Start and end the TA A330s flights at MAN (via DUB) then put all European flights via MAN. similar to the old 5th freedom operation they had.

There is no Ryanair competition here and some European destination are crying out for flights.

Just a thought
No prizes for guessing what your local airport is.

Anyway I guess your suggestion was more tongue in cheek rather than a serious remark.

I would like to see them return to NCL now that RYR have dropped frequencies on Dublin and abandoned SNN but with smaller aircraft.

EI@BHX

Just noticed that BHX - DUB to four daily most days from Sunday
29/3/2010. All aircraft shown as 320's.

This is the first time in ages that EI have had four daily Dublin
services. In winter is was regular until this one but this seems
a surprise unless of course the aircraft will change to ATR72!

Another odd one if somebody could explain is the difference
in departure fees from Dublin.

BHX/LGW/EDI in April is £35.30 taxes and charges and MAN/GLA
£27.93.

BHX & MAN have a flying time of one hour and this is the Dublin
end of the tax not the UK end. Do EI have different agreements
for charges on departures?

Someone mentioned the big Irish community in London. That much is true, but they are concentrated north of the Thames, so more evidence of questionable decision-making there...

Perhaps LTN or STN would have been better

the Cork route is strategically important
I dont see that Cork/Gatwick is strategivcally important. And any suggestion on here that Aer Lingus doing Cork/Gatwick in the context of having some sort of tie up with Aer Arann makes no sense. Aer Lingus serve London very well from Cork and they can offer the connections via LHR (or with RE in future via Dublin)

Cork/Gatwick with Aer Lingus will be mainly point to point traffic as BA is scaling back and all interline traffic can use LHR, and Aer Lingus are going head to head with Ryanair. Absolutely crazy, doing this route is no different than that the situation on the Dublin routes. Ryanair will end up basing another aircraft in Cork to allow for another daily rotation and then they may end up opening up other routes ex Cork. I forsee that Ryanair will increase schedule on Gatwick/Cork and will not offer Aer Lingus this on a plate, It will be like Easyjet on this route all over again and I wouldnt be surprised if Ryanair decide to target Aer Lingus' remaining routes ie Knock, Malaga to Gatwick.

Or will Ryanair decide to 'rescue Aer Lingus passengers' by launching a base at LGW and offering all of the closed routes to illustrate how they can do them so effectively?

It is easy to debate how wrong the lgw lauch was but at the outset it seemed like a strong proposition, if a big market like a London airport wont work for Aer Lingus I cant see how any other base would work, despite how much I like Aer Lingus I see this as a big admission of the company's unsuitability for any bases outside of the Island of Ireland.

It is very difficult for a former legacy carrier to grow organically. They are at a significant disadvantage carrying the financial burden of being a former legacy carrier. EI has been static for years. How can the airline have an independent future if it cannot grow organically. There was a great opportunity to move the airline forward when WW was in charge but the Government got in the way. This is a complete disaster.

Is it not a bit odd to cut these routes at the end of March, just as the summer season is about to start? Working on the basis that they might have made some money over the summer, would it not have been possible to run these to the end of the summer season? If the routes are that bad, they should have cut them right away, not wait to end of March.

I think this is very sad for Ei and travellers generally. I have used Ei a lot out of Bfs and they were very good, they deserve better.

Maybe not put all their euro flights thro MAN, but we do have some vacancies, like MAD, VIE & TXL where there used to be multiple daily flights & now none. So no competition & could be operated by one based aircraft rather than a DUB stopper.

Could we have an evening LGW-SNN-LGW rotation please to replace the lost Ryanair service?! Many of us Irish contingent do live south of the Thames and are left with a useless morning rotation by FR in the new "we hate Shannon" 2010 timetable. STN is too far and LHR is ok but LGW is preferable. I've even heard from a FR source that they would have preferred to keep the evening rotation to SNN (better numbers and yields) but just can't do it with the reduced SNN base.

Hi all,

Just to re-iterate my point, pulling out of LGW demonstrates that EI cannot sustain a base outside of Ireland. This has massive implications for the future of Aer Lingus. If they weren't able to sustain the base in LGW, they have no hope of sustaining one in Europe. EI now have a massive problem on their hands, the only way they can reliably grow is by growing their Irish bases. I respect Aer Lingus management for trying the Gatwick base as quite simply, they have no decent alternative growth path. At least they've shown they're willing to cut a base when it isn't giving a return.

Aer Lingus management now have serious strategic questions to deal: -

1. How do they maintain and hopefully grow their passenger numbers and yield? Ryanair, Easy Jet etc. have done this through opening bases and Aer Lingus attempted this also. The LGW experiment hasn't worked so we now must rule out the the UK as a base of operations and they don't have a chance in Europe due to lack of brand recognition etc.. If it didn't work at LGW, I don't see how it could work elsewhere in the UK as FR will simply establish a base with the sole purpose of running Aer Lingus out.

2. What are they going to do to deliver a return to shareholders to keep them interested? We all know about the ESOT, DoT and Ryanair shareholdings but there's another ~30% of the company held in private hands and Hr. Mueller and his team need to keep these people as shareholders. If they don't Ryanair will buy up the shares and it's game over for EI.

All the best,

P2C.

EI from LGW

"Just to re-iterate my point, pulling out of LGW demonstrates that EI cannot sustain a base outside of Ireland....."

As pointed out previously by other contributor - never understood setting up at LGW with competion from Eurostar from London as well as other LLCs instead of MAN with its large irish community. I think a targetted selection of routes from MAN (i.e. MAD, KRW, etc) would have worked ... but probably now will never know.

who was the genius in the first place that decided to camp in Easys playground......Easy was never going to take this one lying down. Ever since the deputy ceo departed it's all been entrenchment.......the sting of a dying wasp or going back to basics as a niche airline. either way there'll be tears.

Perhaps it was just that LGW was far too competitive for them. EI offer a decent product but when you are up against the likes of Easyjet and Ryanair you will always be perceived to be more expensive even if you're not.

Perhaps they should have gone to an airport in mainland Britain which is not well served with flights to Ireland or has huge gaps in its destination network on the continent such as MAN, CWL or NCL.

Agreed! London Gatwick was probably the worst choice of airport in the UK for a short haul base.

London Gatwick would have been perfect for a long haul base. For short haul, Glasgow or Manchester would have been better options IMO.

Report in today Irish Independent saying Goodbody stockbrockers now adjusting their Aer Lingus predictions for 2010.

Now forecasting a net increase in cash from an estimated 274 million at end of '09 to 304 million by end of 2010.
They have also revised their second half prediction of an 8 million loss to an operating profit of 7 million.

The two aircraft from LGW are believed to be redeployed rather than grounded.

MAN , as especially Ryanair threw their toys out the pram & left & EZY is only just scratching the surface at MAN not wishing to upset their LPL product.

LGW cuts

About which routes Aer Lingus will cut from LGW, checking April 2010 prices, I tried VNO, WAW and ZRH, all those give me 300-340 GBP for a return, which I guess is the known system of making flights very expensive that no-one books them, and then cancel the route. I guess Air Baltic will step in for VNO (re-starting the route) sometime soon.

As has been suggested in the LGW thread perhaps a rebrand is in order. If EI management see opportunities in Europe what are the chances of them establishing a low cost subsidiary under a different name ?? Something like Qantas have done with Jetstar in Australia but on a smaller scale.
Aerjet anyone ? EI cannot grow outside of Ireland it now has to look at other alternatives.
