Outlook is bleak.

Can the airport survive much longer?

How many more routes would have to be cut until is enough is enough?

As a casual visitor to the DSA thread, I always enjoy reading Timmy's prophesies of doom. They are so frequent and cynical that one can only express amusement from afar.
Although he has a point about the shortage of traffic, DSA is in a better position than some of the third-level airports in Britain (Coventry, Plymouth, Manston, Teesside, even Blackpool and Humberside, are handling fewer pax).
So keep us smiling Timmy!

LGS - Plymouth or Coventry are not good comparable examples of airports if you want to present Timmy as unduly pessimistic... !

Fair comment; perhaps I should have chosen Lydd and Newquay.

Could also add Bournemouth, Derry and Inverness to the list of UK airports seeing fewer passengers than Doncaster in 2013

Apparently Thomson won't be renewing their contract at DSA when it ends in 2015.

TimmyW - could you tell us your reason for believing this to be the case ? It would be really helpful if you could provide some sort of publicly accessible source of information

Other forums.
They are steadily reducing their frequencies for next summer (compare original schedules to current ones)

Plus they had a 10 year contract, 2015 is the final year.

Ryanair will no longer be operating from DSA, Thomson reducing, Wizz stagnant.

Can someone tell me where new routes will come from? Or will Peel ultimately run DSA in the ground like they are doing further north?

Could it be that Thomsons and other operators are not happy with the way Peel are running their airports?

Thomsons were after all kicked out of Teesside by peel recently. Maybe Thomson are now looking for an airport owner who doesn't treat them so badly.

DSA appears to be following the poor relative Teesside. Its very quiet up there due to Peels master plan.

Drove by DSA today, housing estates going up all over the place in the immediate vicinity to the airport.

A lot of the "Robin Hood Airport" logo signs that were on the approach road have been removed as well.

Thomson have reduced its Palma fights from the initial 6 offered when the schedule was announced down to 4 in the last few days, so further reductions on top of the several already for this summer.
Forgive my negativity but can anyone put a positive spin on the situation?!

What a load of bollocks.

Palma still has the 6 flights, all bookable. Care to provide evidence of the reduction? No, thought not.

Actually, it looks like Timmy may be almost correct for once!. Checking in June on the Thomson website, the Tuesday 6:25am departure in the brochure does not "appear" to be bookable when searching. In August, there is an additional Wednesday departure, so looks like Palma might be 4x weekly May-Oct, with an additional Wednesday departure during the school holidays.

It does though?

Even if the flight is not available on flight only, it is certainly available on package holidays. It may just be all the 'flight only' seats have been sold on these dates.

Also, the Wednesday evening flight runs 9 July - 10 Sept so more capacity than just school holidays.

The 6 flights to PMI from DSA in peak season run as follows:
Mon: 19:30
Tue: 06:25
Wed: 19:30
Thur: 06:00
Sat: 07:15 & 22:15.

I was searching on flight only, where the flight does not show. Good to see the flights appear to be operating after all.

New job at DSA

This new job with Peel has a good description which could apply to DTV with the stand alone part.
Not a bad wage to wander around, but they would ideally like a degree holder.

DSA stating on their Facebook page that they are on the verge of securing new services and the first of these will be announced in the very near future.

Wonder who it could be. My guess would be a new route from Wizz.

Five diversions tonight from Luton. Wizz from Warsaw, Burgas (Sp?), Brno, Bucharest and Easyjet from Nice. Must be very windy there as it's quite fresh here.

Timmy - hope you're right, we could do with some good news!

Timmy - would you be kind enough to post the entry on DSA's Facebook page about a possible new route ? I've had a look on the public FB page, but just can't see the entry. And no, I don't intend to start making friends with DSA just to see a press release...

It isn't a press release it is a reply to someone's post. Here it is, whether there is an announcement at any time is another question.

Hi Emma, our 2014 Summer Flight Schedule will not include Ryanair services to Girona or Tenerife. Ryanair will see a reduction in the number of aircraft they operate in 2014 and a number of UK regional airports will see capacity reductions as a result. Ryanair have also committed to growth at London Stansted and in Ireland, the later as a result of the Irish Tourism Tax. Ryanair have also announced new bases overseas in Brussels and Rome.

Tenerife South will continue to be operated by Thomson / First Choice in 2014 alongside a range of other holiday destinations including Majorca, Turkey, Egypt, Cyprus, Poland and more. Our Aviation Development team is in discussions with Ryanair regarding new opportunities for when growth in the UK market returns. We are also working with a range of new operators to increase the number of destinations on offer and we expect to see the first of those services to be announced in the very near future.
