable overland travel times is completely different depending on your cultural background and what is normal in day to day life. The average US, Indian or Chinese citizen for example would find 2 hours on the train from London as 'round the corner' by their own standards and on that basis London, with it's obvious draws, becomes a very well placed base to explore the rest of the UK. Many travel itineraries from the US and the Far East also tend to be European focussed. A tour of European capitals with an extended stay in London is quite common.

No but the chinese are the top spending country claiming tax back off shopping at about £600+ per head in Manchester and the awash bit is from the a few visits recently and a very high number of chinese around and about
I agree about Americans as you see very few up here as they do London, Paris, Rome etc with about 2 days at each. I was having a chat with some at CDG last year waiting for our flight back to Manchester (they were going to London) and their flight was delayed about 6hrs so had totally screwed the visit to London as they were doing the many of the art galleries in 2 days

Just checked airfares using Cathay from Manchester to Manila in Business, £11,452!!!!!! Who are they trying to kid?

CX to Sydney
In Feb'2015, MAN-SYD business class return on CX web site is £8,322 would you believe.
LHR - SYD for the same dates is £3,913. Even F class is only £6,621.
Economy and PE fares are just £8 cheaper from LHR.
Are bookings already that good in Business for February next year from MAN or is someone playing silly games?

I got a return booked in December asap for around £3K and was told at the time December was already looking very full.
Perhaps you've just left it too late for your particular dates?

I have just checked February return to Sydney in Business and it was £4600 from Manchester and £3813 from London, bearing in mind there are 5 flights a day to fill from Heathrow the difference is not totally surprising.
As a regular traveller to the Far east it was always the case CX were more expensive than the MEB3, anecdotally usually over £3000 return to HKG in Business when EK was usually at half of that so again the prices quoted by others don't surprise me.
Some will pay the premium for a direct flight some wont, depends who is paying.

I didn't actually say the whole month, and referred to LHR fares for the "same dates". Still, if you think I wasn't specific enough, I can only apologise.
The point is there are extremely high fares for some dates. Is this an indication that Business Class has already sold well for those days, given the prices are so astronomical?

I apologise also as I may have misunderstood, the Sunday flights are always more expensive and CX have historically been more expensive than the MEB3. It may be they have already sold well, or the prices may adjust over time.
