With the weather as bad as it has been in the Southwest, its probably just easier to cancel flights.

Both Severn bridges were closed at one point today, for the first time ever. News reports that ice was falling off the bridge onto cars. 6 hr tail backs on the M4
Motorways have been in a mess all day, so assume A/B roads are even worse.
Good enough reason to not cart pax across the bridge!
CO havent, and probably never will come to CWL. They normally go to MAN where they already have handling infrastructure in place.
Other airlines are more likely to divert to where they can recover their flying program as soon as possible. E.G TOM more like to go to BHX/LTN/LGW as they got crew availability to reposition the aircraft, whereas CWL will have minimum crew availability.

Noted pax taking the green run out of arrivals, the more hardened tried the black run chute adjacent to taxi-hub, who needs to go to France for ski-ing fun.
But wait, the high-powered snow blasting team arrive...armed with a green bucket on top of an old golf caddy..one pull of the lever, and hey presto, grit dispersal even the highway agency would be jealous of...
Oh,its broke...operatives spreading grit by hand!!!!!!
I still don't understand the point to the above post?
What is the Green/Black route?

Having worked over the past few days, i personally think CWL has done an excellent job in staying operational. Delays were of course going to happen, even though the weather wasn't as bad as it was elsewhere, few major delays have been encountered.
All ground staff worked their butt's off in rough weather.
Terminal staff kept the terminal as safe, and even with grit everywhere - as clean as possible!
The Airport Authority were quick to repsond to the whole situation and provide support.
The snow clearing teams have worked hard, almost non stop.
And tower have kept everyone as informed as possible with diversions.

Agree with the above, CWL did a good job to remain open today...........the reason why we had no diversions other than the EZY6626 ex CDG and EZY408 ex GLA on Thursday night was because BRS simply cancelled all arrivals. The CO went to MAN, apart from that no other arrivals.

The 2 WOW's operated directly to NQY & PLH respecitvely from LBA & MAN.

Good to see the new ABZ route has been announced..............lets hope it is the first of more to come !!!!

In regards to the ABZ route i believe its Loganair operating the route with a Saab.

Will it go for tender or will aviance handle them as they currently handle Flybe?

Gritting/snow

Caaardiff, it was a general observation of the past 5 days...
The guys worked hard in all weathers re.snow clearance.
Its just a pity they had no real hand/motorised vessel/vehicle to help them in their duties...
Like collecting baggage trollies too, both motorised trolley pushers are u/s under the sign at arrivals. It not much fun pushing 10-20 trollies uphill back to arrivals without mechanical help, its all uphill and heavy/manual work!
Excellent work through all weathers, give them the tools to help them.

Last week...

Agreeing with TagTop re the lack of equipment for the guys trying to clear up the snow and keep all the entrances clear. Throwing salt from a bucket/trolley with bare hands is not good. The guys manually pushing trolleys through the snow etc is a poor reflection of the place but it shows the determination and good will of the people having to do it - like many of us - we were there on days off and working extra hours - I know it's our job, but it was a superb effort by everyone which should attract a hint of thanks from ''upstairs''.

The sooner the front of terminal gets its upgrade the better with provision of covered walkways and level access.

As a result of these comments re the staff, will the staff vending area ever get smartened up with maybe a chair or two with a door to service yard and some vendors that actually work ie vend / give change ??? No sarnies last weekend Mon Tues or Wed . It amazes me how we still work in the past with rubbish facilities and rubbish equipment at the front of house/outside services.

As ever, I am a pesimist and wait to get shot down in flames !!!

No chartering for Aer Lingus, all flights are operated on a scheduled basis and on sale on their website. Couple of A320/1 and A330 flights.
Monarch operating a number of flights for the Italian game.
Not much for the French, just Aer Arann i believe.

Anyone spotted on CWLFLY.COM arrivals/departures page, the Thomson Airways advert on the right, the logo at the bottom of the advert.

New road?

Quote...
Road access to the airport is poor at the current time with only minor roads running near it after junction 33 of the M4 motorway. Improvement of the road access has been met with opposition and a public enquiry in 2006 but this is no longer a problem as the forthcoming Defence Training Academy at RAF Saint Athan, which is to get a direct link to the M4 motorway is near the airport and the link road will serve both.

Talking about roads is strictly forbidden ! Planes only. But if it wasn't the First Minister promised the MOD the access road to get the investment at St Athan. As soon as he had it the road was quietly dropped again and will not be built any time in the next ten years according to assembly transport priorities document published in the Western Mail a few months back. No new M4 relief road either.

Having said that access to BRS is just as bad !

Mmmmm. Back to planes before we all get told off again !

Topics on Pprunes...

I personally cannot see a problem regarding non plane issues at CWL here on this site as there really aren't too many aircraft or pax using the place at present, (unfortunately), to discuss ?

Let's get some traffic on this site as well or we'll all die of boredom ?? Page 78 dragged on for nearly 3 weeks !!

Lack of News

As most news deals with cuts in the present climate, perhaps the lack of news is not entirly a bad thing.

On another not strictly plane topic, but just to keep it interesting. Heard a runour the front of the terminal was getting a make over soon. Any truth in that. Are they just waiting for the busier summer period to create more disruption or has it been shelved due to lack of interest.

And an additional point can the airport not afford any tarmac to reopen taxyway B !!!!!

Yes there will be a 'make over' of the terminal, work starts October 09 and scheduled to finish May 2010. The work will involve connecting arrivals with departures, including some new shops and a cafe. This will be done by extending the front on the building out with a nice new glass front. The second floor will all become airside/departures (hence the reason for the new shops and cafe).

As for Taxiway Bravo, there are extensive cracks that mean it will all have to be replaced and started from scratch. NOT a simple or quick job but for now it is fun watching just how quickly an aircraft can stop when landing on 30
