This week's plan ...
Morning all!
Yes, it's another world beater ... Minister announces plan to appoint two new directors to EI, with the instructions to prevent any further transfer of EI slots at LHR from ORK or DUB ... but it's too late to prevent any changes to protect SNN, which as you can appreciate, is not going down terribly well at SNN.

The govt's determination not to interfere in the commercial decisions of EI seems to have faded just a tad; there are lots of questions that might be asked here:
(a) even if they had directors on the board, that would only be three; what good would that do? They could be outvoted, if it came down to a vote.
(b) why didn't the govt appoint all the directors it was entitled to appoint?
(c) it's votes at an EGM that really count, so if it really wanted to save SNN slots, why not agree to this; if it doesn't do it for SNN, how can there be any comfort that it would do so for ORK? Or even DUB?
(d) instead of what seems to be just a cosmetic change, why not state clearly what their intentions are and actually spend some time putting together a logical, well thought out and farsighted aviation policy, something we've never had.
(e) do they really think anyone will be fooled by this?

This is really adding fuel to the fire regards emotions in the mid west. FF wont get a single vote in the next election in the mid west if this sort of politics continues. The slots at SNN were always the most vulnerable and needed to be protected and instead the DUB/ORK slots are now being protected 'just in case' they are at risk. What a joke, I cant believe this nonsense. On the one hand they say EI are a private company and can make any decision they like but now they step in to protect other slots.

EI A330's
Have EI installed all the new Premier seats on all the A330's. Due to fly to Toronto via East Coast and my preference is via Dulles to visit the Air and Space Museum enroute.

With this afternoon's missive by Mr. Mannion to pilots it looks as if this may be the final showdown. It looks very serious because whoever loses this one relinquishes control of the airline's destiny and it is hard to see either backing down. I hope it's not another case where a company dies for the sake of union egos.

Can anyone tell me why Aer Lingus think its acceptable to air its dirty laundry so openly on its Website by clearly publishing its letters to Aer Lingus staff over both the pilots dispute and the pay freeze????
It seems to me that a professional airline would not be so obvious over its internal disputes when it comes to a public website, thats what the newspapers are for!
I really do wonder about the new Aer Lingus management.

Aer Lingus looking ahead despite BFS issue.
Aer Lingus hints that their second international base may be in the US.
Aer Lingus commercial director, Enda Corneille has said that the reason they are putting so much energy into Belfast is because Belfast will become a template for all the other bases.
He also said one of the drivers of the next base will be aircraft deliveries and he mentioned that they have 2 A330s coming in 2009. He is obviously just saying what could happen in the next few years as the fleet grows and the business expands.

I expect that Enda Corneille also mentioned the A320 deliveries for base expansion but putting down the A330 for a US base is much more interesting reading for the Irish Independent's readers. There are only two A330s arriving in 2009 and one of them will replace an aircraft.
There's always the chance that once BFS is up and runing they might send an A330 up there to start long-haul. If they look at BHX again I can see them considering long-haul with some of the new A330s/A350s.

I can forsee the airline going tits-up with the current impasse never mind where the new 330s are going. I hope Dermot Mannion backs down over this BFS thing or Aer Lingus's future will be on edge...

Talks are continuing at the Labour Relations Commission to try to break the deadlock at Aer Lingus in the dispute over its proposed new Belfast hub.
However, it seems likely that Tuesday's threatened stoppage will go ahead after it emerged that management has already hired ten new captains for its planned base in Belfast.
Union sources said they had been unaware of this development throughout the settlement negotiations, which commenced at lunchtime on Saturday.

Meanwhile, American pilots have pledged up to $1m in support of their Irish colleagues in the event of a lockout.

The deal was reached after more than 20 hours of continuous negotiations at the Labour Relations Commission.
Both sets of negotiators will recommend the deal, which is subject to a ballot by the pilots. It is understood that agreement has been reached on the key issues of pensions, seniority and criteria for promotions.
He said agreement meant that Aer Lingus now had the ability to open the Belfast base and other bases on local terms and conditions

The government will appoint more directors as is their right, so that they're better represented on the board of the directors. They should have had it so from day one, but alas...
