Thomson have done that in other places as well so it isn't just DSA being targeted. And I guess the AN225 and the 747's buzzing in and out just lately (more today!) make quite a healthy profit for the airport ....

I'm not saying they haven't done it elsewhere - just saying it is a shame that the passenger growth is going to take a backwards step again next year.

I think this also strengthens the argument that DSA cannot sustain business/city break routes. Amsterdam, Dublin, Belfast, Prague etc have been tried several times before by several operators and have all been pulled within months.

I believe as far as passenger numbers and services are concerned, it will never increase much beyond what it currently offers, and being solely dependant on Thomson and Wizz surely is a precarious position with the formers contract ending next year.

Future of DSA

I've just been looking at the passenger statistics for DSA this year and so far and to my bewilderment 700 MP have been handled so far. This implies that DSA has done better than in 2012 and 2013 (693 million for 2013 I believe)

This made me think hard about the future development and growth for the airport. As we all know it has great facilities for future airlines much better than LBIA for example (parallel taxiway, superior runway length/arrangement etc)

With the HS2 rail coming into place in the 2020/2030's Doncaster will be in a 1hr and 10 minute attaining distance from London. Transiting from Doncaster train station to DSA can be reached in less than 30 minutes via the Doncaster bus interchange, taxi and car. This did really make me think.

The terminal can currently handle 2.5 million pax so what does this imply? Good facilities, good transport links and overall it’s in a good location.
With London’s airports almost being over capacitated and a significant demand for a new super hub airport can’t DSA be that airport? Thinking about it logically, it will be in easy reaching distance from the south. Domestic/connecting flights can be enforced and it will save billions of tax payers money in developing a brand new airport for example in the Thames Estuary. It will be less distance than flying or commuting via rail to Manchester and also with Sheffield, Leeds and Wakefield being commercialised trading cities, there could be business passenger demand for Scheduled flights from the north as well as the south.

It’s perhaps me over thinking this but do you guys think there’s some potential here?

In your scenario why not just use MAN for the northern super hub?

Yes Manchester has the terminal capacity to handle way more than it currently does but what about its current struggling and limited aircraft movements per hour? You'd just be back to square 1 with airlines refusing to pay silly money for slots like at LHR for example. I truly believe that slot issues at LHR with BA are the reason BA have started a route at LBA. Pretty much not a profitable route but more or less to get the aircraft out of LHR avoiding paying slot periods (£X,000,000's) which probably costs more than flying the aircraft to LBA and back at stupid/illogical times with a low load factor/pax on board. Now that wouldn't suprise me if anything but... that's good and clever business method for you. I'm sorry but if I wanted to go to London from Leeds i'd take the East Coast rail service which runs every 20 minutes to Kings Cross and I think anybody else would. Sorry to go off topic but that route they're running just really makes me wonder.

In what way has MAN got a
current struggling and limited aircraft movements per hour
?

Approx 57 movements per hour is the current maximum with ultimate capacity being something like 70 to 75 per hour. This morning, there's approx 105 movements from 0600 through to 0859 scheduled. Throw in an extra 20 movements to allow for increased summer schedules and it's 125. 36 movements 0700-0759 today so even allowing for all the 20 extra summer movements to happen in that hour (extremely unlikely) still leaves room for 1 more movement.

Nothing will change!

Matching airport against airport is futile. HST will probably improve the prospects of EVERY airport that can possibly benefit from the link. All this talk of a superhub is just that. For very many reasons I can't ever see that becoming a reality. It isn't just airport capacity that you have to take into account, it is road transport capacity, etc. etc. Neither can I see the current status quo changing in the foreseeable future either. DSA will probably continue to slowly grow because the link road (which TUI have been looking over recently) makes the airport more accessible to anyone within easy reach of the M1, but if you look at what the three airports have got ...MAN = size (size matters) LBA has possession of routes and pax (possession=9/10ths of the law!) and then there is DSA which has seen a slow rise in pax recently and a sudden rise in cargo flights ... and Timmy W as a supporter! Oh well! Can't win 'em all ...

Seems Timmy W was a little economical with the truth when telling everyone of the "email" he received regarding linksair stopping flights from DSA, this from their twitter feed

LinksAir ‏@LinksAir Dec 11
@dwest198000 yes we will have flights from DSA next year with our two existing routes & looking at what may work for the future @DSA_Airport

@SamCEllis yes we are still operating DSA to Belfast & will continue to do so. Flights break during January due low demand & return February

Yet when you try to book DSA -BHD in February and onwards their site shows either SOLD OUT or No AVAILABLE SEATS. I haven't seen one day when I can book!
Either they are doing fantastically well or something odd is happening.

Thomson have extended their contract for the long term at DSA. No exact figures on the number of years.
Good positive news, and hopefully will see an increase in routes from 2016.

Links Air

Hopefully Links Air will return to the airport and that this is not just a prelude to them withdrawing completely:

Links Air to temporarily suspend Isle of Man, Belfast flights - ch-aviation.com

The reason makes sense at least, they are down to just 2 functioning aircraft (G-JIBO and G-LNKS) so if one needs a C-Check then the money from the WAG for the Anglesey to Cardiff route pretty much decides which one gets the chop.

I don't quite see how Links Air will suspend Jan / Feb flights to the IOM bearing in mind that they have none scheduled anyway...

Interesting. Perhaps they have researched that Slovakian migrants are from the east of that country, or perhaps they feel Bratislava is already over served.

Kosice is underserved with only Vienna, Bratislava and Prague flights by other operators. Besides KSC might attract hungarians (and even ukrainians ?) living in the neighbouring area as well.

The airport have submitted plans to Doncaster council to extend the terminal building. Very surprising as a lot of the terminal is mothballed because it isn't currently in use, wonder why they are needing the extra space........?
